Game 4 between the Warriors and Lakers was a classic. What happened in the final minutes of the game? How did Anthony Davis and LeBron James stop Steph Curry down the stretch? This detailed film breakdown examines how Golden State hunted Anthony Davis as an adjustment, how the Lakers responded, and how that culminated in an incredible endgame that put LA up 3-1 in the 2023 Western Conference Semifinals.

The Lebron/AD duo is such an interesting thing to watch. AD is clearly the best defender and the sun everything revolves around. But I've noticed that Lebron has repeatedly called out the plays the Warriors (and Memphis) were about to run and communicated with AD in those moments. Bron is the brain behind the defense, but AD is the overall ability and versatility. Not sure I've ever seen that kind of combo before.
@gjfwang
@gjfwang Год назад
The guy closest to rim is responsible for calling defensive rotations and such. It’s usually ad but since they were pulling him out of the paint, Lebron ended up being the guy calling them. I know people want to give Lebron all the credit but just ad being in the game made the warriors go from off ball screens and What have we heard for the last 10 years? Steph is even more dangerous off the ball and gravity. What’s happening this series? AD just being on the court makes warriors abandon their offense for harden-rockets switch hunting
@X5J2UY
@X5J2UY Год назад
@@gjfwang I know how it usually works. But Lebron has been the one calling out most of the plays against GSW and Memphis as well even though he isn't closest to the rim. That's exactly why I find their dynamic so interesting. This isn't about taking credit away from AD. As I said - he is the best defender and most actions revolve around him. But it's interesting to see how they use LeBron's experience and knowledge of the game for communication and AD's abilities + athleticism to execute it all. It also shows how much AD and Lebron trust each other when it comes to recognizing and executing on the fly and in set plays. That's why I call it pretty unique.

@12gark
@12gark Год назад
Bron is clearly not the player he used to be, but his mind is as sharp as ever, and since everyone trusts everyone else on this team, they are able to communicate correctly and the defense has been amazing for the whole team, not just AD. Look at some footage from game 3, the game they put Vanderbilt on Draymond: Bron is calling the switch or the lock and trail play by play, and Reaves and Vanderbilt are executing perfectly. Reaves goes out, in comes Walker, Bron still there directing traffic, and the defense doesn't miss a step. On top of AD's historic defensive run, which is in no way reduced by this. Honestly, if you only watched this series without knowing anything about how these team are built, you'd have a hard time figuring out what team has a core that played together for a decade and an Hall of fame coach, and what team was assembled 2 months ago and have a rookie head coach. It's truly remarkable.

Funny thing is, whenyou slow it down, almost all of the warriors screens are illegal. Although many aren't egregious, they're all basically textbook illegal. Yes, every team uses illegal screens, but no team uses them nearly as much or as advantageously as the warriors. At 0:56 it's not the most egregious but GP's screen is illegal for two reasons. 1. he doesn't ever become stationary prior to setting the screen,, he even slides into to reaves. When you're screening a stationary player from the front or side, you don't have to give them a step to avoid the screen, but you do have to be stationary " except when both the screener and opponent are moving in the same path and the same direction." Reaves and GP go different directions here, so he needs to be stationary. Second, "The screener must stay within his/her vertical plane with a stance approximately shoulder width apart." look at how spread GP3s legs are, clearly not shoulder length apart, in fact not even close. And that's the least egregious screens, easily illegal. at 1:12 is that even a screen? he never even sets, he just shows for half a second to slow Schroder down and then rolls? I'm fine with not calling this, but i'm pretty sure that whatever it is, is illegal. at 1:20 GP once again never becomes stationary, slides into shcroder and then holds. He's not "within his/her vertical plane with a stance approximately shoulder width apart." he's basically pass blocking schroder from getting to curry. hella illegal. same for at 1:30, he's never truly stationary before the screen, he's not going in the same direction as reaves, so he needs to be stationary he's not within his vertical plane and once again he's leaning into the opponnent. Do I need to go into this more? the warriors main actions rely on them breaking the rule in multiple ways, consistently. The NBA refuses to call this shit, the NBA promotes it. So i'd like to hear less about refereeing influence when your whole offensive strategy is based around the refs not calling obvious illegal moves. And these that I pointed out aren't even the most egregious just the first 3 screens, literally.
@valentino.m.g

@joinerSUjagsbluengol
@joinerSUjagsbluengol Год назад
@@valentino.m.g I agree, I just think that's it's become so common that most of us don't even question it. Like hey, that advantage is actually unfair. Like they called an offensive foul on someone in game 4, and I disagreed but then they showed the replay and it was definitely an illegal screen, but they do it so often, that I didnt initially think it was illegal. Which is why it's comical for GSW fans to get on their high horses about officiating. Your entire offense is based around biased officiating. Just because analysts don't acknowledge it, doesn't mean it's not true.

This really reminds me of the bubble team that was good enough defensively to deal with different offensive looks. The problem with the Warriors is that they end up trading something if they play offense a certain way. Spam Curry PNR: shooters just stand around & there’s not a lot of movement. Curry off-ball: he can still get his, but everyone on the Lakers can harass him when he’s running around & GSW doesn’t have another good ball-handler. Go small: Lakers punish them inside on the other end & live at the line. They can still win, but their margin for error is nothing compared to what it used to be 4-5 years ago.

In the last 2 games, the Warriors were 29% from three with many good looks! they shot 33% from 3's in game 1,3 and 4 combined! edit: Do I really need to write like a 3-4 paragraph post to talk about ALL the factors? Just because I didn't mention something doesn't mean I don't give it credit. Yes, the Lakers defense is a huge factor but that was expected. The thing that jumps out to me is that Steph curry has to play like Houston rockets James harden when AD is on the court. 10 years of hearing about gravity and Steph being more dangerous off ball and off ball screen actions. but AD being on the court has the warriors running hero ball and the high pick and roll offenses from 15 years ago.
@zoulzopan
@zoulzopan Год назад
Yeah AD is shutting down the other players and the only one making consistent basket is Curry so he has to be the one running point, or else it's going to be turn overs the entire game like in game 3.

I think the Warriors also want at least 2 shooters spreading the floor when Steph runs PnR to attack AD, otherwise the spacing gets too clogged. When AD's on Wiggins, that generally leaves 2 nonshooters the Lakers can help off of (Draymond and Payton/Moody/Divincenzo) to guard the short roll.

I am definitely curious to see how Darvin Ham will combat the whole Anthony Davis being hunted and pulled away from the key strategy going forward. It was distressing to see as a Lakers fan in game 4 because the Warriors were having so much success with it. I thought that it was perplexing as to why GSW minimized their usage of it in the 2nd half. Being down 3-1, I expect that GSW will use that play excessively in game 5 and I also anticipate huge games from both Curry and Thompson who has been relatively quiet this series.

Do the Lakers try and counter this by preswitching or hedging to keep AD where he's best served? Even a soft zone can keep AD in the paint. You might as well let Curry get what he wants and deny everyone else like what teams used to do against young Jordan.

The Nuggets can definitely borrow this game plan and maybe even be more effective at it since they have no non-shooting threats. Everyone can hit a shot at a high percentage if left wide open. I'm definitely going to look out for that Murray-LeBron matchup. They're probably gonna pull that out to slow down the Jokic Murray PnR and just have AD switch on to Murray and have LeBron switch to Jokic, but then you'd just have to hope LeBron can slow Jokic without the help of a double (an impossible task imo). I would think Vanderbilt would be the one doing this, but in the Warriors series he was playing less and less minutes because he was such a liability on offense, and Denver loves to sag or completely ignore non-shooters so they're probably not gonna have Vanderbilt on the floor too much, but he definitely could replace LeBron in matching up with Murray. If it's not LeBron or Vanderbilt guarding Murray, they're just gonna run that unstoppable Murray Jokic two man action where Jokic either gets switched on to a small guard or would kill them in the short roll. Denver is a much deeper team than the Warriors with better shooters. Denver in 6-7.

It's much easier to guard a player when you know exactly what they're hunting for in most situations. Having the height advantage just compounds thag issue. Still amazing defense nonetheless
