There are unrealistic parts of the movie and things it gets wrong but I’d say overall it’s moderately to loosely accurate. There are things it hits almost perfectly. It brought me back to the distant feeling, like you’re so far away from Earth that you get when you look out those windows at night and remember that people are living their lives in those little bubbles of light. The look and feel of the squad bay/barracks is accurate, the fast eating etc. Most movies don’t get Drill Instructors correct but this one overall gets it correct. I’d never heard a Senior DI refer to the other DIs as hats (ie kill hat Brooks and drill hat Rosales). But those would technically be their positions but it’s more DI inside lingo that sometimes spills out. Senior DIs do give a speech but it’s more well orchestrated and foreboding than what I felt the movie delivered…you can actually google the actual DI speech. Overall the platoon seemed to be in shambles with multiple recruits speaking without being spoken to or requesting permission to speak which is a big thing in bootcamp and it mostly goes unaddressed by the Senior DI played by Woodbine. I’ve never seen a platoon behave in that manor. Now I’m sure recruits have set up homosexual recruits in the past and beat them up and such…I have a family member that said it happened but not because they were gay but because they bought a ribbon/medal that they had not earned…But I know for a fact during DADT all the way back in all of military history homosexuals likely got hazed if they were too obvious. When I went through there was a gay recruit (I assume he was) that actually was S A by another recruit and they sent the other recruit home. I would have expected it to be the opposite, that the flamboyant recruit would have been the one to perpetrate that type of activity and not that he would be victimized but I learned and I was wrong. The last scene with the protagonist and the DI that takes up for him…I just couldn’t see a time where a recruit would be allowed to find their way into a shower while DIs were presently taking said shower. To make physical contact that wasn’t swiftly reprimanded by intense yelling or violence is uncharacteristic in a hypothetical situation like that. People got hit over much smaller things than putting their hands on a naked showering drill instructor. The swimming scene was off as to my knowledge and experience, there is no portion of Swim Qualification where a DI engages in underwater combat with a recruit. At most maybe a recruit is struggling to swim and a DI jumps in to save the recruit from drowning and the recruit freaks out causing the DI to get violent to stop him from drowning you both….or the DI has it out for the recruit and under the guise of trying to save him, prolongs his exposure to the water to make him suffer while retrieving the recruit. But even then it isn’t the DIs that do that job, it’s the Swim Instructors who are many times other Marines and sometimes DIs that are on a rest cycle from training. The movie got the small details like shirt colors and logos during PT…random banter, the actual process of showering and the look of the showers…the sand pits and the sand fleas that bite you throughout the day, the DI response for killing a sand flea may not be far from telling a recruit to eat it, or to dig a standard human grave for it. The phone call home at the beginning of bootcamp is much different, you can’t just say anything, you actually read a script tapes to the phone. But other things like counting off and the little blue bags they held out (called Blue Valuable/Money Bags) were extremely accurate. NOW someone for the life of me explain why there’s homoerotic fantasies popping up throughout the movie….I was always confused when it happened because I didn’t know the purpose. Was he really attracted to these men? Was seeing them nude a turn on to him? It kinda seemed to perpetuate the stereotype that all gay men are attracted to straight men. I just didn’t understand why those clips were in the movie. There’s a lot more but I’ll wrap it up.

This is a must see! A movie by and for gays. The director/writer Elegance Britton was thrown out at 16 for being gay, was homeless for 10 years b4 joining the marines. I can't wait to see his story. And with handsome talented Jeremy Pope in the lead! Can't wait. Thank you Victor 💓💓

Can you ask Elegance something for me? What was his purpose in having the homoerotic fantasy scenes spliced through the movie? It would confuse me each time it happened. I felt it perpetuated the stereotype that gay men are secretly fantasizing about all straight men etc. The reason why many straight men come off aggressive and feel uncomfortable around gay men. I just had a hard time understanding the point they served.

I was just about to write you about the good news about our movie. A movie starring an openly gay man telling our stories. Jeremy Pope is a GOOD actor. I know he's going to be INCREDIBLE in the role!!!!! I remember Jeremy in Pose and Hollywood. I been campaigning so hard that there should be more diversity in lead acting roles especially if they're playing roles in underrepresented groups. Finally we get diversity not only in storytelling but by the storyteller as well!

I know this is controversial but because the playing field is not quite equal, meaning gay actors are still largely underrepresented in movie roles, I would like to see MORE gay actors leading films. Trust me, we all know that there is a surplus of talent of gay actors, we're just not provided with the same opportunities as straight actors. That's why I atleast like to see gay actors atleast playing gay roles. Ryan Murphy helps, but he's only one person.

God. This story hits me. Its like what happened to me before and after joining the philippine intel. I was a street dweller and gay for pay before. My two sisters kicked me out of the house coz they dont liked me and wished i was never been borned. When opportunity knocked to me the third time, i really grabbed to it tight. Finished college, while a kind mentor got me recommended to join the agency, recieving training. It was hard. I cried every night for the mental and physical torture and exhaustion. Thats when i found out that like me, there are lots of non straight people in the agencies. Silent. But proud.

Some of them triumphed. Most of them failed and end up in the streets. Though there are few influential people STILL using using other's past for their advantage (i have a superior who as of now uses me as his cum dump, found out i was a gay for pay before). I dont know know how to escape this life. Though It isnt so bad at all, hes good looking and he thinks im his property. And he protected me from other predators in the society that we detectives are in. Hes like a protective brother and my tormentor at the same time.

Wanted to make sure you got tthe views but I'll be passing on this film. Glad to hear the brother made it through to the other side after what his mother did and surviving the military in the 90s but I really don't feel compelled to go on that journey with him. I'll be skipping this one as well.

I will try to see it, but I doubt it will be shown any where in a 200 mile radius of where I live. Near Orlando FL. Gay themed much less movies about about a gay marine will never be shown here.

I think the movie could’ve been better. I think that it was a sorry that had to be told. But in some parts it just seemed it was trying too hard to be shocking. And it took away from the message.

You know, when you live in the straight world all you life you come across some strange things through the years. People, places, things....some things just don't fit in the world, at least from my eyes. When you live in the gay world there are also many things that are strange, at least to me. I have seen now, some of your videos......and they are strange. As a gay person with what I consider a very normal life, your videos and the people you talk about are very strange. And yet, I get the impression that you talk about these different people like they are part of a normal gay life. And that is what is strange to me. I know most of them are actors in movies, so I guess the movies are very strange. I watch mostly Asian BLs and those gay people, to me, arfe more normal than the ones you watch.
