This song was a lifesaver for me back in high school (class of65). Hearing these guys tell me, an uptight little bookish nerd from Staten Island, that it was “all right” to “have a good time” - instead of constantly worrying about my looks, my clothes, my chances of getting into a good graduate school for my Ph.D. in English, what my parents thought, etc., etc. - was like getting out of jail. I never did get that Ph.D … but by God I had myself a good time. No regrets. Thanks, Curtis & co.!
Lol..I've been on THE Staten Island Ferry and all over this WHOLE dam WORLD.NOT impressed.....well, on the other hand..along came The IMPRESSIONS.......and It's been alright.
I had the pleasure of meeting with Mr. Mayfield when I was 16 years of age in New York at a friend of my sisters party. Miss you Mr. Mayfield. You have got soul and everybody knows, its allright.
@@birdt4502 Right On! In fact, in the UK The most popular Audition Song on The X Factor is "Who's Loving You". In North America his Songs have reached Madison Avenue to sell Cell Phones, Walmart, Certs Breath Mints, Burlington Coat Factory, Sunmaid Raisins.
This song reminds my of my brother who was killed in Vietnam in 1968, I was 8 so I don’t have a lot memories just the music. He was so into soul music Bobby Moore and the Rhythm Aces, James and Bobby purify, Fontella Bass.
So great in so many ways. Curtis Mayfield was an influence on Hendrix's "pretty" playing. He talks about that and you can hear it. Curtis's soul and heart just keep giving...through the years....
This was a great group. They were known for their great vocal abilty. When other groups had elaborate routines this group would just stand up and sang!
God i wonder what these fellas think about the current state of black music? there are a few glimmers of hope, Bruno Mars, Pharrell Williams, but most of the hip hop is absolutely atrocious...
On this day in 1963 {November 9th} the Impressions' "It's All Right" reached #1 {for 2 weeks} on Billboard's Hot R&B Singles chart Two months earlier on September 28th it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #4 and spent 14 weeks on the Top 100 It was composed by the trio's leader, Curtis Mayfield During his 1993 European tour Bruce Springsteens covered the song eight times Was featured in the 1994 movie "Angels in the Outfield" R.I.P. Mr. Mayfield {1942-1999}
I was a teenager when the movie Superfly and this soundtrack came out in 1972. It was the biggest movie in the latino and black community as big if not bigger than Starwars or The Godfather. People don't realize but this was considered gangster music at the time. All the pimps, players and hustlers listened to this soundtrack in their 8 track players all day and night long. People who have commented have suggested this soundtrack made the movie. Nothing could be further from the truth, the movie and the soundtrack made each other. One enhanced the other, no more no less but equally which is why they are both timeless classics. I know, I lived it from the streets of NYC to Oakland California. Superfly and the Superfly Soundtrack is one if not the only soundtrack that completely complimented the each other. If you see the movie you think of the soundtrack, you listen to the soundtrack you think of the movie. Brilliance!
Please understand the era that this was recorded. The primo fantastic group of musicians' music and verse meanings were well beyond the superficial dance show. But it gave Curtis and Impressions an exposure and a bigger microphone to express their art and social expression.
The absolute greatest soul and R&B singing group that wrote, played and performed the majority of their own material. Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, were next in line, only because none of them performed while playing an instrument.
Say it's all right (It's all right) Say it's all right (It's all right) It's all right, have a good time 'Cause it's all right, whoa, it's all right We're gonna move it slow When lights are low When you move it slow, it sounds like more And it's all right, whoa, it's all right Now listen to the beat Kinda pat your feet You got soul, and everybody knows That it's all right, whoa, it's all right When you wake up early in the morning Feeling sad like so many of us do Hum a little soul Make life your goal And surely something's got to come to you And say it's all right (It's all right) Say it's all right (It's all right) It's all right, have a good time 'Cause it's all right, whoa, it's all right Now everybody clap your hands Give yourself a chance You got soul, and everybody knows That it's all right, whoa, it's all right Someday I'll find me a woman Who will love and treat me real nice Then my woe's got to go And my love, she will know From morning, noon, and night And she's got to Say it's all right (It's all right) Say it's all right (It's all right) It's all right, have a good time 'Cause it's all right, whoa, it's all right Now everybody clap your hands Now give yourselves a chance You got soul
Dude me too! I saw it there on youtube and seeing it while they were using the shovels and such was awesome! I love to listen to this song when doing chores!
its tragic what happened to Curtis but his songs let us know how great he was to EVERYBODY he was never negitive in anything that went on during his life he allways said if today wasnt the best day tomorrow is another day to change it and make it better than today
JOSEPH JAKUBEC .. Jerry left the impressions in 1958. VeeJay records split him off as a solo act. Fred Cash replaced Jerry and the group was a quintet through 1962 when the two Brooks Brothers left the group.... just before the hits came... major career fail for the Brooks Brothers.
@@PaulGoodeK I don't think this was a live performance, they were prolly lipsyncing. No orchestra, for one thing. So the original singers were "singing" even though not present. In those days there weren't as many managers/agents/lawyers/accountants running people's singing careers. So the fact he provided content for concerts he wasn't part of, was probably never even mentioned. 🤔 Or compensated.
Seems like yesterday.Where did the decades go?? Wow.. I always loved this song and ran down to buy my 45 of this song . I remember there were some songs I wanted to listen to over and over!!
The Impressions were fabulous! Curtis Mayfield is a musical legend. He also was a musical genius. Those dancers are very painful to watch, particularly those girls on stage.
I must share this with my daughter. As we constantly review Our History in American History Soul Music was always a comfort and a compass as our journey continues for Freedom in USA.
The First time I heard about him was during the "Superfly" Era but I didn't know he was also in the Impressions. I was 9 in 1975. Also The Impressions were part of Dick Clark's Early Career when American Bandstand was still based in Philadelphia. Red Schwartz A Salesman would come to show Dick Songs by up and coming Artists, there was a Song by them that Dick particularly didn't like but Red reasoned with him to play it. He agreed and it was a smash. It was played later on in the Afternoon where there was a One Hour Difference in Chicago where they recorded for Vee Jay Records. The Song was "For Your Precious Love"
Thank you for putting up the video. Growing up with there music I don't have to say how must I enjoy it. I may need to dig into some of my crates too. But looking at that segregated venue they where on. Having to preform in a room where there own families weren't allowed or welcome, must have been so hard to do.
I was about twelve years old when my neighbor, Martin McCoy had tickets to the old Buddy Dean dance show in Baltimore; 1963? It was broadcast from the Mondawmin Mall in northwest Baltimore. Only thing I remember is Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions, cool as ALL OUT, standing at the top of that spiral staircase over the fountain and pool singing, cool and smooth “It’s alright, have a good time.” Indelible, soulful!
