He's very rich but has lost his reputation. Michael Kors is now considered tacky. Something the lower classes buy thinking they're hip. His story reminds me of Pierre Cardin who was highly regarded in the 60's and then cheapened his brand by licensing his name. He became extremely wealthy as a result but his name was forever tarnished.
@YoBoyMarcus I guess it depends on what your priorities are. Not to mention these days people's mindset is being changed regarding luxury and the concept of cheap. Things aren't the same as they used to be. All sorts of people still wear his clothes. The concept of cheap people etc. Is now seen as elitist and negative...not really something to aspire to.
I noted in watching this "downfall" story that the griping was never about the quality or design of the clothing once he branched out to more mainstream retailers. It was about perceived exclusivity and unattainable-ness of his products. In my mind if more people can afford his products and improve their appearance what's wrong with that? It's when the snobs and elitists feel what they wear can be purchased by a greater number of people, they're no longer interested. So that's what we've come to these days? Our values are messed up.
I could not have said this any better and they depend on everyday people to buy it along with the rich people a bunch of snobs. But when they need someone to clean their homes or be a surrogatevwhere do they go to poor and everyday people
So because regular hard-working people can now afford Michael Kors they’re saying that diminish from the luxury brand that it is man. People are just so selfish.
Why do you think prices for luxury goods are so high that is because they don't want ordinary people have what they have I mean rich people. This applies to everything hotels, restaurant, etc. They increase prices on purpose so we ordinary people can't afford
Interesting what one considers a “downfall” he’s a strategic businessman who I’m sure has lost no sleep. He still makes millions while he sleeps and others discuss his success through their lenses 🤣🤣🤣
I think they miss the originality of his designs. Once I saw him at all hours selling at QVC I felt bad. Those clothes are great, but they're not what MK used to stand for. The quality of materials, design n workmanship are lost. Go into a thrift store sometime n if you see an MK product you'll see the diff. I don't doubt he's a strong survivor, but it's hard to see him on that stool at midnight on QVC. (IMO n I shop at Walmart so no "ego" here :-)
Some of you sound out of touch there was a time when people would avoid cheapness and such but society has changed and people aren't in awe of the rich elite psychopaths anymore...in fact many in the so called upper crust unbeknownst to many are wearing fake hermes and such delights. And poorer people aren't hero worshipping the upper-class like they used to...social media has destroyed the superstar and the royals...it is a new day and michael kors will survive over many and their so called prestige and good name, as that's all some of those have. The brand catching the most heat in the fash8on world right is Chanel with their high pricing and declining quality. MK mainly git hurt due to the copy industry not really because of brand rep.
@@MYTHOUGHTS46 that’s laughable, it’s ALWAYS about the money for big business, that’s 101 PROFIT. The point is as a businessman you pivot, adjust, and meet the market demands..he has not missed a beat!
Well we need designers that cater to women who love well made clothes for work and evening. Let rich women access the big fashion houses and pay thousands for an outfit. As for me, I'm thankful for artful design and affordable luxury.
I have one I bought almost 20 years ago. It was garbage. It had a snakeskin print that rubbed off as soon as anything touched it. I never bought anything of his again.
As someone who works in fashion retail, I have noticed the shoe line went from leather upper balance manmade to all manmade. Tanner Leatherstein did a tear down of a phone bag and noticed the leather was cheap quality.
I had my MK tote repaired.. it was thin leather lined with a fabric, not 100% leather as advertised…he lost me … I never bought anything else from him..
Yep, quality suffer as soon as it becomes mass. Quality materials are limited and they are expensive to begin with. Now add to it design, labor and distribution and they have to cut corners and save on something to keep it at affordable price point. So quality goes down the drain and things are simply cheap shit.
Sell to the classes, live with the masses. Sell to the masses, live with the classes. I enjoy my MK bags. But then again would rather travel than spend thousands of dollars on a handbag that was assembled in a sweat shop and have the hardware added in Italy.
People want to pretend this brands make the bags with healthy artesans working one bag at the time in an atelier with dainty lights and beautiful Windows.... 😂😂😂😂😂 All this billoinares use slave labor, is has been proven AGAIN and AGAIN the horrible conditions inmigrants work the leather Even loosing limbs .... And them sold 750 times the PRICE they make it
I met him 23 years ago when he made an appearance at Saks fifth Avenue in Boca Raton, Florida. Without knowing who I was, he went up to my 11-year-old daughter and was so friendly to her and so sweet. I think he’s one of the nicest people.❤
Perry Ellis died tragically years and years ago. He had little to say about the direction his name-brand took after his demise. That's such a shame isn't it?
@@mangos2888 High quality fabric and craftsmanship cost more money. That is not available to everyone. You don't sell pure wool or silk at the same price as polyester. Expert sewing costs more than sewing from a sweatshop. There are plenty of brands that do this. The problem is that people often equate a brand name with quality.
I agree. I’ve always, always, wondered why overly branded items weren’t the cheapest in the collection, after all the buyer/wearer is a walking advertisement for the brand
There’s actually 3 brands under his name. Michael Kors Collection which has an extremely loyal following and are his original designs. Michael Michael Kors which is what this video is about, accessible luxury. The last is the outlet.
So agree. I thought the quality was horrible and he overdid the same designs over and over just changing the material. So over a zipper part of the design too.
Theres Michael Kors Collection and then there’s MK. Handbags in the collection can go for up to $3K and I have 2 handbags from that line that I still enjoy. As for apparel, it’s similar to DKNY and Donna Karen and even Ralph Lauren and RL. Saks and Neumann sell Kors Collection
MK will last forever, he gave the world what it wanted. People didn't have to go through their lives just dreaming of having luxury, they could actually experience it.
He should rebrand his luxury line with a new label that's fresh, confident, and distant from his past errors, but also acknowledging of the fact that mistakes were made. He could call it "Of Kors", which not only sounds like "of course," but also "off course" onto a new path where "Of Kors" or OK replaces MK. Because he'll be OK. Food for thought. :)
I own a few Michael Kors handbags but stopped buying more 3 years ago. U started buying great quality handmade leather bags made in the US called Go Forth Goods.
Most of those were counterfeit. He needed to hire the team that Calvin Klein employed. If you sold Calvin Klein and you had didn't have authorization he would chase you down to the ends of the Earth and sue you to the point that you would be living out of the trunk of your car. If you have the audacity to sell counterfeit goods he also if you have the audacity to sell counterfeit goods he have the federal government come after them as well. He was notorious for going after Costco who was selling some Calvin Klein jeans 1 time. Not only did he sue Costco. It was to find out how they got hold of the denim in the first place!!. They were probably stolen off the back of a truck most likely. In any event he went after & prosecuted every single person involved. Costco was forced to make a public apology. That's how ruthless you have to be in protecting your brand and your merchandise. Unfortunately the fashion world is full of cheap counterfeit knockoff goods..
What is "luxury" anyway these days? $50 to make a Dior purse - a brand which is like all other "luxury" brands these days now ...compromising quality, and customer service and having no issue making people line up like sheep outside of their stores....Why would anyone with any common sense take these brands such seriously anymore anyway? As for MK where he's at now? Well... I love Michael Kors. Excellent quality and customer service from my exposure to in-store and online purchases and services. I like being able to purchase a creative, beautiful and well-made handbag, dress or shoes without having to take out a second mortgage. I appreciate the accessibility. To him, I say thank you! We forget that historically luxury brands catered to the extreme minority groups with massive wealth. Let them continue ...if they want to pay 10G for a $50 bag that's their business. Also I didn't hear Versace cry their eyes out when MK offered them the deal?
I have a Prada purse I bought in Vietnam for $50.00 bucks . I know it’s fake but who cares . Wearing designer clothes and accessory’s does not guarantees you a longer live.
He should minimize logo and make it hidden inside of bag or garment. Trust me this will help. His products are wearable. Just hide that logo . When logo is embarrassing, hiding , so only owner will know , can help. The virtue of modesty this time is advised.
Props to Michael Kors for making his products accesibles to the middle class and not ripping off his clients like Dior with their $70 dollar bags sold x1000 or Balenciaga and their disgusting marketing 😊😊
I used to sell handbags at Nordstrom. We had a few actual Michael Kors bags. The Karens would get angry over our charging 800.00 for Michael Kors. They were clueless.
I have always loved MK’s fashion. In my eyes, MK provides the best wardrobe basics & classics for every season. Not to mention, MK’s leather items can last at least 20 years if you take care of item.
The leather is trash. I remember years ago I saved for a MK saffiano leather tote bag. I finally got it and treated it like gold- the bottom corners wore off and the straps fell apart so fast!! It had never been set on a floor! I had been using it for maybe a year? That’s when I realized it was probably made in China with very cheap quality and a brand slapped on it but sold for top dollar at Macy’s. I was done. Never again. Quality leather goods if cared for should last a lifetime!
My problem with MK is that the qualitu began to drop. My old MK bags still hold their own, but the new ones fall apart right away. If i want a bag that falls apart, I'll buy a $20 bag at target and not a $200 MK bag.
This is exactly what happened to Coach. The problem is, say what you will, but them outlets are cash cows and brand have to ask themselves what they really want to be. Some brands can afford to be exclusive and some can't. If you want untethered growth, you usually can't.
And yet, Coach’s leather quality ( not the outlet) is top tier. Ppl have let themselves be brainwashed by “ exclusivity”. Paying exclusive prices for sub-par quality.
I’ve read a few comments about the quality of the brand. But, I have seen the quality of quite a few “luxury “ brands go down over the last 20 years. The only difference is that they don’t sell their goods in outlets, so they get to keep their reputations and claims of exclusivity.
I always thought his handbags looked cheap, too. And -- for the most part -- I found his clothing to be very vanilla. I never understood the popularity of his lines. It surprises me that people refer to MK as a luxury brand.
He needs to get rid of the practice of putting his initials MK on everything and everywhere. LV started to look dated with their logo but they're LV and MK is not there yet.
If I were him I would take that MK off of everything but the tag inside 😂 Even if I see a handbag I like/would consider purchasing I can’t get past the logo!
The issue is that MK always discounted certain products and believes in a SALE😮😮😮”Luxury brands”are NOT allowed to do that. It “stains” their high- end status MK is just fine with me!!!👍🏼👍🏾👍💋❤️♥️😺
Quality, quality, quality. Same with Diane Von Furstenberg’s collaboration with Target. Her iconic wrap dress she is selling is made of the cheapest material. This is an insult to your customers and shows your greed & contempt.
Michael Kors never was and never will be luxury. Have you seen the price points? Every bag, is a rip off on luxury bags. Only point, where the brand does well, is in outlet centres, here it’s one of the best selling brand, but that’s all it is! I laugh in the face of calling Michael kors high end or luxury😂
According to rich people, making the luxury goods affordable is downfall?! They can't stand when an ordinary person carries or wears them as they are not "unique" anymore! Poor rich people! 🙂
Because you are carrying a $300 MK bag, does not mean you are wearing a "luxury" good. These are marketed and made specifically to the lower end of the market ..... Poor quality for the price ..... But implying something it isn't. It is actually better to buy a £400 well made leather handbag from one of the small artisan companies based in London, Rome, Paris if you are looking for a bag that can be used daily and last for years.
@@alexandrasmith7682poor quality? I have several MK bags, and they still look great after many years of wear. It goes the other way around, if something is very expensive it doesn’t mean it is a great quality. It means that the snobs will buy it so others can see they can.
Yes- just like other designers you end up at TJ Maxx and Marshall’s. Keep your name intact. Honor yourself to who you are and the beautiful talent you created. Leave it be! Money is not everything. We only understand as we all grow older.
Watching this informative video with my MK glasses purchased at Costco. I exclusively use and purchase MK handbags, as I now have 10, and also own accessories and a few clothing pieces, so this retired school teacher loves his brand. With that being said, reducing his footprint in outlet stores and moving back to the "luxury market only" will still have the average person shopping to locate and purchase a MK item regardless.
What downfall? He oversold, over expanded and went downmarket. THAT downfall? Worst design decision was placing a HUGE “MK” on his products. No thanks.
Because regular folk can purchase Michael kors, that makes him unsuccessful?? That’s pretty funny. Yes, I think he spread himself too thin, but he’s still making bank, I’m sure he’s not loosing any sleep.
Personally don’t believe MK ever had an original idea of his own. Too often he seemed to copy other designers especially with his bags, Gucci, Prada and LV. Just not original and incredibly smitten with himself. I remember one Project Runway episode where the up and coming designers went to MK’s studio. He was showing them pics of a woman that wore African style clothing and told them that was the inspiration for his new line and what it was going to be based on. I bought a friend of mine a $1,200 MK’s bag. One of the two handles broke twice and had to be sent back to NY to be repaired. The store said they would not repair if it happened a third time. This all happened in a matter of 5 weeks including time in NY. Last time I ever bought her a MK’s bag because this one was garbage. Seems MK, this is now your day to be out.
I love Michael kors he's one of my favorite designers becoming mainstream was a wonderful idea for regular shoppers with affordable prices and excellent quality
I still like Michael Kors fashion. But sometimes its frustrating seeing so many people with the same items on. But his styles are still beautiful and fashionable.
His couture line was always good, but his lower price goods were always such crap. Don’t jump all over me for being a snob, I shop thrift and resale, I know quality and have worked as a stylist for over 20 years for I.Magnin, Burberry, Hermes and more.
Sorry to hear about this. However, the luxury “heritage” brands like Balenciaga turn out a lot of trash. And, who forced Danatella (if she was the sole owner) to sell?
I seen his things over the years and thought some of it was nice, but for theMK on it. I feel ridiculous wearing something with a luxury tag. It’s not modest.
Well goody for you, I have seen all the HOUSEWIVES wearing clothes with Labels, but then maybe they are paid, personally I don't care , what I laugh about it's the people who really can't afford the luxury Brands are the ones, who seek them the most.
Exactly! And what a bitchy, obnoxious queen! That must have had something to do with it. His taste is horrible! Being gay, I am not being homophobic when I say this!
In reading all of the comments, I realized 2 things: people commenting are quite young & ignorant or middle-aged & older & ignorant. MK had a creative vision; otherwise he wouldn't have become so successful @ such a young age. I own a genuine MK python bag that I thought was a real steal. Most snakeskin bags are "embossed" because the real snakeskin costs $2,000 +. The late Karl Lagerfeld went into the Chanel archives & gave the old designs a fresh look -- some people called that innovative. It wasn't; it was repurposing Coco's old designs in new fabrics, colors, patterns with different buttons & zippers. Big Deal! Lagerfeld also designed a cheaper synthetic line @ a lower price point under his own name & made tons of money. Did that cheapen his designs for Chanel? Even Ralph Lauren has various price points for his different lines. What's the big deal? His loyal customers still buy his expensive, Italian-made luxury items knowing that he also sells the same items @ lower prices in different colors/patterns/fabrics, etc. Like MK, RL is a businessman first who happens to earn a great living as a purveyor of taste--his taste--for those customers who can afford luxury & for those who can't. Nothing wrong with that. Snobs get over yourselves. FYI: many Italian luxury brands are made by Chinese people living & working in Rome's garment district. There are over 250,000 undocumented illegal Chinese aliens in Italy working for slave wages in Chinese-owned factories. The Chinese owner has an Italian partner to facilitate/navigate (circumvent) the Italian legal system. Gianni Vetsace's older brother is a member of Parliament who succeeded in pushing through the law that allows anything made on ITALIAN SOIL -- regardless of who makes it -- to carry the label "Made in Italy." D&G bags are made by a Chinese woman who is an expert in their stitching. In the early aughts, NY Times fashion journalist, Cathy Horyn was aghast @ having paid a fortune for a famous French designer's sweater only to discover back in NYC the following: "Made in China." True luxury is in the eye of the wearer. A self-confident, stylish, chic, elegant woman can make a potato sack look sophisticated. Being able to combine J Crew (preppy) with Dior (classic) takes real talent, imagination & savoir-faire. Only those of a certain age (55+) can build an outfit around a belt or a designer scarf used as a belt or a pair of oxfords or a piece of jewelry: that's the real definition of classic and timeless fashion & quiet luxury, which the majority don't know anything about or how to begin. That's why there are so many style/fashion influencers on YT. It's a very lucrative market niche. Fashion savvy & knowledge is no longer generational; mothers don't take daughters shopping or point out what ti look for & buy. Generational knowledge & experience is no longer passed down from mom to daughter or grandma to granddaughter. Wearing hoodies & gym outfits to run errands or go to appointments are what many choose to wear. Sloppy comfort trumps good taste & an extreme lack of self-esteem. We live in an era where very, very few people care about their appearance. Those who do, always stand out in the crowd.
The handbags became like the “bad bridesmaids dress”…to many details! Logoed, studded, ruffled with cheaper looking materials. The brand just no longer looked either “jet set” or luxurious. Quel Domage! 👠👜🕶️
MK is still in all the high end stores and shopping plazas where I live. I’ve been wearing MK for many years and what I admire most is that his brand offers clothes in sizes for plus sized women. Very few luxury brands offer that. I just bought a gorgeous MK purse, wallet and bangle to wear to a political fundraiser. I completely disagree with this video and it honestly sounds like it was created by one of his competitors to attempt to damage his brand. I loved him as a judge on Project Runway too. He was hilarious!
I tell you I have not buying a purse for $1000. I am not buying a handbag for $7000. Do you know what that $7000 can do for me if I invested I can yield a good return on my money. I’m not investing in a bag that I don’t know if it’s gonna be an investment or further down the line so no I like to have, a lot of of money in my purse and I think that the regular Walmart bag works just fine
I love Michael Kors - the man and his fashion. I am an everyday person and am offended people would consider my support of the brand a way to demean it.
I noticed a significant change in the quality of MK clothes. They used to be elegant, sophisiticated targetting probably 30/40+ women. Now the clothes are tacky, with the MK logo printed all over them, making them look cheap. Maybe they are going for a younger target audience..? Everything just looks and feels horrible but the prices are still high. Cheap high street quality and look with premium prices. It's doomed.
Michael Kors did the right thing. He mass produced his lower level brand and still very much has his couture brand. Let’s face it, the everyday women still very much buys MK.
Prada Versace Louis vit” balmain etc… are the same quality as the cheaper brands…the extra cost is for the overpaid designers and the multiple middlemen sales and marketing….i rather buy MK and Ck at Marshall’s or Ross and save my money…
His “collection” line is the high end fashion focus n very nice but the other Mk line is for low ends clients however Mk line kinda overshadowed his luxury line n no one really notice how good his actual designs are. But Mk is the main money maker for sure, the tacky bags, those jet set watches, every basic bish accessories 🫢😅
I don’t care if Michael Kors is overexposed, underexposed, or what. His clothes are beautifully designed and so wearable. I would never wear some of the jokes that are considered high fashion. Michael Kors has an innate sense of style and he knows what women want to wear. He’ll always be my favorite designer.
I was in a department store last week and the staff there was pulling all of the fixtures and furniture from the MK (not the collection line) shop off of the sales floor. I asked someone that worked there what was going on and they said, ‘We will not be going forward with Michael Kors,’ was their response. Along with that, in the very same mall a British brand was shutting down their store with neon bright banners in the windows proclaiming everything was 40-60% off.
His bags are better quality than many other brands, including coach, CK, Lauren, It was tested during Covid. I had to throw away all because they dry rotted, and the handles became sticky. EXCEPT Michael Kors & DB bags which I have them, from 10yrs ago to present. His bags are more attractive and beautifully designed. Will continue to buy them until there is none. Buy quality, not just expensive
they all make the same mistakes: Versace, Armani, MK, Prada, D&G etc. Greedy expansion leads to cheaper production to spread the cost thinner and raising margins. All those (former) Sub Brands like V2 by Versace, Versace Jeans/Sport, Armani Jeans/Collezioni and D&G have diluted their markets and ruined their brands. Why would the targeted customer buy the high end brand when the masses is running around in the cheap stuff? The funny thing is that Balenciaga is showing cheap design with big logos but for a ridiculous price.
Simplicity is elegance, there are millions of women all over the world who could afford this quiet elegance, no need to compete with other fashion houses..🇳🇦
Too many designers do this ...... They start to struggle for profits so are tempted to bring out "economy" lines even down to collaborations with supermarkets. In turn, that means many wealthier customers will no longer buy. I have never bought MK ..... To me it is synonymous with LV canvas ..... Bought by "secretaries and bank tellers with a credit card".
