Hope you all enjoyed this video! I really wish I could have used IPL footage in this vid, but it would have been copyrighted too quickly so decided to steer clear. Pls let me know who you think is going to win the IPL final tonight. I'm leaning towards GT currently but not counting out CSK.

Personally when I was kid I didn't enjoy test cricket as much but IPL got me stick with cricket as soon I began to understand and play cricket Test matches between two strong teams was the best thing for me. What I am trying to say is IPL and T20 helps cricket in getting teen audience which will later enjoy test matches more than anything.

Same thoughts plus ipl has somewhat worked to nurture the talent, players before going to international are exposed to pressure where all eyes are on you...we won the 4th test at gabba with one of the youngest bowling lineup india played with in few decades, so ipl does helps in gaining traction towards the game...now it's the ICC job to invite and help newer teams to emerge

Watched test cricket my whole life. It was Lara and Warne and it was the 90’s. Flamboyant and brilliant. There is no question T20 came along at the right time. The strength of test cricket is its extraordinary history. Adaption is key to survival. I heard Ross Brawn say that F1 needs to take a lesson from cricket. Pretty high praise. It is exciting to see the cricket format and cricket world open up. It’s exciting to see players reinvent the cricket rule book in terms of how to play the game. I just hope that T20 bosses don’t cultivate a corporate culture that ends up stifling players current level of creativity and courage.

I worry that fans and national boards in England and Australia are too busy saving test cricket that they miss the bigger picture of saving the whole game. 2-3 hour long games like soccer and AFL have taken over the mainstream sporting attention in the last 2 decades, while cricket is left to smaller and smaller "survival baised" crowd that only care about longer format. Ensuring cricket appeals to every kid growing up must be top priority for future of the game in these countries, format is secondary matter. Lord's is already having hard time selling out for international tests, and maybe by the end of this decade empty seats could be a common sight at games hosted in England and Australia, like they are in South Africa now.

IPL AND T20 CRICKET IN GENERAL HAS HAD A MORE NEGATIVE IMPACT ON ODI CRICKET COMPARED TO TEST CRICKET. OG CRICKET FANS ARE STILL IN AWE OF TEST CRICKET. EVERYONE IS EXCITED ABOUT THE WTC FINAL AND THE UPCOMING ASHES SERIE. ITS THE 50 OVER GAME THAT PEOPLE FIND BORING NOWADAYS. PEOPLE KNOW THAT YOU CAN'T TOUCH TEST CRICKET AND THEY KNOW THAT ITS EITHER 5 DAYS OR NOTHING. BUT ITS DIFFICULT FOR THEM TO WATCH OR FOLLOW A 50 OVER GAME WHICH GOES FOR 8-10 HOURS.

The only cricket which I think in danger is ODI, test cricket has its unique appeal but what is ODI? I mean i think we should just have two formats test and T20i, they both focus on extremes

I'm 35 now, grew upon watching Indian getting bashed in Caribbean with bouncers , Australia, England, New Zealand and South Africa with pace and swing.....it was great to the see the fighting spirit of our True Greats. IPL is a short path to success(Money and fame shortly ) but not skill and real experience. Even today I love to watch Test Matches where bowling and batting are equally entertaining while testing the skill and endurance of an athlete. Unfortunately, now in India selections are done based on IPL success, which makes Domestic format obsolete and utter disgrace...

I think IPL is the way forward if we want cricket to become a global sport rather than a post colonial english hangover, as players from non traditional countries can only play at IPL stage as their country teams aren't good enough, thus its the only way for new players to become and play at world class

Cricket needs to embrace more countries playing it. your netherlands, nepals, namibias, brazil womens, take them, work with them and maybe look into bring a few of them into the higher forms of the sport. If we insist on keeping ODI, expand the number of teams who can enter and make it simplier to qualify. And maybe help Afganistamd and ireland play more tests because the best way to get better is to play tests. The 5 day matches will never go away simply because countries still want to play it. I completely agree with you that it just needs to find a way to work with the IPL and T20.

Mate, love this video. Excellent and faultless analysis. If you’re open to feedback, I’d point out that the transitions between scenes, where the screen abruptly goes black, are a bit jarring and interrupt the super engaging flow of the video. Thank you for this work, it’s awesome.

Would you blame someone for leaving a job for a better job? If you would, then you’re not thinking straight. If these international boards can’t compete with the IPL, then they need to get better. Money talks… Besides, bazball wouldn’t exist without the IPL. Also, Odis are now shit because they use 2 new balls.

Great video, appreciate the analysis you’ve done. However, regarding the first point - smaller nations found it difficult to have test matches against the big 5 even before the IPL. I don’t necessarily agree that IPL is causing players to ditch the test opportunities

Its just really hard to imagine that a form of the game that requires 40 hours of fan investment over a 5 day period for a single match is going to to anything buy lose popularity moving forward compared to a format that takes ~3 hours.

imagine in a parallel world where the rules of cricket r sorta like this: ICC gets to decided the international tours and whatever, and they set everything like this: During WTC, every team plays exactly 18 games, 9 home and 9 away and they'll play based of series. For example: Australia could play a home Ashes series, mean they play 5 home, then next home season, they could play a 4 match series, or two 2 match serieses, or they could play an one-off match and a 3 match series. Teams will be based thru points, and if 2 teams are equal on points, they will be separated based on other factors. ICC will reach an agreement with boards and will decide who plays who. The WTC will take place between 8 teams with the bottom team potentially facing relagation. However the agreement will make sure the big serieses like the Ashes, BGT, Wisden Trophy will still take place (if none of these teams get relegated). While this happenes, ICC could grant test status to 2 more nations, potentially Scotland and Netherlands, therefore 6 teams will play a WTC 2nd div, where the winner will get promoted to the WTC in the next edition/cycle. While this happens to Test cricket, ODI and T20 cricket will get changes too. Between every ICC CWC years, each team will play 40 ODI games, 20 leading up to the Champions Trophy, and then 20 leading up to the next Cricket World Cup. These 20 games could either serve as a qualification to the WC or CT, or serve as like a Cricket Nations League or could be both. Same could go for T20 cricket, except, the T20 WC happens every 2 yrs, each team will play 20 T20Is leading up to the WC. Once again ICC will have control over this, they will sorta decide who plays who while keeping boards sorta happy while making the decisions. The cricket world cup will see changes, it'll be a 16 team world cup divided into 4 groups of 4, with the top 2 teams from each group qualifying to a 2nd stage forming 2 groups of 4, this time the top 2 teams will qualify for the semis and so on. The champions trophy will also see an increase to 10 teams divided into 2 groups of 5. The T20I will be 20 teams divided into 4X5. What this does is that, even tho there's less international games, it increases the stakes of these international game, something to play for, even if it's not the world cup. While doing this however......ICC could invent a new format of cricket, it'll be a 2 day cricket match, each day will have 80 overs, and a team will bat in all of day 1 in 80 overs, set a target, then the chasing team will chase it down the next day within 80 overs. If the chasing team fails to chase it down, then rather than the game being a draw, the team tht set the target will win. ICC could set a league for this with 12 teams divided into 2 groups of 6, each team in the group playing the other twice, therefore by the time the group stages are done, each team will have played 10 games. Then the top 2 teams from each group will go to the semis. The league could run from September to May, each team prolly playing 2 matches during each month except for March and April (since they host the IPL, while i think Feb hosts the PSL), then at May the final could take place, something similar to the UCL final in Europe. The tournament could host in the UAE, as temperatures during spring and winter shouldn't be that hot, and it wont prolly rain as much). The tournament will bring players from all countries, including players from non test playing nations too. While all of this is happening, the T20 franchise leagues can take place, and will rather be told or asked by the ICC to make the tournaments shorter, therefore giving players some time to rest. Basically what i have in mind is, decrease the total number of international games drastically, but also raising the stakes, allowing all the T20 franchise leagues to posper but make them shorter too, atleast interms of days, then make a league where u create a format sorta mixing all the formats together (trying to respect Test cricket). I feel like this will allow all of cricket's formats to stay together and create a balance.

For someone who grew up watching baseball and moved to Australia with my parents. I am sorry to say this, but I don't give two shits about Test Cricket. I enjoy T20 Cricket because it is fun to watch. Test Cricket is even more boring than baseball. Now, think of migrants who were not exposed to a bat and ball game when they were young unlike me. Would they be interested in Test Cricket? Not at all. Test Cricket is an outdated and obsolete form of cricket that is bound to die out eventually. I think IPL and T20 cricket in general still have some room for improvement in comparison to MLB. I want the Cricket world to focus on those issues rather than Test Cricket & ODI.

I've always compared cricket with motorsport in that regard. It's far more easier to have a bunch of GTs and Supercars and Stock Cars around the world, but you can only have a handful of Le Mans and Daytonas and Nürburgrings. It's just not for everyone.

I would much rather franchise cricket than international cricket, the closer to the football model the better. In a world where even football is considering reducing time, romanticising test cricket is a futile exercise, not many have time to follow test matches and the revenue they bring compared to T20 is a joke. Cricket gets as many eyes as it does, is mostly because of the sub continent, otherwise it would just be another odd sport played by the English and those they colonised. Either cricket evolves or gets left behind other sports it’s as simple as that. T20 is a superb innovation, which cricket needs to milk in order to stay relevant, if that means Tests and ODIs get left behind, then fine. I would pay good money to watch T20 leagues played in different countries throughout the world with the best players and a World Cup with more countries every 3-4 years.
