A range of neurological and neuropsychological features have been associated with celiac disease, including headaches, ataxia (coordination problems), peripheral neuropathy (numbness, tingling or pain from nerve damage), cognitive challenges and “brain fog,” to name a few. Samuel Frank, MD, a neurologist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Associate Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School, and Benny Kerzner, MD, medical director of the Celiac Disease Program at Children’s National Hospital, will lead the discussion. Attendees will learn about the connection between our nervous system and celiac disease in pediatric and adult patients, as well as non-celiac gluten sensitivity.

Excellent, I enjoyed this video very much. We have come along way since my diagnosis some 20 years ago. Unfortunately more people are being diagnosed with CD. I’m very strict with my diet at home, however eating out is still a problem for me. Many chefs, cooks in cafe’s and restaurants don’t always understand a gluten free diet, and cross contamination can be a big problem. Thank you Drs.

Regarding the question around 1:07:36 about celiac disease and seizures, I spent 17 years having about 10 to 12 "seizures" per day (petit seizures, or I called them brain farts). The last 2 years of that period I also had severe heart burn, leading up to a colonoscopy and endoscopy with biopsy that determined I had celiac disease. Once I got the celiac disease diet all figured out, my seizures and heart burn went away completely. I can still get a petit seizure maybe 20 or 30 times in a year due to gluten cross contamination, but that's effectively zero compared to 10 or more per day. Regarding the discussion around that time in the video about getting mega-dosed with gluten and the result that might have, that did happen to me a few years ago when I put quinoa into my meal prep that was not labelled gluten free. I had a grand mal seizure and went to the ER in an ambulance. I recommend *never* accidentally getting mega-dosed with gluten based on that experience--don't even take a chance eating out somewhere that claims a gluten-free option.
