Summer Schedule
Our schedule may vary, but expect a new video 3 days a week at 11AM Central!
How Farms Work by Ryan Kuster is a RU-vid channel based in rural Potosi, Wisconsin.
Our mission is to teach those who didn't grow up on a farm what the farming life is like.
These videos show the Kuster family working together raising cattle and crops. We believe everyone who wants to know more about farming should be able to share the farming experience with us and we look to educate the world on many essential agriculture topics.
How Farms Work takes place on ~1,100 acres with around 75-200 cattle at any given time. Four John Deere tractors are currently used on the farm, which are a 4020, 4640, 7600, and 8235R.

A step deck would be better, use it to haul bales and equipment. Just get some of those ramps that you can store on the side when not in use and then pull them out when they need to drive equipment onto the trailer.

I was born and raised on a dairy farm. My families farm was sold about 20 years ago and I would absolutely not recommend agriculture to any of my kids. The only exception would be if your family already has a running, profitable farm. Farming was an awesome way to grow up, but nowadays there is no such thing as a "start up" farm. Money is not everything and its not happiness, but trust me, you will not be happy if your dying broke like my grand father. I dont know how any small to mid size farm makes it in this country. New tractor half million, health insurance...... 30k per year..... etc..etc....

Those are some monster windrows! That rake is handling it very well. I don't like to use our V-Rake much, because it ropes the hay and makes baling difficult. The last field I was in I hit a slug of hay in a windrow which stalled my tractor. Those windrows were also enormous. I was very surprised that megawide pickup didn't clog up. It just happily kept stuffing hay into the bale chamber. Lol!

Not to mention all of the rough science behind all of seeding and planting and this and that. Such as what crops are bad/good in a certain area and how much rain is not enough/ to much. It's alot of work nowadays even with technology. I just want to say Amazing Job and keep up the amazing content. :)

Hillsides and slopes... they can do some really funny stuff to machinery... I've heard guys in hill country that won't even pull a small round baler with less than a 150 horsepower tractor because when it gets a bale in it it will just push them all over the place, particularly in a turn or if the ground is the least bit slippery... there's a lot of iron in that rake and I wouldn't be surprised to hear it can push them around on a steep slope or slippery conditions (not just wet/muddy but sometimes just damp grass can be way slipperier)... She's teaching school now and the schools are *VERY* funny about their staff's activities on social media, particularly Facebook and RU-vid... It's sad but true *everybody else* in the world is allowed to "have a life" but if you do or say *anything* that the biggest prude or nutjob in the community happens to find "offensive" you can RAPIDLY find yourself out of a job and your career in serious jeopardy... Sad but it's the sickening state our society has come to. I wouldn't be surprised AT ALL if Jamie decided not to appear in any videos because of that issue alone. I know she also got pretty tired of bad comments about her doing farm work in flip-flops and of course you always have a few perverts that feel compelled to make lecherous statements to any attractive female and I'm pretty sure she didn't like that sort of thing either... It's just 'how it is' and while we'd all like to see Jamie more things will have to change for her situation or with attitudes of others before it would happen... Later! OL J R : )

That's where having an old New Holland 256 or 258 or heck even an old straight-axle NH 55 (or the equivalent built by any number of companies) around the farm would be nice... basically roll up an 8.5-9.5 foot swath into a windrow and move on to the next one... even narrowed down "all the way" (which I *suppose* that it *could* have been narrowed down more but I'm not sure... ) that rake is almost *too wide* for hay that thick... even sticking the outside wheels up next to the last windrow so that side is basically raking "clean ground" (already raked into the last windrow) it was still cranking out some monster windrows... Those big wide wheel rakes are terrific in large acreage rectangular fields, particularly in light hay, but in small irregular fields and heavy swaths they can really be a handful... Later! OL J R :)
