The story of Lay's potato chips began in the early 1930s, during the Great Depression, with an ambitious salesman named Herman Lay. Lay had a vision of creating a snack that would bring people joy during a time of economic hardship. His passion for the snack food industry led him to Nashville, Tennessee, where he opened his own snack food operation in 1932. Lay's business started small, but he was determined to make it a success. He traveled throughout the southern United States, selling his potato chips from the trunk of his car to local grocery stores, restaurants, and individual customers.
