Thank you for highlighting voices who rarely get platformed. Anybody leaving hate on this has some serious reflecting to do.

It's because of the way they are treated that I don't order from these apps. Some things matter more than convenience. Amazon announced that in the UK, Deliveroo orders will have free delivery for Prime members (which means basically everyone). Once again, and even more than now, consumers will see only the prices and the convenience, and totally ignore the human cost.

Thank you for shedding light on workers we don't often give a second thought to. The treatment of the workers by these apps, and the fees that they demand of the restaurants, is why I will never order through them. I'll call the restaurant directly and pick it up myself. No need to put anyone through this.

this doesnt really help the workers though, because they rely on orders to make money. they dont make minimum hourly wage

I’ve witnessed restaurants stealing their tips. In the Pinkberry in Hells Kitchen a delivery guy was asking to be paid out. The manager said to email the owner, but the delivery guy said the owner told him to talk to the manager. They owed him $300 and were giving the runaround.

The thefts of the electric bikes are awful, and I feel for them, but my question is--who is buying the stolen bikes? I have only ever seen delivery workers on electric bikes. Is the clientele for stolen bikes other delivery workers?

Yes, it must be. Nobody else is riding this particular brand (Arrow) but delivery drivers.

This is why I never order out in NYC. I feel bad for how overworked they can get.

Double edged sword. At the same time this is one of the only ways they can earn money to feed their kids back in Mexico.

Thousands of times per day in every city, why are you even pretending to be all like “are New Yorkers…” in whatever town you live in, your neighbor just stiffed a delivery person out of a tip. Happens every second of the day.

Interesting how you wait until 2/3 of the way through to reveal they are illegal immigrants who came here without any authorization and are operating under the radar. Almost every business in the country is hiring right now. Legal, English-speaking immigrants would have no trouble getting work at fast food, retail, or any number of chains and companies. If your goal isn't to try to mislead the public and be a good journalist, change your description to "What it's like to be an illegal New York City delivery worker."
@erifetim

They also could have left it out completely. Don't think they were really trying to hide the fact that illegal workers take over jobs Americans are unwilling to do.
@MikeKayK

The vast majority who work for these delivery apps are legal immigrants or US citizens. I know this from experience. Also, how about valuing the people who do this job? The usual "solution" of conservatives to just look for another job, completely misses the point. There is a societal need for this job and somebody's gotta do it. So why not value the people who do instead of maligning them? Also, way to point to fast food, retail and chain store jobs, that are routinely the most exploitative industries to work for. Those jobs are not really an improvement over doing deliveries, and again hundreds of thousands are needed to provide people like you their late night burgers when they drunkenly give opinions about how the economy works.
