Twister absolutely holds up today. Incredible cast, fun and interesting premise, and surprisingly strong visual effects compared to the muddy shit we see in $300m+ blockbusters these days. Sure there are a handful of truly awful CGI shots, but most, if not all of the actual twister effects are shockingly great for being 30 years old. They treat the chase scenes as legitimate action set pieces jam packed with convincing suspense and thrills. Jan de Bont seriously knows how to direct action, especially vehicular set pieces between this and Speed. He also was DP on some all timers in the action space like Die Hard, Black Rain, Hunt for Red October, Lethal Weapon 3, etc.

hardly, it was pretty okay. It didn't hold a candle to the original. It felt like they built the entire movie around the action set pieces and tried to backfill the plot to match. It was empty.

It is also not “shifting east,” at least not indefinitely. Dr Ted Fujita documented this as cyclical in the mid 70s (74 or 75). Not getting worse (no EF5s in 11 years!). I expect this nonsense to be in the movie and I’m just hoping it’s not totally in your face.

@FrameVoyager
@FrameVoyager Месяц назад
The "shifting east" aspect of it has yet to be tied to climate change. Based on models it's been shifting 150 miles east since the 1800's so it's more of a naturally occurring shift. It has more to do with the the areas that are seeing the "largest increase in tornado frequency" Which are in southern Mississippi, middle Tennessee, and south west Kentucky. That also has been found to be more of a shift from warm weather season tornados to more cold season tornados. I'm no climatologist of course, so all I can do is read the studies and examine the data and the validity of how the studies were put together. It seems worth looking at these newer studies and determining if other areas should prepare more for this regional increase in tornados. Here are some studies that show the shift "not talking about climate change": Study overview: www.scientificamerican.com/article/watch-out-tornado-alley-is-migrating-eastward/ Recent peer reviewed study which is not based on climate change: journals.ametsoc.org/view/journals/apme/aop/JAMC-D-23-0143.1/JAMC-D-23-0143.1.xml

That’s what I’m saying, like the vibe of twister and twisters are completely different to me because of the music, there was all sorts of diverse bands that put into the movie to come together and make a cool ass soundtrack and twisters just has one guy and like it wasn’t bad but it would have been so much better if they threw in some Van Halen like the original, I was really hoping to hear it as a throwback to the og for people who like the og but 200 million dollar budget only gets you so far, I wish I enjoyed twisters and much as I did twister, I think it also just wasn’t super laughable like the og, they needed a better dusty character

though it's a "stand alone" as they claim, the plot is almost the same with the original: protagonist has a traumatic experience, has a mad/new idea or theory to test, rejoins the gang, hunts tornadoes, becomes a victim of a tornado at night at a recreational event, would learn a new idea to incorporate in her old idea for the plan to work, then finally encounters a large-ass tornado in the end to use her new and improved idea/contraption. i also like the part where they used dorothy and she said "I'm not back." those were homages to the old movie.

I was hoping to get my hands on the water shots at @10:33 but they were already handed over to other artists. so I got to work on some tornadoes and supercells (including the one at @7:38 and @8:46).. absolutely the most difficult thing to recreate.. the dynamics of clouds was no easy, the rendering of the clouds was even worse. We had to experiment with some of the most latest rendering tool/techniques just to make them look like cloud without killing our render farms. lol fun time
@FrameVoyager

@@FrameVoyager The anamorphic lens used in this film are actually pretty good. The worst I worked on was black panther 2.. the lenses were just so "flawed" the corners of the frame were literally just stretched pixels so blurry felt like miniature shots. I wouldn't say favourite.. but a few hero tornado shots, the artists had to keep making adjustments throughout the entire project.. because of the improvement on rendering techniques and things. sucks for them, had to look at those shots for over half of a year.. but they do look really nice at the end. The compositing department did a lot of heavy lifting blending the original plate, stormchaser footage and CG.. About the original Twister, I have no idea as well how they were able to create them. talent and passion I think. The only thing I know about CG back then was that the artists had to send the digital images to their film lab to get the images printed, so they could present in dailies the next day.. and monitors were so small they had to work on 1/4 of the frame at a time.. must be fun haha

It was big for my childhood as well. I also watched it again before making this video. But it's not a disrespect to the film in general, I still like it. But twister main cgi component can't be replicated with a practical or miniature stand in. Beyond effects though, it's not a "great movie" Im not saying it's not watchable, but there is a clear difference between twister and a film like Jurassic park. So no disrespect 😅

Intense cgi and green screen! 🤣
@FrameVoyager
@FrameVoyager Месяц назад
Sure, there was green screen and cgi in the film as is the case with almost any film that is made in 2024. The "Intense" part comes from the loads of on location filming and stunts they did in combination with the visual effects.

This is the worst movie I have watch in a long time. So many things done wrong and the first 2/3rds of the movie was like watching an old JAWS movie where you know something might happen but that doesn't. Also very predictable from the start to the finish. Also very very bad acting. I was really excited to watch it and even more disappointed after watching it. Pay attention to the UHF radios on the dashboard in ALL of the trucks. None of them have an antenna connected but somehow still works. The cowboy drives his truck through a barbwire fence and magically goes through it without damaging the fence. The cowboy in his truck stopped is about half a mile away in one seen but as soon as Kate turns around to get in her truck the cowboy drives in front of her. That's just a few things the movie was terrible. I give it 2 out of 10.

Helen Hunt so cringe. Her pitch was seriously “Twister but everyone is black & brown except me. But I will die”. That’s not a pitch.
@FrameVoyager
@FrameVoyager Месяц назад
I'm all for diverse castings. I think diversity brings fresh perspectives that are desperately needed in art and storytelling. But how she describes her idea for the story comes across as patronizing and strange.
@kevinandrewsphoto
@kevinandrewsphoto Месяц назад
@@FrameVoyager - yeah nobody wants to see all white casts everywhere. But the color of the cast has nothing to do with its story, its theme, its direction. Casting should be done to fit the characters, not used as puppets. Same thing with female casts. This is why Annihilation worked and Ghostbusters 2016 or Oceans 13 didn’t. One film used a full female cast and integrated it into the story. The other 2 used them to pat themselves on the back. Which is basically what Helen Hunt described.
@FrameVoyager
@FrameVoyager Месяц назад
@@kevinandrewsphotoYeah, to me it always just comes down to uninspired writing and studios constantly doing retread sequel or reboot films. Films like Nope, Everything Everywhere all at once, Furiosa, etc. show what you can do with a diverse cast and storytelling. If Helen Hunt had more of a reason to want a diverse cast to fit the story it would have been fine. Like one aspect she could have talked about was the lack of diversity within meteorologists. Maybe the story could have been about inspiring different kids of different background to get into meteorology. But to telegraph that's what you're doing is bizarre

3:59 "It's a completely original story." Lol, Lmao even~ What are they talking about? It is precisely the same story with a few things tweaked. Entire sequences AND plot threads are ripped almost verbatim from the original. "completely original" Lolz, why call it "Twisters" then? whatever, that aside... I did enjoy it, I liked it, it was a great tornado movie but it doesn't live up to the original, if it didn't have the Title implying a connection i wouldn't have been bothered as much.

Hunt was going down the DEI rabbit hole and taking Twister with her? Glad that didn't pan out then. It would have only tanked the IP, especially these days. Nobody wants woke Twister, or woke anything. The market has spoken.
