I agree with you that Gatiss should be counted as the worst writer of the revival. Chibnal's problem is not that he writes the worst, most cringy scripts possible. His problem is that he writes the blandest of unflavored oatmeal scripts that only make full sense to him. As a guest writer, this makes him consistently mid. He writes filler for Moffat and RTD. As a showrunner? Well, honestly, I would've preferred they gave the show to someone whose episodes I consistently loathed because then at least I would've felt a.n.y.t.h.i.n.g in regards to Doctor Who in those years. Gatiss does terrible Who. I think he writes extremely good TV as long as it ISN'T Who. See: An Adventure in Space and Time for a script where Gatiss is killing it. Historical Bio-Drama? He can do that. Contemporary mystery? Mostly ok at that too. Most of his credited episodes on Sherlock are pretty alright. Lots of stuff he writes is fine. My guess is that he writes better with the constraints of the real world placed on him. You need to be kind of a lunatic to be able to actually embrace the infinite toybox Who provides you as a writer and people like Gatiss and Chibbers are just better writing realistic fiction. You need to be brain-broken in a more early Moffat, Neil Gaiman way to take full advantage of Who.
The malignant tumour Moffat killed the show for me - trying to turn it into 'The Time Traveller's Wife'. It's only poetic justice that his own official adaptation was a damp squib.
You might be surprised by us being here throughout 40 minutes but I gotta let you know I un-ironically sit through 2-5 hours of video essay almost daily. As a creative person it's like a good podcast on your favorite subject, or literally a subject you've never thought about! Either way it's great listening to while doing whatever art project I've thrown at myself. The more detail you go into the longer I'll stay. And you have a good opinion.
Great analysis, cannot wait for the next one! Also, I do think Moffatt is one of the best writers for the show. We didn’t really touch on Rory being the man who waited, or the details that went into managing River’s timeline, but it takes skill to do that! If I’m being honest, I was a bit worried after watching the star beast for RTD’s return. I feel like even Moffat writes better episodes than those. Luckily the last two specials have been pretty good though. Anyways, with the exception of the slander for Amy and Rory’s final episode (tsk tsk) this is a perfect take on the entire timeline of Nuwho!
No doubt running a show is tough and it's a lot easier to criticise a writers work than it is to write something yourself. I find a lot of people's criticisms of Moffat in particular to be disingenuous when saying he's a bad writer because he very clearly isn't. Like with any creative person EVER some of his stuff works and some of it doesn't, just because I'm critical of some of his and RTD's work doesn't mean I have any less respect for either of them and for all they've contributed to the show :) Also you're sooooo wrong about ATM looooooool
i honestly think that with a cleaner camera, you could genuinely get to like 10k by next year, youve got a pretty distinct vibe going for you and your videos (or the two that ive watched thus far) are pretty damn funny
I think you are wrong about Pompeii being a fixed point. The whole twist and emotional stakes of the episode is that it turns out that Vesuvious was NOT meant to blow. the Doctor realizes that he has a CHOICE and that to prevent a bigger catastrophe HE has to make the choice to KILL all those people by MAKING Vesuvious explode. Donna chooses to ease his guilt by SHARING the action, helping him work the machinery.
@edgeofthemap I am serious. It's funny, it shows an earlier version of River, it develops her, and Mel stuff might not make sense, but I don't think it's that big of a deal.
Honestly matts first spell as the doctor gets goat status on me for the Pandorica monologue alone. To this day it still gives me goosebumps listening to it
The way you described the Flood villains from the Waters of Mars reminded me of a korean drama 'The Silent Sea' that sort of reimagined the idea of a deadly water based contagion, but on the moon. Unfortunately despite the longer run time they didn't tell a more interesting story. (I don't know if its lost in translation but many korean scifi often fall short on developing interesting ideas). but the body count is higher.
You better get up to 12, Listen was one of the ones that traumatised tf outta me and ik your commentary for Heaven Sent and Hell Bent’ll be hysterical 😂😂 Also it’s a tiny thing but thank you for even mentioning transphobia, like genuinely it made me feel p safe so-
Congratulations on your growth, your a very charismatic person and have a good sense of humour, have a good Christmas and well done on over a 1,000 subscribers
I thought you were a bit too harsh on Rebel Flesh/Almost People. It's no masterpiece, but I thought it was perfectly serviceable with cool concept carrying a rather poor plot.
Hey man love these vids. Currently watching s4 with my bf and now at the very end at the specials, every time we watch an episode I put this on to compair notes almost like an after show
When you called me a lunatic at the end I am not afraid to admit I checked the view count to see how many more lunatics were around Also The God Complex is one of the greatest single serve episodes in modern Doctor Who Also Dinosaurs On A Spaceship, while it is fair to say it's mediocre or even cringe, it's 100 percent aimed at Classic Who fans and upon recently rewatching it I would nonironically class it as one of the best stories in the entirety of modern Who, but I'm a classic fanboy so I'm biased The rest of your takes are based Edit: RITA! RITA PLEASE! PLEASE! RITA! RITA PLEASE!
I share your pain with the accent thing. I'm australisn, I barely even have the characteristic slur we all have and people say they can't understand me. As far as I can tell though, so long as your sub captions are somewhat accurate to what you're saying you're doing fine
I don't think your accent is unintelligible, and I'm American! My only point of (temporary) confusion was the way you say 'show' sounds like 'shirt' to me, lol. But I've really enjoyed your stuff so far- subscribed and everything!
Your viewership went up because Dr who content is trending and the algorithm is bringing you new eyes. Don't let it get to your head, and don't break your back trying to roll out content. Just keep doing you and leave the "calls to action" to a minimum.
As an American, I have to say the "salad bar" comment is completely inaccurate. Most of us would run the other way from salad of any sort. I think you meant to say "an all you can eat dessert buffet."
Ooh, great analysis. From a Dr Who old timer. Nice to see someone not licking the 10th Doctor's ar*e for a change. You are right, the 11th Doctor is back as the mysterious Timelord again, as he should be. Matt Smith's tenure was the best of the new era. Shame there weren't more of he & Clara episodes because, in my opinion which matters not, that was near damn perfection. The 11th Doctor & Clara in the TARDIS was the best of new Who. Can't wait for the new vid. You'll probably tear them apart, now I've said that😬😆. It's great to find a Who channel which speaks my language. Great stuff. Keep it up (no ooh er intended) 😁
I love Matt Smith’s doctor but his series were some of the worst because of the lack of any and all character development, especially compared to that of 9 and 10. I quite like 11 as well, probably my personal favorite of all Who behind 4, but I really don’t think the production was doing him justice
I've always felt Dr who is a really good sci-fi adventure let down by complete silliness. The theme and tone just get overshadowed by terrible writing. If they can just overcome this then Dr who could become a really good series.
Let me tell you something. Victor Lewis Smith had the right idea. TV Offal. The Doctor travelled in Turdis, plus the Doctor met the Gay Daleks who liked to ex-spreminate. Plus, the Doctor liked some in and out with a Dalek sink plunger. All this back in the 1990's from the late master of comedic dark humour. only to become a hardened fact in 2023. Well, sort of...
Great video!! I have to say I liked Lets kill hitler i dont know why I know it has a lot of problems, I guess it just hit me at the right time or something but I really enjoyed series 6 for some reason, watching it live was incredible
“Undisputed, best first episode of a doctor. And best opening”. … Yeah, I can stop the video now. If that’s your view. Pretty sure we won’t be agreeing on much of anything.
Matt smith I've met he's awesome wish I met peter capaldi last of the era of the modern best doctors David t and cath t did well on their role I was the one who could have been in the Dr who q1th doctor but I chose not to I was there I've seen it all the acting and the greats
I really had fun with both your last videos and was considering subscribing but the fatphobia is…ew. Makes me unconfortable and im not fat, I cant imagine how it must be for them to hear. This is more about the last video. I guess theres always something lol
I love so much how you stay neutral and don't insert politics into any of your media analysis. Not like those woke liberals. Nah but seriously jesus christ britain is going to absolute shit. I'm an englishman, and while i have hope that labour will win after the absolute shitshow the tories call an administration, but given how they've outlawed protest i wouldn't be suprised if they fucking dissolved all other parties and dismantled our democracy before the next general election. Sorry for the rant, not really related to Doctor Who at all, but also i'm not sorry fuck you i'll rant wherever i want, you can't tell me what to do. Also Doctor Who is a banger show, prob my fave of all time.
@@HappyMirica First Tennant one was a bit shit, but a fun watch. Second one was great. Third one was also good, and had the best scene of the specials (the dance number) and the Gatwa one was fun and a good intoduction to him and Ruby.
