I remember when Zip came out. I bought an external parallel port zip drive when they came out while in college. It was a monumental improvement over stacks of floppy disks between the university computer labs which had ethernet connections and my computer where i was living on campus which only had dial up. I upgraded to an external Jaz drive when it came out. I miss the sounds of the spinning mechanical drives.
Great video man, I really liked the stop motion stuff you did with the Zip drive and stuff. You could use a USB Zip 100 drive on a modern pc, and then go straight from modern pc to 486, skipping the win98 machine. Though USB external ZIP drives are rather hard to come across these days. But either way awesome job utilising old hardware!
Thank you - thought I'd try something new with the animation to make it more interesting - glad you liked it. Yes, have been looking around for a USB one, if I see one for a reasonable price then I might go for it :D
Very nice gadget! There were also internal Zip drives (floppy drive similiarly shapped). Capacites could reach 250MB each zip disk too, I own a Gatweway E-4200 600 which comes with an internal zip drive from factory.
Howdy - yeah I see that there is an internal 100mb drive on Australian ebay for $100 which is probably a little steep for my taste at the moment but it would definitely be a cool device to have (shame it wouldnt fit in my Packard Bell unless I swapped out the 3.5 floppy drive) :D
Nostalgia overload! Always admired these back in the day but never owned one. It's a perfect way to transfer onto machines without USB. You don't have to impress us with your stop motion skills, we love you just the way you are 😉 There's a few USB powered drives on the bay but postage from the UK might kill it. As said below it would be quicker. Enjoyed the vid as always.
hehe - good to hear from you. If I see a usb drive going cheaply locally then I will grab it. For now this will be fine :) Im halfway through getting a new (new to me anyway) 486 running so that should be the next video at some point. Will see if I can do a stop motion video with that! :D
Is it possible to connect the ZIP 100 parallel drive to a newer Windows than Windows 98SE, XP? Will it work on some new Linux distribution? Is it possible to connect via usb-parallel adapter or parallel controller under PCI port, PCI-e x1? The cable to connect is a simple straight DB25 cable like for a printer, has any pair of wires been changed?
I never tested a Parallel to USB converter though I believe that I have read on reddit that some people have managed to get them working. I imagine that if it can connect then later versions of windows should be able to use it. In the end I sold this to another collector here in Oz, but I still have an internal zip drive set up in one of my other retro PC's (though I dont tend to use it that much).
