I love ghost Zelda in Spirit Tracks. I love that part where she keeps insisting Link go out and save the day himself, saying it’s a family tradition, while getting closer to his face and more manic with every sentence.

Not a lot of people know but there's another reason Kirby and Wart are in Link's Awakening. In addition to being a reference, Koholint Island is a dream... Kirby is from Dreamland... and Wart is from Subcon, which is a land of dream. It took me years to realize it's a double reference.

Personally as someone who really gets a kick out of timed gameplay mechanics i've always liked the temple of the ocean king. Everytime you come back you bring in something new and have knowledge of what you've already done, so you can find ways to cut down on the time you spent originally creating a more efficient path with every revisit. It reminds me a lot of why i enjoy Majora's Mask so much.
@chaosprime1629
@chaosprime1629 Год назад
temple of the ocean king is the only dungeon outside of two in majora's mask where you can reuse small keys. the dungeon itself does have a weak start, but it gets much better after each revisit. yes there are some clunky moments, but i argue this is one of the most innovative dungeons in the series and deserves a lot more respect. i also like how you have two locked doors and if you keep your small key from the revisit you can skip one of them to unlock a shortcut and during end game, there is the challenge of trying to get to the end with minimal time loss. while i do like the puzzles and individual floor design more in the tower of spirits overall, i do agree with the criticism that it was overcorrected especially how it is really 6 separate dungeons. also interconnectivity is somewhat lacking in the tower of spirits while temple of the ocean king does a better job because of being a continuous dungeon (although i think it could have handled more). that being said it does have a proper end game portion which ocean king lacks. overall though while tower of spirits has better puzzles and a proper end game dungeon, i argue temple of the ocean king is overall the better dungeon. i also think the timer in ocean king does add to the challenge. removing it, and it feels a lot less challenging where you can no longer be as strategic.

Maybe that's a sign I gotta play more Zelda games, but I fell in love with the style and characters. Even the RNG figurines were a charming way to view the characters' sprites! Now that I think about it, if Nintendo ever wanted to bring legacy games to mobile then the DS duology of Zelda games would be perfect. They were basically made with “portrait mode” in mind, and would work probably flawlessly on any modern iPhone or Android.
@Korobooshii

The controls for those games were unbeatable! Gyro-aiming, like in OoT3D, is also really good - but it doesn't come close to the control you had of every single action in the DS games.

@Korobooshii Год назад
It's a shame fingers are so much thicker than a stylus, otherwise I would agree. The precision with the stylus is impeccable, but using your finger to control Link is really clumsy, and I am sure that would be the case on a phone as well. If there are Styluses for phones, though (might be, I dunno), I agree this would be perfect! It could also work on the Switch's touchscreen, as long as there is some Stylus-compatability. And releasing them on Nintendo Hardware sounds more likely than on phone, as long as the hardware has good touch.

As fun as being small in Minish Cap is and being able to explore regular environments that are now supersized, I really think the parts where you're a two-pixel tall Link in the regular world is a huge missed opportunity. Take 26:25 in the video for instance. How much cooler wouldn't it be to cross that plank on top of the house if it were presented as a huge bridge with spiders or ants and other obstacles. Or talking to the dog and it taking up almost the entire screen. I think that is my main problem with Minish Cap: the game doesn't push the small-Link-in-a-huge-world gimmick to its limits.
@shadowledastray

36:15 While Temple of the Ocean King is a bit repetitive, it's actually a really cool concept. Every time you return, you have new items that unlock shortcuts get through previous floors, some of which basically skip entire floors. So each visit usually involves taking a different path or solving puzzles an alternate way. It's a great way to show progression, and mastery over this area that is legitimately quite spooky once you first enter. I actually prefer it over Temple of Spirits, simply because all of that depth is lost with the new setup.
@19Szabolcs91
@19Szabolcs91 Год назад
While there were a few shortcuts here and there, most of the steath sections played out the exact same way. If they wanted to make a dungeon where you repeat the same floors with new items to be faster... it really should have been a faster, more viscerally fun experience. Not sure what's possible with these top down controls, but still... Even stealth first, combat second is a better way, which, to be fair they did at the end, but that was too little too late.

I'm a temple of the Ocean King defender You aren't just replaying it, you have more items, which means you can explore new paths, and after you get the Phantom Sword, you can kill the Phantoms and it feels so good to get that ability. Also the final 3 objections can be completed in any order, and the optimal way is to complete a section of the OTemple (you get it lol) with less gear (like no Bombchus or grappling hook) which is admitly a fun challenge. I personally feel that the Spirit temple in Spirit Tracks fails for me because you have to climb up all the steps everytime you want to do any floor, and it just leaves me bored. It's something that hinders repeat playthroughs and even just checking if you can get something new from a floor a lot. Other than that, it's a good dungeon, definitely trickier than OTemple, but I don't know why you have to go back to it repeatably, it just doesn't make sense mechanicly compared to the OTemple. You wouldn't lose much gameplay wise if the Spirit Temple was scattered about the world.

@@miwestraveler3986 good point. Maybe if they had the optional extra dungeon stations work with Phantom Zelda. I think my thoughts on it would actually be a bit better if they had some of it spread out. Having everything centralized around the OTemple made sense narratively and gameplay wise in Phantom Hourglass, while only narratively with the Tower of Spirits in Spirit Tracks. If the best of both Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks were in one game, we might have one of the best games in the franchise. I love Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks, but I get why some people don't
@chaosprime1629
@chaosprime1629 Год назад
tower of spirits is also one of the main reasons spirit tracks is so linear. an idea i had what would have made the game more interesting is if you have an intended set order but if you access some of the side quests that unlock new rails you can access dungeons earlier. tower of spirits should have been a refined temple of the ocean king which once again recontexulizes on the new items and shortcuts found while taking notes. tower of spirits lacks this outside of optional content which is randomized treasures in the earlier floors.
@mr.tatortot6469
@mr.tatortot6469 Год назад
The Temple of The Ocean King is such a devisive dungeon; you either like it or hate it. Why should you revisit the same dungeon over and over and replaying the previous floors just to get to the new thing. But then every visit you have a new item to speed up your new attempt as you unlock new shortcuts or even entirely skip some floors. This just itches my brain for efficiency and the game even let's you get 2 seacharts, where you'd only get 1, if you're ballsy enough to do so as you don't have enough time to accommodate the extra floors.

Also just saying the sprite work for the game is absolutely gorgeous in some places and is just immaculate. My mind will never be swayed on these opinions even with how good totk has been.

Never thought I'd hear someone say that having the dungeon item at the start in ALBW was a good thing. I always liked the struggle of navigating past obstacles until you find the thing that lets you interact with them. It always felt like you were getting more powerful with each one. But above all, one thing the Game Boy Zeldas excelled at that most titles didn't, is keeping your dungeon items relevant through the entire game. I love how LA gives you the Roc's Feather, then later the Pegasus Boots, and quickly expects you to figure out that you can use them together. Beautiful.

The original Link's Awakening has a super simple screen warp if you open your map the moment you move screens. It's so fun to play around with. Still completely worth it in my opinion.

21:48 woah woah woah antdude I’m not sure if you played the starforce games but they’re definitely not bad like you’re implying. The three simultaneous versions is ridiculous I’ll give you that but the story, gameplay and music in these games are all solid. In fact I’d say the starforce series overall is better than the battle networks series

Btw, if you didn't win the flute in the baseball minigame, you wouldn't get Ricky. And if you didn't buy it at the secret shop, you wouldn't get Dimitri. Therefore, the beanbag chair Moosh would have been the default option in Ages. And in Seasons, Ricky is the default buddy if you started with that instead.

Oracle of Ages was my OG 2d Zelda. I played that Christmas 2001. Fall of that same year I had just played Ocarina of Time I was in third grade. I got to about as far as the water temple, and then took me another year to to make any more progress. Same thing happened in Oracle of Ages, I got to a certain dungeon that was pretty far into the game and then had to give up for a little while. I'll never forget me laying on the couch with my parents house cursing at my Game Boy when that mini game where you have to dance with the gorons and then the one where you try to get the noble sword.

In terms of usefulness, I do have to agree Ricky is the obvious choice. He has clear utility, while Moosh often needs obstacle courses built around him and Dimitri can be made redundant by the flippers. If I were to choose my subjective favorite, though, I’m a Dimitri fan.

There was just something about the handheld era that had this magical feeling about it accompanied with the simple convenience of taking a game anywhere you wanted on a battery charge. It's crazy to imagine how something just as plainly neat as portability can inspire concepts that can make games like the Zelda series go in a direction that's exempt from tradition. For that I will always love the bursts of creativity and cleverness in titles like Link's Awakening and Phantom Hourglass. Also Temple of the Ocean King sucks balls but I still like Phantom Hourglass more than Spirit Tracks, but I still appreciate the latter for the liveliness in its world that's missing in Phantom Hourglass.

You know, you talk about mods a lot. I’m surprised you have never covered the Majora’s mask project restoration mod for the 3ds. Fixes essentially all the issues diehard fans were upset about with the remake. Would be something to feature in another potential Zelda mod video. Of course, maybe don’t include BotW mods because Nintendo will come after you… Edit: Oh, and ocarina of time 3D is perfect. I don’t know if anyone who gets upset about that remake.

I think the reason that so many people see the two Oracle games as two halves of the same whole is not because of the Pokemon effect. It's probably due to how the two game interact with each other as you move on from one adventure to the next whether its from Ages to Seasons or from Seasons to Ages and how you interact with both games in the second adventure. Heck, there's even a password at the end of the second adventure that lets you play the two games in the opposite order. You started in Ages and ended in Seasons. This password basically lets you NG+, but from Seasons ending in Ages. You'll start with 4 hearts instead of 3 and you'll be able to use the Ring Secret to get any rings you had at the end of the second adventure, but, other than that, your Seasons playthrough will be vanilla.

Tracing a path for the boomerang on the touch screen? That reminds me of a similar giimick in the "Transformers: Animated" DS game. You trace a path on the touch screen, and Optimus will throw his axe along the path you drew. (Bulkhead will do a similar thing with his wrecking balls.)

9:02 The "wiggly enemies" are known as Buzz Blobs, and they only turn into Cukeman if you sprinkle Magic Powder on them. They also only spout random nonsense after being transformed, and they don't speak when they zap you, it's either or; you get zapped if you slash it or they speak if you talk to them. 9:28 Your save file is changed to "THIEF" the moment you steal something, even if you never go back and have the shopkeeper kill you. 11:29 The acorns give you a defense boost. It's the "Pieces of Power" that give you an attack boost. While they do go away after being hit enough, they also just naturally go away after enough time has passed. 25:24 Ezlo made the Mage's Cap, he wasn't given it.

The DS games are some of my favourites, and it has a lot with the control scheme to do. Really, almost any DS-game with Touch Controls only that I've played are amazing. It feels so intuituve, and really absorbs you into the game. It also won't make your hands hurt like regular controllers with buttons might do. Absolutely the peak of gaming if you ask me, it's a shame it will likely never happen again. I was quite disappointed Link Between Worlds wasn't a touch-controlled game. Or more like, I am disappointed there wasn't a Touch Only- Zelda game for the 3DS. It's such a shame. Link Between Worlds and Triforce Heroes are both great, but you just can't beat the feeling of actually controlling Link with your hand. Considering the 3DS was probably the last chance to make games like that, it also feels like such a missed opportunity that they didn't make another one.

I can’t get mad at Spirit Track for the Train mechanic acting like a train, I mean you can only travel on the tracks that exist. Now the only thing that could be done if wanted to do in like a remake is to make it the spirit tracks really like a spirit and have it where the original tracks are their but you can disconnect from them and drive the Train over any piece of land and the tracks will appear below you like a spirit. I also happen to like Trains so I will be biased. Lol

Fun thing about Minish Cap, it was made with the idea that it's the earliest game in the timeline. Which is why Vati appears a few times as a villain, and the Picori Blade was meant to be a precursor to the Master Sword. Currently it sits as the second entry in the classic timeline, right after Skyward Sword. Meaning Vati is Demise's first reincarnation.

Honestly though, imagine Wind Waker being released now BUT with Phantom Hourglass as a second part included completely remade in the Wind Waker engine... and as much as I'd not care if Spirit Tracks was included, I think if it was in the same engine the whole package could be.. insane.. maybe?

There was a time where I thought nothing could ever beat LttP as my favorite Zelda, yet it only took one play through for LBW to overthrow it. Easily my favorite Zelda, 3DS game, and one of my favorite games of all time. I just wish I could get it on Switch, I wouldn't even care in the slightest paying $60 for it. I don't play my 3DS much any more because it's just not that comfortable to play for longer sessions. It doesn't even take 2 hours for my hands to start cramping.

Man, I absolutely adore the portable Zelda games. Granted I haven't played the ds ones yet, but the other ones are all master class imo. They all feel so unique and interesting from each other. And when it comes to A Link Between Worlds, I daresay it far surpasses A Link to the Past for me. I hadnt had my expectations so blown away by a Zelda game in such a long time. Its unbelievable just how well crafted that game is: the pacing, dungeon designs, seemless gameplay, wall mechanics, its all just so MWAH lol. Antdude didnt mention the OST but I think the game also has one of my favorite OSTs in the franchise. Love that game to death
