The Indian Pacific is one of the world's finest train journeys, carrying passengers on a three night, four day excursion, the full 4,352km across Australia between Sydney and Perth. This is a must-take trip for the rail enthusiast, being in the top five longest trains in the world, and traversing the world's longest straight piece of track (478km) on the Trans Australian Railway on the Nullarbor Plain. It's a luxury experience, encompassing several off-train stops and excursions at places of interest along the route.

We've done the Ghan 3 years ago and the service and food where on a par to what you experienced. Seems like you were probably in Perth about the same time as us - we came the short way direct from London on the Qantas flight.

I have both ways in the 80s ! It was absolutely fabulous then & now. Well done :) A great hostel lies just past Platform One at Central Railway; great for a budget night, singles etc available prior to the train or a flight. The Indian never used to go via Adelaide which is such a great city.

Hi there, these noisy creatures are plentiful in South Africa as well! 🤦‍♀️ We have travelled pretty much all of the trains available in South Africa so would love to try this one in Oz to make a comparison. @@User-718_ That's how it is with luxury train cruising in Australia. You'll find a number of Asian people on-board, but that's as many as the number of white people who travel on the super-luxury Shiki-shima train.

I was a Perth based locomotive driver and worked that train for 23 years until my retirement in 2020,it was part of my roster along with the interstate freight trains,my employer Pacific National provided the Locomotives and crews to haul the train on a " hook and pull" basis as Great Southern Railways don't have their own Locomotives or drivers, Pacific National had an agreement, where possible to use Locomotives painted in the GSR livery as about seven were painted in the IP scheme, I never travelled on it as a leisure passenger ,although I did travel on it once travelling back to Perth when it had terminated in Kalgoorlie due to flooding on the Nullarbor plain,I did 43 years as a locomotive driver and loved the job.

How far east of Perth did you run before changing crews? Did you lay over at the crew change point, and drive the west bound train, or were you driven back to Perth?

@@paulsmith3820 When I first started working the IP we would book off in Kalgoorlie on the east bound leg,for a crew change,655 km east of Perth then work a west bound freighter home after our rest period,we would also work the westbound leg from Kalgoorlie back to Perth after working an eastbound freighter and after our rest break,my employer Pacific National then implemented DOO ( driver only operation )so then we would only go as far as West Merredin and book off there after a crew change and that driver would take it through to Kalgoorlie and hand it over to the Kalgoorlie crew who would take it to Cooke in the nullabor for a crew change there,on most occasions we would work a freighter back after our rest period but on some occasions we would drive a car,most of us preferred DOO as the shifts were a lot shorter 5/6 hours as compared to the 12 hour shifts to Kalgoorlie,we would also work the westbound service DOO out of West Merredin to the East Perth Terminal

@@RobertB56 Thanks for your response. I grew up in Altoona, Pennsylvania, which was the home of the heavy works of the Pennsylvania Railroad. All of my friends fathers worked for the railroad; many of them were engineers (drivers) and conductors. My father was an attorney, but 90 percent of his clients were railroaders. As a result, I suspect, I have been a rail enthusiast since Adam was a Boy Scout. I was thinking "Amtrak" drivers; they only run Amtrak trains. I did not consider that you could take the IP one way and then return on a freight or goods train. Australia has lifted many of the pandemic constraints. I will be traveling to your country in September. I can hardly wait; I may just have to ride the IP again. Again, thanks for taking the time to reply to my question.

@@paulsmith3820 Yes I see the Amtrak drivers work exclusively for Amtrak,here the Indian Pacific,The Ghan,which goes Adelaide to Darwin and the,Overland,which goes Adelaide to Melbourne are owned by GSR Great Southern Railways,as I mentioned before they don't own any Locomotives or have train Drivers, they do own all the coaches and provide the on coach staff,my employer had what's called a hook and pull contract to provide Divers and Locomotives to haul it hence why I worked both freight and passenger services, railways have a way of being in your blood and while I enjoyed the job the irregular hours time away from home can be tiring but would I change anything no I wouldn't,thanks for your interest I would like to get to the states one day to have a good look around.

Those airstrips you see randomly are for the Royal Flying Doctors Service. In case a passenger requires immediate treatment they can land next to the train.

Born in Sydney in May 1946. Departed as a 2 month old for the U.S. with my U.S. Army American dad and Aussie mom. I've never returned. Will be visiting in 2024 for 2 months. The Indian Pacific is one of the great adventures on the itinerary. This is just a great video!!!! Thank you so much Paul!!

I took it in 1989 from Perth to Sydney. It was really amazing journey, took 66 hours. I still remember after 30 years.

In 1987 I drove from Perth to sidney, four days it took us. We slept in the car at night and ate under the stars. I use to think London to Coventry was a long way great memories.

I whent on that train Sydney to Perth in early 1990 great fun there was a big flood the train company put us up in a hotel for the night then flew us out to Adelaid then a bus tour of Adelaid on the wat to get the train no extra cost for my $90 ticket.

My wife and I took the Indian Pacific with our daughter in February 1980, from Perth to Brisbane via Adelaide and Melbourne. We'd booked two Austrail passes before arriving in Australia, thinking we'd buy our daughter's ticket as she was coming up to four years old and not knowing the drill, as we had been living and working in Central Africa. When we went to the station the very nice ticket office gentleman asked how old she was . We replied that she was a leap year baby and her first real birthday would be the second day on the train. He smiled broadly and said "In that case, being under one then she travels free of charge." Oh bless you, Austrail. The crew made her birthday a really wonderful time and I recommend the trip to every one.

I’ve crossed the US twice by train - there is such a marvelous sense of you don’t get in a plane. And I quite agree, a leisurely dinner with fellow travelers is usually a highlight. I shall certainly add this journey to my dream list. Oh, love that tiger shirt!

29:30 The markers are not for a pipeline , but are for the "Optical Fibre" I was involved in installing in the late 1980's and 1990"s. The large rocks you can see close to the line are from the "Rip Line" where we used a D11 Bulldoser to carve the trench for the laying of the fibre. Water for Cook is brought in by train.

I did this in 1999 from Sydney to Perth as backpackers in cattle class, what a trip!! We spent more time in the guards van where the smoking room was getting pissed up and stoned with our new train friends! Happy days...

In my whole life living in Sydney, I never thought of the Indian Pacific highly as I just wanted to get to my destination sooner (always flew to Perth). But as I grew older, and watching your other train videos for the last 2.5 years, you've finally convinced me to do this epic train journey. Once this pandemic is over in Australia, I will gladly do this trip! Fantastic and informative video Paul, this is probably your best train video yet!

Great presentation. Thanks for taking the time and sharing. I've lived in Australia for 62 years now; and lived in the Blue Mountains and worked on building Lithgow Hospital extensions when I was a bricklayer in my teens. I'm now thinking of doing a run on this iconic train. Once again thank you, I thoroughly enjoyed.👍 It sits direct in line with our legendary singer, Slim Dusty sang in his song - "The Indian Pacific" a great song sung by a great Australian bushie.

I lived in Perth for three years, at the end of my street was Meltham station, around midday on a Saturday I would often watch the Indian Pacific trundle past on its way to Perth, it seemed to take about 5 mins to pass through, I’m sure the engine would be entering East Perth station while the rear would still be in Mount Lawley station

My parents (from the US) took that train westbound a number of years ago. It was an incredibly memorable experience for them. They talked and talked about it.. They made some good friends (from Perth) on the trip that they still stay in contact with, years later.

As a Yank, I thoroughly enjoyed my two long distance train journeys in Australia. These were the Sunlander (Brisbane - Cairns) and Ghan (Alice Springs - Adelaide). In addition to the chance to see the less developed areas of the country, the highlight was the chance to spend time with both Australians and fellow visitors. No one likes to swap stories over a cold stubbie more than Aussies, at least that I have experienced, and it adds a major new dimension to one's visit.

Those OA's (Outback Airports) are usually just for the Royal Flying Doctors, Rangers, Search and Rescue operations, refueling for cattle runs, supply drops or maintenance to the railway or nearby town and/or mines. They're hardly used but can be really helpful at times.

Not to mention, the major highways themselves also double as runways for the RFDS, which the local Police shut down the highway if needed.

I’ve done this trip 5 times now and I plan on doing it a lot more as I’m not a big fan of flying🤦🏻‍♂️. I was so disappointed when I got to Hahndorf both times that we got there too late in the day and everything was shut as there some pretty awesome looking shops there. And I absolutely loved the Adelaide market part of the trip that was really interesting👌🏻😁🇦🇺🍻 Edit: The only reason the kangaroo tastes good is because its marinated or has its actual flavor covered up with spices and stuff. Kangaroo is definitely not a nice taste in my opinion ,that's why 95% of kangaroo is made into dog food in Australia.

Kangaroo is definitely an acquired taste! But, uh, I do like the ones that were made into sausages... Although I'm pretty sure that's because of the black pepper sauce that I usually eat them with.

You must have filmed this during 2019/2020 summer of bushfires. It was terrible. Constant choking smoke for 2 months and many lives lost. Glad you enjoyed your stay in Australia!

Did this trip from Adelaide to Perth on Boxing Day 2019, brilliant. Car on train and plans to do bucket list drive from Perth to Adelaide but bush fires had other ideas. Got as far as Esperance and had to turn back to Perth and fly home (car sent by train). Bush fires were horrendous, view from the air was bad so how the towns and villages looked must have been a nightmare 😢

I've been across twice and it sure beats flying for class and enjoyment. My trips were in 94 and 97 and I see it has improved. There was cattle class for the poor people who had to sit up for the whole journey. I'd love to do the trip again and if anyone is considering it - DO IT! You won't regret it.

@@eiypo a couple of years ago I was going to visit my dad for Christmas at Tweed heads. There were storms and a tree blocked the tracks just north of Taree. Took about 20 hours to finally get there as we had to be coached to our destinations. That was pretty mundane TBH

I've not ridden the Indian Pacific, but I did drive the 4000+ miles from Perth to Sydney and that was an experience, crossing the Nullarbor Plain, stopping at Balladonia Roadhouse in W.A, before our next stop to Ceduna in S.A. final destination being Adelaide!

I drove from Launceston to Perth in March 1971. The Nullabor section was 300+ miles of goat track with bulldust holes deep enough to lose the car :) It was an epic trip in my EK Holden.

I drove a week before xmas in 1998 and arrived xmas eve in Adelaide! My old 1978 Toyota corona used a lot of oil as the car was old and was burning oil! Total fuel, I didn't actually measure. It was over 20 years ago.

I booked to travel from Sydney to Perth on the Indian Pacific in gold but got off in Adelaide, as I had enough due to poor air conditioning, constant speed restrictions, being shunted into passing loops as freight trains have priority on the Sydney to Adelaide sector, low water pressure in the shower and cramped sleeping compartment. Unlike Paul who traveled in a twin berth, I was placed in a single berth. Despite these problems, the bed was comfy, the meals were great and train crew super friendly. Of the 4 major tourist train journeys excluding the Ghan (Adelaide to Darwin), the best train journey was the Spirit of Queensland between Brisbane and Cairns followed by The Oveland train between Melbourne and Adelaide and The XPT both day time and over night between Sydney and Melbourne and lastly the Indian Pacific train. I hope paul traveled on the Overland and Spirit of Queensland trains.

I worked for the old AN for 13years the last 5 years was on a rail grinder. I worked all the old AN system. In that time I worked over the Trans Line twice took 2 tears each time. A steady trip and rode he Indian Pacific out and back once or twice a month to go to work. Loved being on the plain.

I've always scoffed at our trains such as the Indian Pacific, and the Ghan. Most footage that I've seen present the trip as an antiquing trip full of retirees. Your video is probably the first one that has made me consider doing the trip via train one day. Thank you.

Up your's lad. Ever tried to talk to an oldy, better still have you ever tried to listen. The vast majority who are on these trips is because they lived a full life and now enjoying something special. Ever heard of the Berkeley women, the small group of Brits who were producing code through WW2. I met one who retired in Perth, what a fascinating personal account of how it all worked and what that small group of women contributed to the war effort. Or the 85 year old nuclear physicist who worked in British ordenance I also met in Perth. I asked if he'd ever seen a nuclear bomb go off and his reply " Well have you ever heard of Maralinga?' People work hard all their lives. Many never had the chance nor means for such a journey. Amongst them you will meet some of the most interesting people you will ever meet. But it's good to see more and more young people are reconnecting with their elders, that's a good thing.

@@redhammer9910 The is a universal phenomena. Once we reach middle age and start to see that life is not eternal, that is when Wisdom dwells. Another reason is the struggle to get financially settled. It is getting harder amoung the young. So they have less and less time to actually listen and observe. This age of materialism has its benefits, but we are now seeing the negatives of it too.

That first shop that was in Hahndorf that you filmed was once a gift shop come jewellery and gemstone shop owned and operated by my Parents in the late 80's. We operated it for about 2 years or so. Nice to see that the shelving that were seen from the outside window is still there. Nice to see the main street of Hahndorf again and I have walked down it many a time back when we owned that shop. I used to live in Ceduna in South Australia and have taken the same journey along the Eyre Highway to Perth and there is a stretch of road along the Nullarbor Plain that is 149km long and is dead flat and straight just like the view that you had out of the window. Looks like it was a marvellous trip Paul. I think that I will have to avail myself of the trip like you did. Thanks for sharing such a wonderful video.

Good video which captures the experience well. We have done the Indian-Pacific three times and Ghan once. Every minute was enjoyable. Nothing lulls you to sleep like being on a train.
