Thank you so much man. I put a ton of effort into the digitization process to get the highest quality possible. Going to be a lot more rare high quality footage to come on this channel so stay tuned for that!
@@gridironlore33-18 Would love to see some Tennessee footage from 98! I had given up on seeing broadcast quality cfb games on youtube. Everything out there is 144p reuploads. Keep it up man!
Yeah this video was truly amazing. Also a Clemson fan but you perfectly encapsulated how the rivalry heated up after we finally snapped such a long drought in 74. Good luck tomorrow and looking forward to many matchups to come
Great video! I grew up in Georgia, so I’ve always loved this rivalry, even though it has only been played a handful of times in my life. And, I hate Georgia more than anybody including South Carolina and NC State.
I grew up watching Georgia and Clemson battle in the 80s. Was one of the top rivalries in all college football at that time. Looking forward to next weekend. Should be a good one. GATA Dawgs
When doing research for this video I was amazed at how great the rivalry was in the 80s. 7 of the 8 games were one score games, with the only one not included being the 1981 9 turnover game, and even that one was only a 10 point deficit. Can't wait for next weekend, I think it will be closer then most people expect. Go Dawgs!
Great recap of the rivalry. One of the best I have seen. Thanks for putting this together and sharing it with us. A lot of people do not realize how great this rivalry was, especially from 1977-'87 when the two teams were 5-5-1 in those 11 meetings against each other and the average margin of victory was 4.7 points. I hate that these two rivals, who are only 70 miles apart, do not play every year anymore.
I appreciate the love man. I wish these 2 played each other every year, that decade you mention is what got me to make this video in the first place. I couldn't believe just how closely contested each and every game was, not to mention the national championship implications that came along with it.
A very timely post. I have a few thoughts about the Clemson-Georgia Series. The 1980 & 1981 games took this series to a new level. I was fortunate enough to see the 1986 & 1987 games in person. Both were two of the best college football games that I've ever seen in person. This series was the most important college football series in the country for the first half of the 1980's.. Florida State, Florida and Miami were waiting in the wings. It was shocking to see all of the missed tackles during these highlights. During the early 1980's four athletes towered over college sports. Ralph Sampson, Michael Jordan, Patrick Ewing and Herchel Walker. Amazingly Sampson and Ewing stayed four years while Jordan and Walker stayed three years. Unheard of in today's NIL system.
19:58 I was in the band for Clemson for this game, and let me tell you, being on that field for pregame, you couldn't even hear yourself think with how loud and hyped up the crowd was!
I believe that's me in the white hat, center of that frame. Was a wild game. Made my way down to the fence to watch it at the front. Back when you could buy a student ticket for $10 and they never questioned your ID from 8 years ago.
haha i was there for that game and honestly it might be a three way tie between that game and the notre dame and louisville games as the loudest I have ever experienced
@@ericwirfs5578 should have read your comment more closely. My mom won a clemson band auction, but I was never a part of the band, so the autographed drum skin (I have no clue what it's actually called), band shirt, and band bumper sticker are just collecting dust. Would like them to go to someone who can appreciate them if you want them. We go to every home game and tailgate in lot 5 (west endzone)
He did not show it, but there was a play when it looked on t.v. that Herschel crossed the goal line and was pushed back over and the refs ruled no touchdown.
My man you should keep doing Rivalry series!! I know Georgia is your school but if you were to do this for rivalries throughout the country that'd be awesome!!
Much appreciated man. I've got another rivalry video planned for a few weeks from now, but I'll definitely consider doing more rivalry videos in the future!
As not just a Clemson fan, but a fan of college football, I really loved this video. I like how you even though you’re a Georgia fan you describe this rivalry for exactly what it is. Historically, Georgia dominates this rivalry,, however, the past 30 to 40 years have been very competitive, with Georgia still taking the lead. I love this series between these two bitter rivals,, and I can’t wait for another edition of it when it kicks off on August 31st. Go tigers!
Born in 75 a UGA fan. I live 45 minutes from Clemson and 55 minutes from Athens. Went to all UGA home games (and some away) from 80 to 2005. My father still has season tix. My kids go but I don't. 80 UGA then 81 Clemson made this "not anymore annual" rivalry one of the best in sports. Maybe it's because I'm an 80's kid but this rivalry was intense. All through the 80's this was must see. I'm excited for this year's game. Go Dawgs! I must say I grew up hating Clemson but have grown to respect them and pull for them as my second team (blasphemy for a UGA fan) This year's game will be close!
I grew up being told to hate Clemson, being in an entire gamecock fan family in columbia. After setting foot on the campus, I was awestruck and was one of only 6 in my graduating class to enroll there in 2005. My wife's dad (he passed away before we got married) was a trainer on clemson's '81 team and had an ongoing bet with a UGA fan friend, where he'd have to put a bulldog statue in front his house if clemson lost, and vice versa with a tiger, until the two met again.
I did live in Athens for a year in 2013 before moving back home (to me) to the upstate, 25 minutes from clemson, and the rivalry definitely lost fire, so much that I would just wear my clemson stuff out and all the fans and students just welcomed me, saying "hey we both hate usc!" The worst comment I got was "clemson sucks!" while watching the 2014 matchup at Cutter's pub in Athens. I still really love the town, but being 27 in a college town on the east side, walking distance to campus, was a bit tough. Every so often we still venture there to tube down the river. Only went to one game (vs App St) there in 2013 and it's a great gameday atmosphere. If this year's edition wasn't in Atlanta and at noon, I'd have gone, but we're saving our annual away game for Virginia Tech.
Lastly, any dislike I have for UGA is directly a result of kirby smart being an Alabama product. I know Richt didn't take the team to the next level, but I respected him as a coach for continually stringing together 9+ win seasons. If I had to pick an SEC team to root for, it'd be UGA. Unfortunately being 15 minutes from the border of GA means there are a few obnoxious fans where I used to work, but I just point out I've seen the dawgs in person more times than they have and that usually quiets them.
It may not have had a classic ending but the story around the 1991 game was pretty neat. I can understand why its forgotten. The gane was played in Athens just hours after the Braves clinched the 1991 NL West. In fact both bands in pregame saluted the Braves by playing the Tomahawk Chop. Dawgs led by Eric Zier would upset the ranked Tigers
Wow I did not know all of the back story surrounding this game. I didn’t include it since it wasn’t particularly close, but it certainly sounds like a fascinating gem in football history
As a UGA fan who was 10 years old at the time, this was THE game! Eric Zeier’s breakout game. It’s in my top 5 Clemson / Georgia games. Probably the most forgotten one is 1996. At Clemson, not televised, and Georgia beat Clemson. Clemson wore some crazy throwback helmets
@@philjohnson1281 I think you mean 1995 (they didn't play in '96), but yeah, that was a classic. UGA was without Hines Ward, Robert Edwards, Randall Godfrey, Travis Stroud, and several others. Really should have included that one along with 1991, as well as 1985, and 1978 (the Wonderdogs year).
I was at that game. The crowd was electric (sparked by the Braves winning he division after so many years of disappointment), the media didn't give UGA a chance, and the Clemson team was very overconfident - you had a feeling that UGA had a good chance of upsetting Clemson - and they did!
@@gridironlore33-18 the 1980/81 games are amazing. The juxtaposition of the stats in each game(80 Clemson dominates but UGA wins & all the Turnovers in 81 yet Clemson wins by 10pts only) plus the winner went on to win it all each respective year, that's what makes college ball the best game on the planet IMO. Can't wait for Saturday Afternoons contest! #ItsAlwaysFootballSeasonInHeaven
@XDrang93 oh definitely. I would have sawed off right leg at the hip to hear him make that call. Scott isn't bad, but that call under Munson would have went down in legend with Run Lindsey Oh god a td My god a freshman And the hobnail
Still can't believe Dooley went for 2 in 1977 after the penalty (try was from the 8 yard line instead of the 3) - and then running the same play as the TD. Crazy.
I have to wonder if Dooley would have kicked the extra point if overtime existed back then. I think he understood that anything but a win would mean Georgia would fall out of the rankings. That game is a hidden gem.
@@gridironlore33-18 Good question. I believe I recall him saying, after overtime started in 1995, that he would have played for overtime because he felt we had the better team.
Feel like 1991 should have been included. Memorable day. Clemson came to Athens ranked #6 to play an unranked Georgia team. Braves won the NL West. Sanford Stadium did the chop. Dawgs upset the Tigers 27-12.
What about the 1991 game? I remember everyone (Georgia and Clemson) doing the tomahawk chop when they announced that the Braves have cliched the NL west.
I forgot to include Clemson outside of the SEC as one of the programs UGA pushed past in national dominance in CFB in this past era. This rivalry alone is historic but even the crossover between Clemson being the national champion every other year with Dabo to Kirby Smart and UGA’s ascension as national championship fixtures is just as relevant. Respect to Clemson and it just adds to how tough it was for UGA to get to where they are now.
Much appreciated, he was truly one of a kind. I've got plenty more rare Munson calls that are going to be featured on this channel in the future so stay tuned for that!
It’s Clemson’s team record for turnovers forced, but it is not Georgia’s team record for turnovers. This is because Georgia holds the NCAA record for single game turnovers with 13 in a 48-6 loss against Georgia Tech in 1951
I tried to keep it to the one score games. While that one was close through 3 quarters it turned into a bit of a blowout for the dawgs, and it’s important to stay as unbiased as possible in videos like these
