Huge TISS fan. I'm from Assam. I speak English, Hindi, Assamese, Bodo (mother tongue) and bit of Bengali. Fact - Bodo is actually written in Hindi. But pronounced differently. Many languages from Northeast India have similar words. For example, in Bodo water is pronounced as "dwi" which is same as that of Manipuri's and Tripuri's.

Sanskrit is an Indo-Aryan language, whereas Tamil is a Dravidian language. They're not related in any way. They both co-existed for a really really long time and kind of influenced each other, which is why there still are some words common in both. Most South Indian languages came from Tamil, and most North Indian languages came from Sanskrit.

Thank you! I was also a bit bummed about bawa saying this. Thamizh and Sanskrit are certainly ancient languages but thamizh is not derived from sanskrit. But again one cannot deny the influence that sanskrit has had on thamizh. There are so many sanskrit words that are used in thamizh every day. Also thamizh and sanskrit have contributed to a lot to many English words we use today, eg the English word rice comes from the latin word or oryza which in turn comes from the thamizh word arisi

Absolutely loved today’s episode (may be because I have a vested interest in it)! I speak 6 languages and can speak 3 more in case I have to survive! In fact my photography company’s name is also an untranslatable word in English... it’s called ‘Meraki pictures’. Meraki is a Greek word that is used to describe doing something with soul, creativity, or love -- when you put "something of yourself" into what you're doing, whatever it may be! I think this word works best for people in the creative fields 😊 Great episode as usual ❤️

Tamil is not a derivative of Sanskrit. From Sanskrit to English including all other major European and middle eastern languages are Indo-European languages. Tamil Telugu Kannada Malayalam and other derivatives in south India are Dravidian languages, with varying levels of influence from Sanskrit and English words in the currently spoken form.

I agree. Earliest evidence of tamil from Anuradhapuram, Sri Lanka has no Sanskrit influence. Wayanad too has petroglyphs showing independent origins of South indian tongues. Finally latest evidence suggests Sangam and Harappan link to show antiquity of Dravidian languages, especially with Mahadevan, Asko Parpola suggest even Harappan script was part of larger world of proto dravidan scripts. Having said that there is no doubt with greater interactions with vedic aryans, Sanskrit did have an influence on Tamil
@georgeyjoy
@georgeyjoy 3 года назад
@Lost Soul and @Jyoti Iyer don't bother fighting which one came first and which one is the parent of the other. This fight leads to no place of resolution. Both languages have no common origin both are from different language families. @Veena there is enough influence of Sanskrit and English on the current spoken form of Dravidian languages. And this does not prove the common origin for these languages. The influence is basically because of the co-existence of people speaking these languages in the same geographical area and trade between them.

Correction: Tamil is not a derivative of Sanskrit. However in India there are 3 main language groups, the Indo-European languages which include Sanskrit and Persian and currently is North Indian Hindustani, the Dravidian group of languages including Tamil, Telgu and a few others and which are spoken surprisingly enough in Pakistan and some other countries of South East Asia. The third and most underrated and under-reasearched language group is that of the Aadivasis/ Tribals which is known as the Munda language group found in Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Orissa etc.and is suppose to be a relative of the language spoken by indigenous Australians and according to recent findings is nearly as old as Sanskrit or Tamil if not more.

Hi, great episode as always guys, thank you so much. I was just looking through the comments to see if someone explained the METHI phenomenon. I couldn't find any comments related to it so thought I will talk about it. Most of human proteins begin with MET because that is the code for methionine which is the first amino acid translated from the RNA. Hence titin has to begin with MET.

The reason we start speaking like other people when we're in their country or state (dialect switches) is an innate tendency among people to want to seem "similar" or as part of an "in-group". The ability to do that is called *code switching*. Look it up. It's super interesting.

I would suggest reading ‘Orientalism’ by Edward Said. This is after the ‘Conquest’ theory mentioned in the Podcast.
