One thing that we do for safety reasons is that we pass semis just as fast as we can... We do not hang out in that left lane visiting with the drivers LOL

My Team Oregon class (to get my endorsement) taught a basic strategy that if if you follow it and get comfortable with it really helps to have a safe and enjoyable ride. They use the acronym ‘SIPDE’, scan, identify, predict, determine, execute. Scan: Look for hazards and potential hazards about 10 seconds ahead of you. Know what’s around you. Identify: Identify what the hazards are and what are NOT hazards. Predict: What could happen if… Determine: If a hazard does occur what are your safe options to avoid the hazard. Execute: Be prepared and execute the emergency measure if the hazard happens. This is a bit of a simplification as the hazards can vary, but it’s a great method to be ‘one’ with your ride.

You know Coach Bob (3), there's just one, or two things that I would add. Hand signals. We are small - even with 3 wheels. I ride a '23 RT Limited in Dark Marsala Red. The color & M/C of my dreams having retired my beloved Moto Guzzi Cal III LAPD. We were all taught hand signals in riding school when we were kids. Even Clyde knows how to signal for a Right Turn Clyde thanks to another great Dirty Harry like movie. Too many numnuts leave their blinker on for so long we call them them the dumb guy signals. Blinka Blinka Blinka but when I issue a hand signal and a turn signal (most) drivers slow down and let me enter their lane. In Florida ramps are long and easy to reach. I know, we are part time Florida residents. In Southern New England, ramps may come up out of the next tree lined turn and suddenly have a marked 20 mph hairpin turn on them. They are admittedly hard to hand signal for but we do need to slow down for them on the hwy. I even use hand signals on regular roads even the stop, slow down one's. I'm 68 and started riding at 16. Hand signals work sometimes better than signals but always best with signals - when you can. Safety first at all times naturally!

We have a 2021 Spyder RT Limited . I installed Tric-Led light strips on the front running boards. They are white all the time. When you turn on your turn signals they change to flashing yellow. The cars take notice. Also added Tric-Led light strips to the rear of the bike.

A few tips from a 20 year truck driver (UPS).1. Please do not cut in front of these big trucks to squeeze in that spot, that’s our breaking zone. 2. NO bright lights at night, truck drivers hate that. 3. Cell phones down Eyes up. And with that y’all drive safe.

Hate the interstate during heavy traffic. We always taught our young truck drivers to keep their eyes moving. Always give space/ time to give you time to react to changing conditions. 5 seconds following distance is what we taught in perfect conditions The average driver only looks 3 seconds down the road. 10 seconds will give you time to react to emergencies. Great video and driving tips.

I like that you mention a key safety technique of keeping "air" between the cycle and other vehicles. I read Sonny Barger's book on riding and two key takeaways were that every vehicle is out to "murder" you and to be aware of that fact, the second was to keep air. Nice Job Coach Bob!

Good video Coach. As you recommended pass vehicles Quickly. Especially Semi-trucks. When one sees the reminents of tire carcasses on the side of the road they often are from tire Blow-Outs. A semi truck tire blew out and hit my aunt and her boy friend last fall while on a three wheeler (not a spyder) and they still are in a rehab facility over six months later. This could be me or you while driving especially on the interstate. Don't daudle there, plus you are less likey to be in their blind spot. This video reminded me of drivers ed. so many years ago with good instructors. One other thing to always think of, which isn't so bad when you are surrounded by steel, is where to drive to in an emergency situation. Those times when you might need to leave the pavement and head to the ditch to keep from hitting something deadly. Look for softer patches of grass and not the oak trees to aim for. Thanks for all the safety reminders Coach.

And remember, those big rigs are running RE-TREAD tires. That is why they come apart so easily, and frequently. THEY WILL KILL YOU. They should be illegal! As Coach Bob says, if a retread comes apart while you are following or passing a big rig, you will be lucky to come out alive!

Florida makes interstates look awesome. Great, flat roads with very little traffic. The interstate experience can be quite different around big cities. Merging at high speed was the very last lesson I taught my children. It is like a graduate level course and I did not want to scare them away from driving by getting them on an interstate too early. You are right, they are a necessary evil to get us across this vast land of ours. So far, I have managed to avoid them on my Spyder but my plans for the future has me hoping to take my Spyder far and wide and the will become a necessity. Great survival tips today! Thank you, Coach!

Florida has 1500 miles of interstates sarasota to tampa is 2.5-3 hour drive on weekdays, it's about 48 miles it took me 90 minutes to 6 miles this past tuesday. not all interstates are created equal. I won't even drive in my car on I-4.

Looked rather light (to me) in the videos. I am sure it gets worse. After > 30 years in Atlanta, I have still never seen traffic that light on the interstates, even late at night. I did have the privilege of driving to Tampa in January and I was impressed at the quality of Florida highways. Very well maintained!@@boonchilla

I'm am so trying to overcome my anxiety of driving over 60 mph. And so avoid interstates. Obviously that limits my participation in my club's organized rides. I did get on an interstate once on a club ride. My anxiety increased, the longer I was on it. Wish I knew how to get over my fear.
@PurpleOnThree

Can you find a time where traffic is low and go by yourself or with one other rider? Are you ok in a car on the interstate as far as not having anxiety?
@sammills7569
@sammills7569 4 месяца назад
Very good content. I deal with interstate traffic ALL THE WAY AROUND. On my bike, in pick up, and in my tractor trailer. Another reason why you should never follow close is because you cannot tell if the person in front of you is about to straddle something in the road. I often times find myself, because I drive trucks so much, driving my pickup truck and riding my bike using a lot of the same methods that I use in my truck. So you are correct. These techniques applied to all vehicles.

Backroads ar emore fun for sure. Love the Spyder sooo much better on the interstate than my old Goldwing GL1500. Amazing how good the syder feels at high speed. Dont ever comment much as we watch the videos on the TV. Enjoyed riding some of the Tallahasse backroads. You mention watching for deer several times.....we had a incident with a cow on the loose.

Sound advice for interstate riding. Another good tip for you; when you start feeling tired, pull off the interstate and rest up. Being tired or fatigued slows your reflexes and attention, and that makes you a road hazard for everyone else. Stop, rest, and resume later or, better, the next day. Cheers Coach!

The merging varies from state to state. In pennsylvania, we must yield to the traffic that is already out on the interstate. Traveling in canada, we learned that there is a thing called a zip merge where everyone takes turns whether you're already on the highway or you're entering onto the highway.

Hey Bob, great video! One thing I would add, when I'm on the interstate at speed I am always watching for vehicles stopped by the side of the road. It seems that along I75 here in Sarasota County, where I most frequently ride, often I am passing some sort of vehicle stopped in the emergency lane for what ever reason. As I approach first I quickly check the left lane behind me for an escape route. Then I am constantly, quickly monitoring the vehicle watching for movement of any kind. Especially if the escape route to my left is not available any movement by the stopped vehicle could possibly be the end of me. You must be ready to react if a stopped vehicle begins to move, and you must be aware of what is around you so you have options.

Coach! What's up! I finally jumped on I-35 here in Texas around the Georgetown/Round Rock area after avoiding it for a while, as I've found local routes I can take instead. All of the points you made in the video are what I have in use - one challenge we have here is short on-ramps which make you rev up fast. I'm finally getting ready for a long distance (Albuquerque) round trip on my Spyder in April. Looking forward to eating up miles on I-10 and I-25 using cruise control.

When you live in a metroplex like Dallas/Ft Worth you learn to ride on the interstate fairly quickly. You have to use the interstate for about 30-45 minutes just to get out to find back roads. Unfortunately the speed limits in Texas seem to be a suggestion and most drivers are going 10-15 over the limit. Also plenty of pickup trucks and 18 wheelers on the roads.
