This guitar has been getting some traction lately within the Gear community, so let me tell you my experience with it! Check it out here 🔴reverb.com/item/34881364?_aid=growsumo&gs_partner=Trogly It is a cool piece, I just wish it was in better shape and had better documentation
Thanks for the love of my guitars!! This one checks out completely under the black light. No breaks or repairs. I will post pics of the control area Monday to show factory wiring and the back of the pickups/pickup routing. Reason for the price fluctuation is simply because I was trying to sell a few things before the weekend to buy a collection but I sold a few other things so the price went back up. Also, the '79 Les Paul Standard is the first factory, two-piece, bookmatched, Flame Maple Standard made since the end of the 1960 production year.....hence the price.
@@TylerRoeGuitar yeah, I wouldn't be able to say either way. I'm no expert at all. If everything is fine it is unfortunate that it has an area that needs questioning. 😃Cheers
I really like the vibe and potential for such a limited model. The finish "wear" to the top of the headstock carve seems - odd. The finish cracking at a high stress point is concerning. The wildly fluctuating and inflated asking price is a complete turn-off. This needs a black light review!
I think this guitar really highlights the “gambling “ element of being a collector. You might end up with a real diamond or it might be a Frankenstein’s monster that someone has cobbled together. I don’t collect, so this would be a hard pass for me, but I could understand why others might be tempted.
If you pause it at 6:16 where Austin is talking about his concerns with the neck and he pauses the spinning of the guitar, you can see a line running across the neck from the low side to the high side, it actually looks like two lines one just above the other. This could just be finish checking but it happens to run right there and with the questions about the neck and a possible head stock repair, maybe this is proof? It's a beautiful guitar for sure. Edit - after going back to the 5:57 mark where Austin first discusses a possible neck issue you can see there are actually three lines that do run from high to low sides but they look like finish cracking lines. But what I am seeing is it looks like underneath the nitro the white paint is gone and it's bare wood we are looking at and that is not normal wear.
Not gonna lie, wish I had the disposable income to snag that one. That thing looks incredible. I don't even care if it had bland pickups, isn't an actual artisan, or had any replaced electronics. Good luck on whoever picks that one up. I'm a little jealous.
Great video Austin! The more I learn about Gibson Les Pauls, the more I want to understand their history. I like the way you break it down and put critical thinking skills to work. I’m very close to emailing you for help in buying my next Les Paul. Again, great job, keep it up!
I would indeed rock this Artisan. So unfortunate about the price being all over the place, sometimes these things just happen. To the Seller and the Owner if you're reading this, that is a really cool guitar.
The price changes are to pop up with "MASSIVE PRICE DROP!" notifications for everyone who's watching. Get a bunch of watchers at $7k (as an over-value) for a few days, drop it to $4k (what you hope to get) and see if you get offers/sales while you gain more watchers. If that doesn't work, raise the price to $6k for a day, then drop it to $3800 and see if anyone who gets the price drop notification bites. Keep doing that until it sells.
Yeah, that is curious from the seller. I've seen plenty of other guitars from that seller (i recognized the name) and some of them listed for a while but i can't say i noticed any price fluctuations like that.
That Inlay chipping is always there on the older models, A few years ago, I passed on an 80’s LP special for 299.00 in a pawn shop near the NJ Shore. I saw the finish chipping on the inlaid MOP Gibson logo, and thought it was a cheep copy and passed... I learned about that being a telltale sign it was an authentic LP Special.
I have both a ' 78 Artisan and an '03 LP Custom Lite and love them both. This thing interests me but not at that price or In that condition. Also, a good chance the neck isn't straight.
I played that very guitar at Idlewild guitars in Savannah GA. There are no problems. It plays great sounds wonderful plays like butter light as a feather and a cool Gibson.
I never cared much about how a guitar looks but more how do they sound, how they play. Are they easy to play with my size hands. Les pauls are my favorite guitars but I was never able to find one that a size 10 hands could play easily until I tried the Les Paul Less plus! It is very light and the thickness of these Les Paul Lites! I found that even a thin Les Paul still sounds the same! I would like to see more of these Lites or even get a chance to play one would be great too! Thanks for the vid....
Hi Trogly, Today (September 1st) its price is $7.995,95. He added a some more pictures of pickups and cavities and some black-light too. Unfortunately I am not skilled enough to understand IF looks legit or not… Pots are linear 300K, (70043) from CTS (R137) made on 04 1988 (8804) if I am not mistaken. Electronics is preassembled on a metal plate. Middle pick-up cavity was not an afterthought, At least two pickups has a nickeled metal black (with a lot of green oxide?) and the Pat no punched on them. I would be curious to see an update from you.
I Have a Gibson Custom Shop L5 Studio in WHITE, that needed Gibson to fix a HORRIBLE STAIN caused by a Guitar Stand (before any warnings) !! The stand manufacturer paid to have Gibson Custom Shop restore it !! Gibson had it about a Year, and when it was returned they forgot their Custom Shop Decal !! It was very difficult for Gibson CS to “restore it” especially since it was so Rare. I Guess they Never took pictures before they touched it ??
Keith Williams at Five Watt World has done this for a bunch of guitars (and other things) including the SG, Les Paul, Explorer, Flying V and the ES-335...they are great videos...here's the link to his YT video page...ru-vid.comvideos
I LOVE the Inlay work, plus the Ebony Fretboard. Definitely digging the three pickups and Cream color, But not so much the thinness of the instrument. Hey Austin......... Could you Showcase an 81 - 82 Washburn Eagle, I just can't seem to get much Information about this instrument. If anyone can find anything out about this Guitar, it would be You. Anyways Thank you for another Great Vid, check you on the next one.🎸💚
I'm sure the weight-reduction would make it seem worthwhile until the novelty wears off... then, it's back to the full-bodied LP of your choice, if you're any kind of a player - which you've proven to be - at which point, you could use the "lite" as a paddle for your kayak.
The inlays on the fingerboard? Lukas Nelson(Willie's son),has a 56 Les Paul junior singlecut single p90, single volume single tone, sunburst finish with a black pickguard. signature edition. With those types of inlays on the fingerboard if I am correct.
Yes, I'd rock it. $5000 sounds about right. I love guitars that have been loved much and played more because of it. Question: Does that volute look a little off? Lighting, angle, the 80's or custom?
He’s not indecisive he’s playing with reverbs algorithm. If he’s constantly lowering his price it gets featured more so more people will see his store and he gets better exposure. It’s not rocket science. He’s a punk either way. He sets huge prices and then sets them to just above reasonable and that way it shows the price drop but if someone buys it at the “discounted” price he still ends up getting WAY more than it’s worth. He’s a con man
That's not a con man. He chooses the price and if you are stupid enough to overpay for something without doing research beforehand, then it's your own problem. No one's making anyone buy anything. Not a scam in the least bit
@@aaronwetzel1981 i hear this argument said about everywhere, that a seller can sell as they please as if the free market were an anarchist wild west. It shows a total misunderstanding of the free market. A seller can NOT charge at their whim. There are various concepts built into the free market model to keep this from ocurring. Those being "just price" or "fair price" among others. In fact, it's illegal to charge exorbitant prices and there's various names for it, "price gauging" or in this case "profiteering" is more apt.
@@sv1201 that's a claim. I dont see how affirming a claim, makes your affirmation convincing. You see, claims aren't evidence. You have to address the issue of how luxury items are exempt from just or fair price, and then maybe you can start to lay a foundation for justifying exemption, but till then you're doing nothing more than what amounts to special pleading.
@@sv1201 and how do we know it's a luxury item? That's a presumption on your part. It comes off as a hacked up parts knockoff, IMHO. Certainly questionable.
I wonder if the custom shop logo would show up under black light. Even a faint hint of it being there. The fact that there is basically no wear on the back of the headstock at the point of the "Volute", so to speak, tells me it's been resprayed. Somebody that spent that much time at the end of the fretboard, would have worn some of the paint down on the point there. And clearly, it hasn't been worn. No sweat stains, looks pretty new to me compared to the rest of the guitar.
One of my coworkers bought a first run 1959 RI for $4800 locally here a couple of months ago. The guy had it listed locally here at $7000 for months-no way that’s a $10,000 guitar.
Trogly's being nice. that guitar has clearly had 'Standard Gibson Headbreak' it's a good repair (and probably stronger than originally) but that head has been off.
If there was only a Troglodytes that lived in the area where this guitar is. Was it Nashville? They could contact, photograph ask many more questions which Trogley had. Talk to the original owner if possible etc.
I saw a les paul custom light in hot pick with a Kahler? def locking nut trem in the late Eighties in Lewiston Maine kinda freaked me out but I would totally play a white one
The guitar is definitely a cool piece, regardless of the minor flaws, and at 5k, I think I'd pull the trigger if I didn't have any other priorities. Too bad the seller is such a clown. I think most people would be a little concerned to say the least when the price keeps jumping all over the place and the seller alternates between cocky and desperate every few hours or so.
I would not rock that guitar on a boat or a goat. I'm not big on 3 pickups or the colors it has become. I would rock that brown one at the end, though I'm not big on the banjo styling.
Well, I live near Savannah Ga, and I’m familiar with the “owner” of idlewild guitars. He’s a huge allman brothers fan/ southern rock fan in general. He claims a lot of his “innovatory” was previously owned or on consignment by well known/ famous musicians such as Crosby Stills and Nash, Gregg Allman, Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi, and BlackBerry Smoke. Problem is there’s not enough evidence to suggest he’s being 100% honest. His stories about famous customers and “famous” guitars he’s had in his possession tend to change sometimes drastically. I personally know people who have sold guitars to him. I had a friend that sold him a white early 90’s 67’ Flying V reissue back around December, a few weeks latter he post a 92’ V allegedly singed and owned by Bo Didlley on reverb for 9k. I don’t know for sure if the white V he’s selling is my buddy’s old guitar or not. I’m just saying given the man’s reputation it’s kinda suspect.
Never had a Crosby, Stills or Nash guitar. Never had a Susan Tedeschi guitar or a Derek Trucks guitar. Have sold three guitars to Derek. Sold a half dozen guitars to Gregg while he was alive. I never bought a '67 Reissue V in December. I've had that 1992 Gibson V since 2002. I've been in retail since 1998. Have owned several stores and have sold 100's of guitars. I don't need to make a story to sell a guitar.
This seller is a real a-hole for exploiting Reverb's price drop feature like that. As cool as this guitar is, the lack of a Custom Shop Edition decal puts me off too much to justify paying 10k for it
I hate any seller that puts up a vintage guitar for sale and doesn't show at least 1 picture of inside the control cavity or the pots/electronics. And for the prices they charge for these guitars, it's just plain stupid to not show pictures of the electronics or the backs of the pickups. I pity the fool who buys without seeing them first.
I have a 1980 or so les Paul and I think it’s a fake copy, it has perloid block inlays and the “spit diamond” is just a yellow rhombus, my uncle got it 20 years ago and we’re in Texas, the sticker on the neck plate says “red Memphis” and a Texas “serial number”
