The Infestation of Bots and Misleading Ads Online 

It wont be long until we get ads with an AI Hockey Guy trying to get us to buy knockoff jerseys.

My big beef with all these crappy ads (I only really use RU-vid and Reddit, where they’re not as bad but still deceptive, as you call them) is not that I have to see them, block them, or report them. Whatever. It’s the fact that there is a portion of the population, usually children and older folks who don’t know better, that WILL fall for those scams. These pieces of human garbage actually target the vulnerable for their own profit. It’s disgusting.

I don't twitter anymore and am glad to see it's value tumbling.

What a blast to the past with those "forward this email to 10 of your contacts and something amazing will happen 🎉🎁🎉" chains XD

4 or 5 years ago i actually used to get relevant ads that i would sometimes purchase... now i get nothing but absolute garbage!

Thank you for covering this. I hate bots and fake accounts because they make connecting with a real audience SO time consuming and hard, especially as an artist, writer, comic maker , animator, or lifestylr content creator even. Its exhausting and terrible. I only want to spend my limited mortal time on real human souls.

The worst are the Twitter games that are asking a cute way for you to tell what your date of birth is or your birth city or other personal info.

Back in the day, I ran a website for a farmers market. Being that we had a contact-us page, we would get the spam emails. I found that when I put a comment section early in the code that had the email address for the state attorney generals office (and it did not show on the page), I found the spam count dropped. But that was my experience.

Those scam calls we watched the movie the beekeeper with Jason Statham and it's basically describes and shows exactly how those scam calls are done and the damage that can be done and talk about eye opening that these scams are making multi millions of dollars preying on people it's just nuts

On Twitter, I basically assume most that the blue checkmarks are scammers and bots. And it's crazy how scammy the ads have gotten. I mean, if I owned a legitimate company, I wouldn't even want to be associated with that site BECAUSE of who they sell ads to.

It's the Facebook spam, too. With the van that can't be sold because it's got a few scratches on it. Also, live stream sports events. When I know the game isn't being streamed

The actual video ads that RU-vid runs annoy me. It's always some guy that used to work for big "WHATEVER" and he got so fed up with how Big "WHATEVER" were ripping people off that he started his own business. It's that, US Navy SEAL abdomenisors and some vegetable that will shrink your prostate overnight. My fav was the doctor who used to work at "JOE" Hopkins university 😂

I do get a kick out of the butt bots that don't match the tone, watch a short thg video and the comment is talking about the dynamic action and high production cinematography.

The dating app bots are honestly the most terrifying to me because they can be soooo real at first. I'm so glad I don't have to deal with those anymore.

Glad to hear you addressing this issue. Everyone with a platform should do the same. Especially calling out those that prey on the most vulnerable. I had not heard the term Butt Bot, but now it will never be forgotten. Based on your description of Twitter, I am so glad I never go onto it. Somehow I've been successful with Facebook that I no longer get ads (such as the 95% off TV from the big box store or the 80% off postage stamps). Instead every 3rd or 4th post is a suggestion that I join some FB group page.

The bots are EVERYWHERE! Literally every channel I’m subscribed to on RU-vid has bots commenting on every video I watch.

The rise of dark patterns is something that genuinely threatens the cohesiveness of our society because it destroys the idea that images and video can be trusted at all and how do you communicate using the internet when you’re not sure if you’re anywhere near a real person.

i think my favourite of the ai ads are the weight loss plan ones and it’s these inhumanly buff dudes and their holding a piece of broccoli or something similar in their arms. always gives me a chuckle

This is why I don’t use social media at all it’s loaded with crap and garbage. I use You Tube that’s about it and even You Tube can be annoying at times.

I make comments on Twitter about music or sports. I get likes & more often then not it’s some young lady asking if I like her. My first thought is usually something like: I don’t think this woman really cares about Mike Bossy’s legacy.

RU-vid could end this by just banning links in comments. It would be too easy. Also, scam are a game of dumb and dumber. Dumb for them to try and dumber for those who get caught.

It's a bad thing on TikTok as well, as well as the comments that are just random sayings to try and sound relevant.

14:30 Cancelled my Twitter account a few months back (just before it was renamed). Honestly, I don't miss it. Wikipedia news has me covered on the "news" bit of things. RU-vid has me covered on the data/tech side of things. Twitch has me covered on social side of things. Never was interested in TikTok. Nuked Instagram even before Twitter. Deleted my Facebook account a long time before COVID. Things have been pretty chill. 😊🧡💛🧡

I've seen full nudity in 'ads' on facebook, especially marketplace. They will ban a regular user for posting such imagery, but if you pay them for the privelege...

I feel bad for creators that rely on ad revenue, but the internet has become unusable w/o an ad blocker

There was a whole slough of porn ads spammed to a bunch of Facebook pages last week. I turned them in and Facebook REFUSED to remove them. I blocked them, but really, FB doesn't give a crap about their users. I need FB for my podcast and to keep track of friends and family or I wouldn't be there. It's ridiculous.

I reported a few "actual porn" bots that showed up on my facebook page last week... and Facebook was nice enough to respond saying that the reported ads did not violate any of their marketing terms so.... there's that...

I recieved 9 scam calls in one day and each time they called 3 times consecutively....easy to say I blocked the number lmao

When I see the "butt bot" comments, I report them as "unwanted commercial content or spam." Does this accomplish anything? Everything about cryptocurrencies reminds me of the super-villain's "take over the world" plan in a cheesy action movie.

I am an AI Bot that keeps watching the MN Wild under the illusion that they have a chance at a playoff spot. I will give the next 10 teams that lose to the Wild a Like and a “thank you”.

You think how amazing AI is that they can make such closely realistic video. But at the same time is not being used to block the obvious crap posts. Hmm... These companies could prevent these posts from ever showing up, but they just don't.

You see a lot of "news" channels on RU-vid now that are 100% AI. Many seem to be monetized and it's basically a way for lazy college kids to make a lot of money doing next to nothing. if only I'd been born 2 years before, I wouldn't be stuck in this generation. It's embarrassing. Technology can be a great thing, when used correctly. It can fight diseases that used to take people out quickly, it can help us better communicate with each other...or it can make us incredibly lazy, arrogant and useless to ourselves and each other. As soon as I hear that AI voice, I click off the video. I don't want anyone getting full views from me when they're messing around. The lying about products thing is a whole other area of annoyance. On Facebook, people will just randomly add you and if you don't check their profile, they end up sending you instant messages until the end of time trying to direct you to a website where you'll either get a virus, have to buy something you don't want or both. It's stuff like this that makes me wish we could clone George Carlin. Bring him back to comment on this stuff and make sense of it. And no, I don't mean AI George Carlin. I'm not getting into that discussion again.

Hate ones where you can tell Ai is reading a script to sound like someone & have an interview with the person they want to sound like, but the lip-syncing is so off even a blind person can see it.

We are in the rapid growth stage of something called the "Dead Internet" where people are no longer involved in the creation of the content, major sites just become bots talking to bots on videos made by bots. Actual people will cluster more and more in private groups, much like the early days of the internet, invite only forums and such.

Imagine all these ads/bots for people that use Neuralink in the future
