Swifties rejoice! Taylor is back and better than ever.
Taylor Swift has been in the center of the music industry for the better part of a decade at this point, but her success on tour this year practically cements her position as one of the most (if not the absolute most) popular entertainer in the country and possibly the world.
And if she came to your city, you couldn't miss it. Her tour was responsible for contributing millions dollars to local economies, not to mention the $55 million in bonuses that she gifted to her tour crew.
How does a tour this massive operate?
How much does it cost to put on the biggest tour of all time?
Greyson and Whitney answer those questions and explore the massive success and insane logistics of Taylor Swift's Eras Tour in this week's episode of Shifting Gears!

Yes, I have a question. The answer might be really obvious, but here goes anyway. How do they get 90 trucks overseas and bouncing from country to country that are not connected land masses like the US?

Do they fly the stage in from different countries or is there a local vendor? What is the customs process, do you need two stages to account for extra time?

Strange. I live in Amsterdam, and watch just about everything that goes on in world via my laptop, having surfed all all over the place daily since 2005, watching news and just about anything else from many different international outlets, but had never even heard of Taylor Swift until now. Never even seen her name or picture before. Not in Dutch, English, or Spanish. (Languages I speak.) Maybe my ad-blocker has something to do with it. I don't want to see adds. So I would not see adds for her shows for example. Her fame some say is as that of the Beatles, or even greater. But in the days of the Fab Four it was impossible not to know about them. Same with Michael Jackson: impossible not to know about his existence. But "Taylor Swift? Who's that?" most people outside of the US would ask hearing her name. I'm not making this up. This really surprise me that I had never heard of her before until now while she is so well known in the US by a good amount of people. I saw a raving article on her in TIME today and looked up her name on RU-vid. Her songs sound OK to me. I get the impression her fame is somehow due to a collective mesmerizing effect... like a sort of hypnosis. She looks very good, and has a lovely, generous character. I believe the love in her is what attracts so many souls. Even if it's a subconscious attraction. Love is What we really are, and while we are not consciously aware of that fact, we miss it and long for it. And feel attracted to someone who manifests it, like she does. One thing about the US (and I lived in the States and loved it for some 9 years) people in America believe it is the whole world, even calling sport events that only take place in the US "World Championship." Like football for example. Instead of "North American Championship." Obama called America "exceptional." That is only possible because most Americans know little or nothing about the rest of the world, nor have a very biased impression of it, not having spend much time visiting, let alone living, in other counties. All they know is what the MSM are telling them. Of course there are exceptions. But Taylor Swift is not really famous in the EU for example. Known only in a few countries by some people. See this article on Quora: "Why isn’t Taylor Swift a big star in Europe?" In this world everything is relative... 🙂

I want to give another shout out to Taylor's road crew. We saw her in Philly. After the show our car didn't start. 3 hours after the concert ended we were still stuck in the parking lot. 3 of her road crew members (truck drivers) were leaving the stadium area and saw us. They worked on our car and Stayed with us for 45 minutes until it was running again. They shared stories of their time working for Taylor and driving for other performers. Thanks again to those 3 drivers.

I’m a 72 year old gentleman that has seen Elvis early in his career when young girls freaked out every time he was in public. I experienced the Beatles’s invasion of America and saw them on the Ed Sullivan show… their very first appearance in America. I saw every act in the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s up until today. There’s never been an act that could completely rock Los Angeles, California for a solid week! All of the hotels were full at twice their normal prices. It was difficult to get Uber/Lyft drivers and there was surge pricing all week. Traffic in all of Los Angeles was gridlocked for days. There 70,000 people in SoFi Stadium for 6 straight nights AND there were 10,000 people standing in the parking lot listening to the concert… there no roof on SoFi Stadium so you hear it loud and clear. Taylor Swift is the most popular act I’ve witness in my 72 years on planet Earth!!!

I'm 73 and I concur. I've seen all the greats in rock 'n' roll and no one exceeded Taylor for the combination of songwriting and performing genius. There's no question that she is already on the same exclusive stratospheric level as the Beatles, Stones, Elvis, Michael Jackson and Elton John. I say at least, but I feel that she has surpassed most or all of them. So far no drug issues or personality problems to undermine her success. If she continues to write and perform, she will be the single greatest music star in history. p.s. Her personality is top level. What a role model for women and all of us (I'm a male). She is sweet, considerate, generous, loving, open minded, a fine leader and probably a genius. I honestly regret that I won't be here to see her entire future unfold.

She didn’t use Dynamic Pricing. They were $50-$450 non-VIP packages. VIP packages were about was at most $900. What drove the prices even higher were the fees on top of fees. Then the secondary market happened. I got my VIP ticket at face value for $600. All it included was a VIP care package and a seat right behind the tent where her parents watched the show from. Absolutely no regrets.

We got a presale code for one of her early concerts and got tickets for $250. Ticketmaster did NOT indicate anywhere what the fees would be. We paid, and Ticketmaster added $100 PER TICKET! It’s Ticketmaster and the resellers who are ripping everyone off. My daughter’s friend got tickets from Taylor’s presale the other day. $230 each total including fees, and the seats were better than our earlier tickets. It’s really a mess. I wish the artists would be able to have their own website and sell their own tickets and resale can only go through that site with original, face value only.

When you see how much work goes into putting everything together on time, you kinda of feel the weight of pressure on the artist who can't afford to be sick. There was some artists that just had to cancel like The Weeknd cut the show early because he was sick, Lady Gaga couldn't finish her tour and the ripple effect of lost money to every pocket and the fruatration of dancers who took time to learn the moves. When I heard Taylor was doing 6 nights in a row in L.A. that was some beast mode professionalism. I went to Britney Spears Las Vegas residency and her show was all the hits of her career and Taylor had the same tour but longer and different cities.

Hi! Im a lighting designer who works these kind of large scale events. I also went to and worked The Eras Tour when it came to Philly. In her previous tours (Rep & 1989), she toured with TWO stages, mostly just the steel and everything needed for the stage, with some lighting and video. The performance dates were much closer so logistically it made sense for a crew to be pre building the stage while she was performing that night in another city. Day of show or day before we call that "production load in" where the major bells and whistles show up for load in. Since the Eras tour was only on weekends (ignore LA), she only needed to tour with one package. And a show of this size, money wise, it only made sense if she did multiple days in the same city. We started building her stage on Tuesday, with the production loading in on Thursday. The lighting people need the overnight before the show to set the moving lights since each stadium is different. I loved this video! My father was a truck driver for Landstar for 15 years, so it was nice to see your point of view.

Does Elon run a company of one? If so, sure, then they are entitled to all of the earnings. However, they don't. Their success is supported over and over by a team of talented individuals, whose contributions lead to that success and profit--and it deserves to be properly recognised and compensated. Many of the crew on Taylor's team take on a very strenuous and difficult role, on top of also having them make many personal sacrifices, such as not seeing their loved ones for months. This is a big ask from Taylor and I respect her as a CEO and leader that she sufficiently rewards her staff for the efforts they make. (How much do you earn weekly? The transportation company for this tour, Shomotion, confirmed there is only one full stage for this tour. Her last tour, the reputation tour, had two full copies of the stage. I do think logistically this tour is very well planned out and VERY efficient. Instead of having 1-2 shows in many different cities, they have 2-6 shows in fewer cities. Meaning the stage doesn’t have to be put up and taken down as many times. Also, most of the shows take place on the weekends so they have a 3-4 day stretch to transport and set up the stage in the next city. Hey everyone! Quick note on the ticket prices: The $400 "cheapest" tickets we referred to are primarily the ones sold on the secondary market and from resellers. Taylor Swift did not use dynamic pricing for the Eras Tour, so face value tickets were much cheaper than resale. Hope that clears it up! That being said, what are some of the most expensive prices you saw (or even paid) to see Taylor this year? Let us know!
@k53847
@k53847 9 месяцев назад
I know multiple people who paid vic $2500 in the secondary market. Which is absurd, but they don't regret it. The floor VIP packages at a thousand plus were too pricy for me. But if you got the tickets from ticketmaster etc witht the VIP the cheapest were about $100, floor was about 300. Front rows on floor were about $500.

I got the presale and paid $120 a pop for nosebleeds in NJ at MetLife Stadium. I consider myself lucky. Actually given the price I think it was a great value. 3.5 hours of her performing, plus the openers? It was an experience.

I was watching ticket prices in California, hoping to be able to find a friend with a verified fan account for Los Angeles in order to buy face-value tickets when they added inventory after setting up the stags. SoFi stadium has large sections of built-in standing room that they added and sold 2 nights before the first show there. These, as well as obstructed seats that were essentially behind the stage, were sold for between $49-$69, and there were over 3K tickets of those sold per night during that inventory drop. Even though that drop was not dominated by bots, many of these tickets hit the secondary market. During the show week, some of these tickets were selling for $800 on the regular. Absolutely nuts. (I sadly did not luck out into finding a face value ticket at any price point for SoFi, but I did have success, thanks to my cousin, in buying during the onsale for her return in 2024).

Just a tip: it's way more authentic and understandable to say "we were wrong in our research, there were cheaper tickets priced xyz." because they way you said it left no room for "we meant only the resell prices", you specifically said "the absolute cheapest tickets in the cheapest city". It's okay to be wrong

Gen Xer here…I miss the days of walking into a record store and buying tickets right then and there. Before the Ticketmaster takeover. I wanted to take my 2 teenage daughters to an Eras show but couldn’t score tickets on Ticketmaster and couldn’t bring myself to pay $1000 per ticket for nosebleeds with obstructed view. I regret not being able to give my girls an epic memory. But at the end of the day…I couldn’t bring myself to pay the price. But…if Taylor brings this tour back to the West Coast, I will move heaven and Earth to take my girls to see her.

I have personally posted about how overwhelming Taylor’s logistics had to be, especially right after Yellow shut its doors. I had been saying Taylor should buy Yellow’s fleet and create an entire concert support company because she clearly knows how to move major systems. She should tackle Ticketmaster next - I am certain she can redesign how tickets and proceeds are handled o everyone who SHOULD get a cut does get a cut.

@Bill_N_ATX 8 месяцев назад
International tours are tough. Europe will be very similar to the US. Lots of trucks but will cost more to move because of laws, rules, etc. it will be interesting to see what flies to Asia, Australia, and South America. 747s aren’t cheap, although they aren’t what they were during the Pandemic when anything that could fly was commanding top dollar. But her tour will rival a F1 race for travel. The stage and such came from Tate Towers, a large staging company, who has offices around the world. So they may have some of the equipment already in some locations. But they are still going to have to ship a lot of stuff. As an aside, in 2016, the band Iron Maiden used a specially painted 747-400 to transport their band, crew, and tons of equipment on their world tour. The bands lead singer is actually a licensed 747 pilot and he flew the plane, named Ed Force One, after the bands mascot. It was a huge tour at the time.

As someone who works in touring, the biggest show I've worked on was 200 trucks, so the scale gets a lot bigger than this. It's also very common for large stadium tours to have 3 sets of steel work for the stage leapfrogging each other, but things like wardobe and instuments are used on each show.

It’s a mess, and I wish the artists were able to make their own websites with ticket sales, and resale would have to be through their website, with only original face value allowed for resale

They technically cannot sale their own tickets even if they really wanted to. LiveNation owns most if not all the concert venues and they pretty much require that the artist would use TicketMaster as their ticketing system or otherwise they wouldn't be able to play in that venue.

Most artists make a lot less than people think while the Record Company rakes in the cash to make a plush life for one or a few people. The 2 stages to allow time to set up is something I had heard of before because that’s how the Hamilton Broadway Touring Companies work, because they travel with not just a set but the full rotating stage! So when I heard that was how Eras worked, I thought OF COURSE! I had heard she travelled with upwards of 250 people on the crew working the tour, it’s far far more than any touring theatrical production, which I love to hear about the logistics of. When I read that number, I thought of all the analogues to theatre that must be on a big tour like this: stage managers, dressers and wardrobe personnel, audio engineers, electricians and lighting techs, stage carpenters, what a cool gig to work! Maybe company medics or PTs? The dancers probably have swings? How do they hire, through a staffing company? It’s just incredible. I would absolutely love to work a massive, challenging gig like this one day if the working environment was healthy and supportive!

If you want to get to know Taylor's catalogue, I would recommend starting with folklore and evermore, and then try if you like Lover and reputation. You probably know a lot of midnights already as it's on the radio at the moment, but maybe look into the deluxe tracks of that album (called "3am edition"). And then there's Red, which you will probably like if you've liked folklore and evermore before. Taylor Swift isn't only Blank Space and You Belong With Me :D

This was not a leap frogging tour because there were several nights in between stops. There were around 80 to 85 trucks total with around 60 trucks devoted to production and the remaining 20 or so devoted to the steel stage scaffolding. The production trucks don't have to arrive until a day or two before the show and the crews work very fast. It's the steel and sound towers construction which are time consuming and cumbersome. It's usually this part that tends to be leapfrogged on tours. Crews are used to setting up the production side of things ( sound, lighting, video, artists runways) fast and you see it for arena shows. It's when a stage scaffolding structure at large roofless stadiums have to be built that things get more complex. Beyonce's recent tour has dates separated by a few days so there are three advance leapfrogging steel teams.

Big tours like this tend to have two sets of "steel"... The big supporting substructure that everything is built on. That is what Taylor has two of that leapfrog each other. That takes quite a bit of time to build, and often involves substantial cranes and other "big construction" sort of tasks. Most all of the technical stuff, the LED walls, the lights, the speakers, the band equipment and the like only has a single set that goes to each show, and does most of it's setup in a single day. There are several videos where you can see a timelapse of the setup, but all start with that basic steel stage structure already built. Tours have, of course, figured out how to do this setup and teardown very quickly, especially if they already have a known steel structure to build off of. Additionally, when doing stadium tours like this, a performer has to carry that steel as they don't have a roof that they can hang stuff from like they do in an arena or smaller venue.

For her international leg of the tour, Singapore, her concert paired up with our Singapore Tourism Board, releasing tickets along with hotel packages to boost the hotel business here. And because it's the one and only stop in Southeast Asia, a lot of the neighbouring country Swifties has to travel to Singapore to watch. I live here and was lucky enough to get tickets to her show here. Thankfully I don't need to spend on flight tickets like others. The hotels and flight tickets have increased more than triple ever since she released her show dates.. there's also a ton of people flying in even though they don't have a ticket, they just want to sit in the carpark and listen to it from the outside. She's not even here for her tour and I'm already seeing the economy impact she has on Singapore. The craft stores that sells beads, has picked up business by a lot more since Swifties are known to make friendship bracelets for exchange at shows. I can't wait to see even more bigger numbers and impact from her.

I've long wondered how concert tours can do so many cities, have the stage setup & taken down, the transportation time, and the only way it can be done is a army of people from technicians to truckers, moving two identical stages & costumes & props, and they leapfrog so while one is being used, the other is moving to the next city & setup. I don't see any other way. I think Swift has a in house tour design & logistic team. I don't even know how the international tour works.

To be fair, most big touring acts do have multiple stages. The one I know most about for example, Bon Jovi, seemed to have at least 3 stages on the road in Europe throughout their 2011 stadium tour. Each had a different cover over the actual stage rigging. One of them was black and red, the second was black and grey and the final one was all black. Though their stage was no where near as complex as the one's Taylor seems to prefer. They are a more traditional rock band who doesn't have a super complex stage where they need to be at a certain location for every song every night. Taylor seems to have pretty rigid setlists where as Bon Jovi are usually more flexible. When I saw Bon Jovi in 2022 Jon Bon Jovi started the show singing in the crowd, which is something he can do with the simpler stages and tours. It would almost be a shame for someone like Taylor to do that since presumably it would break up the way she had set up her show and she may not get to use the interesting and intricate additions on her stage. All this to say, I find the logistics of touring and designing a stage very interesting.

The ticket prices also depend on the city And stadium. In my city and stadium the face value ticket prices for lower bowl were higher than Midwest shows. Still glad she didn’t do dynamic pricing, but wish the prices were standard across all shows no matter the location. I had obstructed view, and would’ve paid much more for full view but there were barely any tickets left at that point, but still better than resale😅
