Words by Denver artist and 'Rise Sun' video director Laura Goldhamer.
If this motion-picture music video had a storybook moral, it would encourage us to carry forward hope, beyond cerebral logic, even without knowing where the heck we will end up. As humanity contemplates questions of its own fate on this planet as a species (deeply mired in destructive modern industry), amidst it all, we call for hope in a new day. This song begs a huge but hopeful question: “Can we live together without pain?”
As filmmakers, we’ve been affectionately referring to this video piece as “A Portrait of America”, as it traces our various U.S. travels from east coast to the west, through the south & into the southwest. Using photographic approaches we call “photo-flow” & “travel-lapse”, this visual texture embodies the exciting yet often frenetically fast pace of contemporary society. Moreover, the upbeat driving song “Rise Sun” seems to yearn for reconciliation & harmony in our modern complicated time, as violent divisions exist not only between peoples, but between mass cultural human behaviors & the natural world. One timeless symbol of the manufactured industrial (though perhaps too frequently affiliated with bluegrass music) is the train. This coexistence & conflict of industry with wilderness is succinctly contained within a single shot in this video, as a herd of antelope runs behind a line of train cars.
In preparation to launch off to the mountains of Jamestown, CO for one of our movie-making expeditions, we sought out our friend Paul DeHaven’s art to use in conjunction with our own colorful yarn-based animations (all shot outdoors in February!)… Coincidentally, one of the pieces he sent with us very much resembled a sunrise! This woven art piece, to us depicting dawn, became a bit of an unexpected mascot for the song, a symbol of hope in a new day & of carrying this hope through the moments & along sidewalks of our every day lives. Some of this concept was filmed on sidewalks of in both industrial and residential areas of our local Baker neighborhood in Denver. We filmed some segments near train tracks there and were politely asked to leave the area by railroad officials. Other segments were filmed in Jamestown, CO at a yurt, labyrinth, & ravine with abandoned old cars. Other locations include passenger and back seats on trips to and from Taos, NM, Carbondale & Buena Vista, CO, while other moments were captured in such states as Louisiana, Texas, Maryland, & North Carolina.
When on a journey, it is common to worry that we are not going the right way. However some problems can be solved simply by proceeding on the path. Much like walking many circuits of a labyrinth (in which there is actually no wrong turn, but instead a single route), it may feel like you are not getting any closer to where you are trying to go, or even as if you are moving further & further away from your ultimate goals. However, at a certain point, we can trust that every step is indeed one step closer, & when we let go of worry as to whether or not we will ever get there, suddenly we find ourselves at the center. Without knowing each and every step of where this music video would take us, great meaning & surprises aligned as we made our way towards its completion.
The video also includes one time-lapse shot of The Super Blood Wolf Moon on Jan 21st, 2019, freshly emerged with new light from total eclipse. As it turns out, cover artwork for “Rise Sun” also employed a photo of a super moon, a long-exposure which was reworked to look like the light of the sun on the album’s cover.

Hell yeah! I want to tell you guys... You've gotten me through some seriously hard times. Through valleys of depression and suicidal tendencies, you guys were always there. Your music has kept me alive all these years and soon I'll be able to say I made it to 30 years old. Something that if you were to have asked me ten years ago, I would have said "no way". I love y'all so much! Keep playing and I'll keep coming to see you!

@@cjpandolfi Wow, didn't expect a reply. Thanks Chris! Also thought you should know you have been a personal inspiration to me as I have been playing the banjo since 2005. I actually learned how to play a lot of different styles by learning how to play your songs. So you are a huge inspiration. Right up there with Bela Fleck. It really means a lot. Thanks, and much love!

More than likely you will have to fix it out of pocket. A insurance claim may backfire on you and the victim. bertsmobile1 said: 07-22-2019 10:57 PM Re: Help! My son hit a rock with his trimmer, broke car window.... If he wants to continue to do his mowing he will have to get insurance as already stated. Down here it is called public liability. HE might consider this a "cheap" lesson as it is only a van window. If it hit a young woman on the face enough to leave a scar you are talking thousands . As for making a claim on the customers insurance, forget it. As previously mentioned they will come after you for the money + costs and then could jack up the premium of his now lost customer HE will also need to have a look at how he trims to avoid tossing up rocks and might even get a better guard for the trimmer. Lots of after market big guards. My commercial customers use a dedicated edge trimmer for this reason and because they give a cleaner sharper cut, but edge trimmers have a much better guard than a line trimmer turned sideways. I know on the insurance. I knew better, his biz just got bigger than expected, quite quickly and I put off the insurance. He started with a family friend s yard and it took off from there. His Stihl line trimmer has the factory guard on it. I haven't seen any of the lawn service s around here using anything larger than those on their trimmers? Thanks for the help guys. This is such an awesome song. As more of a bluegrass purist, I was a little put off from what I heard on the radio from Infamous Stringdusters. Then I heard this song and now I'm warming up to them very well!

OMG! The thumbnail image of your video reminds of Japanese WWII criminal flag named Rising Sun which looks very similar to yours. I am so disappointed with your video.
