Today I'm going to take you on a tour to check out one of my favourite places in the Victorian Goldfields - Kingower!
I love it out that area because it's a long way from anywhere, it's quiet, and it's packed with history. Plus the drive out there takes me through Dunolly and Moliagul, past the Matrix Reef, and through the old Berlin goldfield. I love it!
So here we are in Kingower, surrounded by peaceful bushland, old gold workings, ruins and relics of a bygone era, and some pretty incredible views!
I'm going to show you some very significant historical sites, as well as some interesting features which you can look out for throughout the bushland of the Victorian Goldfields - including coppicing, puddling machines, and areas which have been surfaced by the old time gold miners.
Kingower has a claim to fame as the discovery site of the largest gold nugget ever found with a metal detector - the Hand of Faith! But that's just one little snippet of the area's rich and fascinating history.
The Kingower goldfield was opened in 1853 and quickly became renowned for its abundance of massive gold nuggets, attracting thousands of diggers! Part of the Kingower field later became known as the Potato Diggings. Huge nuggets lay about as plentiful as potatoes in a field, and were regularly pried from the earth with great excitement.

My last piece of gold from the back of Kingower weighed 31.76 grama at 98.2% purity. I call it the Old Timer Nugget because it looks just like a old timer. Can't put a photo of it up, unfortunately.

Almost 1 oz even! During the 1800’s gold rushes the old timers were young men in old times. Also 31.76 “grama” is not proper grammar, the correct grammar pronunciation is 31.76 gramm”eR”, always pronounce “all” R’s clearly and completely at the end of all words and “all” R’s in the middle of words for an example in t”aR”get as well.
