My mother's ex-husband's father was stationed in Portuguese India for a while, he ended up being kept in an Indian prison for about six months after the invasion, the upside is that he passed down some local curry recipes to our family.

0:14 Your map of Diu is slightly inaccurate 1. The part to the right that you made an island where Ghogola is, is a peninsula connected to the rest of India. 2. The island's northern borders should be much smoother, the parts you made just water is swampland and most maps count it as part of the island. Including a Portuguese map from 1920

After India achieved independence in 1947, it made claims on Goa in 1948 and 1949, and Portugal came under increasing pressure to cede Goa and its other possessions in the subcontinent to India. In mid-1954, Goan nationalists seized the Portuguese enclaves of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and established a pro-Indian administration. Another crisis occurred in 1955 when satyagrahis (nonviolent resisters) from India attempted to penetrate the territory of Goa. At first the satyagrahis were deported,

What India did to Goa is similar to what China tried to do to Macau around the same time period in 1966, called the 12-3 incident. Basically, there was segregation for education, the Chinese were treated poorly while Portuguese got to go to private schools, and decided to build their own private school as a way to make things fair. The gov gave them the land, stopped it because they didn't receive bribes, but the locals kept building. The police intervened, things got out of hand, and 40 people were injured. Then on December 3rd, a group of revolutionary students protested what was happening, ransacked Portuguese institutions, even looting Chinese businesses that supported the Kuomintang (both the CCP and Kuomintang had a presence in Macau at the time), and a large group of Red Guards gathered at the border. Martial law in Macau was declared, and this resulted in 8 people killed and 212 injured. The PRC responded by deploying 15,000 troops and a couple warships to Macau to prevent the Red Guards from invading (basically saying, "we don't like them too, but leave the invading part to the professionals). Due to pressure from both the PRC AND the Estado Novo in Lisbon (yup, even SALAZAR said "You F'd up"), the colonial government agreed to apologize, accept responsibility, and give de-facto control of Macau to the PRC. This made Ho Yin, the leader of the Chinese community of Macau, the de-facto governor. The colonial gov. also made another agreement with Guandong, where China agreed to take back all refugees who arrived after January 1967 (they kept this promise until 1978)

The then Portuguese dictator Antonio Salazar had suspended civil liberties in Goa , the freedom of press was also suspended , peaceful protestors were not allowed to protest. When Indian army entered Goa they faced nearly no resistance from locals and it was like a cakewalk for them to reach Panjim and unfurl the tricolour . We lost many of our countrymen and did the impossible to get there and establish a bit of our Portugal in the East. But it was done. Kind of feels weird to see India invading a place (even though this particular case is that of decolonization). I felt it would have been much smoother if Portugal simply surrendered Goa to India with a referendum (thus saving their face) without creating an opportunity for an armed intervention.
@gordontaylor2815
@gordontaylor2815 2 года назад
The problem was that Portugal had previously agreed to leave in 1958 and did not seem in any way interested in keeping their end of the deal. Add in the fact that other Portuguese colonies of the time (such as Angola and Mozambique) were starting to rebel, and India simply scented an opportunity to get their way regardless of whatever criticism they got over it (and they got quite a bit of it at the time).

The USSR helped out India at the time by using its UN veto to stop UN action against India. The US and UK condemned India for taking Goa. The USSR helped India again later in the India-Pakistan war by sending nuclear-armed submarines to patrol her coast, scaring away the US and British warships that were on their way to bomb India. The foundations of the current strong relationship between Russia and India was built in those times. Also explains why India really doesn't like being lectured to by the US and the UK.

Several reasons why India annexation of Goa was a success but Indonesia annexation of east Timor would end in failure: Goa was a Portuguese colony of which India had sought to incorporate, Portugal position looked absurd once Britain and France had granted independence to their Indian colonies. After initial violence the situation in Goa was calm. Timor was a Portuguese colony surrounded by former Dutch colony of Indonesia, Portugal granted it independence and soon after Indonesia invaded and it continued to have incessant violence, Indonesia had conquered a sovereign state and embarked on repression hence the important difference

After Indian independence, Goa had a lot of rich native Goans looking for new ways to further increase their wealth, so they took part in an independence movement the general population didn’t bother much about. Their movement had no real effect, as it was so minute and did not reflect the sentiment of most Goans at that time, nonetheless India needed an excuse to invade and this was one. Moreover the Portuguese did not mistreat their natives, As they were pretty calm and even after they left they allowed the Goans to claim for Portuguese passport, which is something they didn’t even have in Brazil where the people speak Portuguese.

LMAO, India basically defeated a NATO member. The answer to your question is because NATO as its' name stands only operates on Sovereign land around the Northern Atlantic Ocean with a few exceptions of Alaska, French Guyana, etc. Also, the USA was pushing for decolonization at the same time.

The USA was pushing for decolonization at the time, so they didn't give a crap about colonial wars, they even supported rebels in other Portuguese colonies
