I grew up in southern Oklahoma during this time period. These boys were gods to us kids. I got to see Kevin, Kerry, Mike, and Chris live several times. I never saw David wrestle because he was dead by the time I got into it all. When Mike killed himself, it was horrific. When Chris killed himself, it was like a nightmare. Then, when Kerry killed himself it was just completely shocking and sad. We all were just waiting for Kevin to die at that point, and luckily, he managed to survive. Leaving Chris out of this story is incredibly disrespectful. Chris was very short, with asthma and brittle bones. Yet, he loved wrestling even more than his brothers or Fritz did. He wrestled as a tag team partner of Mike's against Percy Pringle and Stone Cold Steve Austin. All he ever wanted was to measure up to his brothers, but he was physically unable to do so. He was left out in life, and now he's being left out in death. That's horrible. I still want to see this film, but the Chris exclusion pisses me off.

the whole story is tragic. I started watching WCCW about a year before David died in Japan. so by that time I was already a fan of the Von Eric's. His death hurt. then over years it was suicide after suicide. Kevin being the last man standing. I couldn't imagine living with that pain in your heart every day. RIP Von Eric Brothers.

Kevin always seemed like he was the leader back when I watched them on Tv. Kevin was the leader, Kerry was the muscle, Mike was the young protege brother & David was the fallen legend. Fritz would show up occasionally and I never understood why he was getting attention away from the wrestlers. Was the best time to watch pro wrestling compared to today.

Something often overlooked is the wrestling scene before the Von Erich brothers. You had barrel chested, grizzled, older journeymen topping the cards. Dimly lit arenas. No ring music. And minimal story line focus. World Class came along and put lights everywhere, put mics under the ring. And put cameras right up on the wrestlers. And had some of the most memorable storylines in all of wrestling history. Suddenly the Von Erich brothers became the prototypes for what promoters all over the world began looking for. They were game changers. They deserve to have their story told. I can't wait to see it. I don't like that they wrote Chris out. I'm assuming they go Kevin's blessing. I won't let it affect my opinion of the movie. That's just how I feel.

The director said it was the toughest decision of his career, and that there just wasn’t enough time in 2 hours to put a whole other character in, also his “arc” was so similar to Mikes, and that the audience wouldn’t be able to handle ANOTHER brother dying
@lamarRichardIII

The director said he kept him out because it would be too tragic, and worried people wouldn’t believe it. Which I understand but I wish he did. The movie was great. Had me, and my two friends who don’t watch wrestling crying. Cast was solid, and it really makes you appreciate your family, and loved ones.

Being someone who knew the story prior to films release, I thought I’d be more upset about Chris being excluded. But after seeing the film, I think they did a really solid job of infusing his spirit into the character of Micheal. So while Chris may not have been in the film physically, the character of Micheal gives the best quality of each brother. Was incredibly pleased with how the whole story was handled.

I became a Von Erich fan sometime after David passed. Kerry was my favorite and pretty much still is (in my heart). The Von Erich's didn't wrestle much in the Houston, Tx area. However!!! When I saw that Kerry was scheduled to wrestle in Houston, I was like!! I'm there!!! In the early 90's I had the privilege of meeting Kerry at the grocery store. He was a very nice and super friendly (🥰😍) To this day, I still have his autograph! And then when the news came out about Kerry, I was so heartbroken!! I was heartbroken with everything that happen to this family. People compare the brothers to the Kennedy family. I've always said they are like the Bee Gee's. Both Kevin and Barry are the only ones left!! Kevin said after the primer here in Dallas, that he truly loved the movie. And that they got it right!! So I'm looking forward to seeing it! For me leaving Chris out, really is okay. Chris had alot of health issues and was kinda in and out of the ring. Bless his heart, he tried. He just wanted to be with his brothers and just couldn't do it!

Lots to unpack in this movie... I didn't know anything about the Von Erichs or the curse so watching the movie was so intense for me. Every time something happened was really hard for me to watch without feeling like I was going to cry. At the last 5 minutes of the film I couldn't hold it back anymore. Such a good movie I highly recommend it.

I think stories like this should be a two part movie so scenes can breathe and they can build up to other events gradually. With the way you explained it the writers and directors could have just been more patient. I know it’s going to be a good movie regardless though. I still can’t wait to see the film

I only recently learned about the Von Erichs through Dark Side of the Ring. I got into wrestling in the early 2000s so by then WCW was gone and Vince pretty much ran everything. I knew about Hulk and Andre and all those guys of course but my knowledge of the territories was limited. The documentary was heartbreaking to watch. Very excited to see this movie.

I lived in Dallas during the height of the Von Erich's popularity, watching WCCW every week on a local TV channel. When I saw the trailer, as soon as I saw the title, I knew exactly who it was about. I am looking forward to seeing the movie but I know that it is going to a emotional ride for me knowing already the tragedies. I did see an interview with Kevin in Hawaii and if he was happy with the film, I know I will be. I can understand why they didn't include Chris in the story. Yes he was their brother but he wasn't a part of wrestling because of medical conditions.

ABSOLUTELY gonna see this movie next week!! Never got the chance to watch WCCW when I was a kid, but would buy wrestling magazines and read about the Von Erichs...around the time that Mike had passed (so articles were comparing him to David) and Chris was trying so hard to take on the family biz. And then Kerry moved to the WWF, but they would NOT call him a Von Erich nor let him use the Claw as his finisher. Then Chris passed (again, all I could watch was WWF so I learned this through wrestling mags) and, honestly, I grew out of my desire to watch pro wrestling. Not sure how I heard of Kerry's death...might not have been until Dark Side of the Ring doc! I can understand them leaving Chris Von Erich out of this film. We're talking about almost every son/brother passing away...and in real life, not fiction. There's only so much tragedy that can be portrayed without movie goers just walking out. I do think the cumulative effect of blow upon blow upon blow was a factor in this family's downward spiral. The perseverance of Kevin Adkisson, enduring so much grief and so much loss in his life is inspiration to everyone going through anything. Can't wait to see this movie!

As a kid that grew up in North Texas and knew the story, movie was well done. I mainly wanted to see for the nostalgia effect. If the movie was gonna tell all it would have to be 4 hours long, and all would need therapy after seeing it. But several times while watching the film I was a 10 year old kid again!

I've been waiting on this movie for over a year. It sux that they left out Chris. Kerry was very close to Chris, when you see old footage of the family, Kerry and Chris are always together posing, lifting weights and hanging out. Kevin is truly inspiring as a man, and as a father. To survive these tragedies and come out the other side with such strength and grace and to have such a loving attitude is truly remarkable. I hope this film breaks all the box office records but ultimately I can't wait to see it!

Having listened to the Lapsed Fan podcast's series on this whole Von Erich tragedy, one of the things I was really looking for in this film was something I was glad got highlighted: the despicable sequence where Mike, having clearly suffered in his mental capacity in the aftermath of his coma, was nonetheless thrust in front of the cameras to assure everyone that he was going to be getting back in the ring in no time. I thought the portrayal of Fritz here was tremendous, and was actually my personal choice for best acting job (with plenty of respect to the other actors as well). He nailed the role, and it's obviously a crucial role to making the film work.

With respect... Chris's life , although tragic, did not have any significant impact on the business. We, the fans, did not have the same connection . Plus, by the time of his passing, we were kinda numb. In truth, it could have a movie on each of the wrestling brothers. Or a series.

They left out Chris. His story was important. He was too small but he still went and he tried so hard. His bones were brittle and he really wanted to because wrestler but he had a disease his bones broke. He realized that his dreams of being a pro wrestler were over. He blew his brains out in the barn. I can only imagine Jeremy Allen White as Jerry must be insane. I think this movie is really gonna shock anyone who is in cold and never heard of the Von Erich story. Be prepared.

The 1980 Summer Olympic Games in Moscow, USSR, was not cancelled. The United States boycotted it in response to the USSR’s invasion of Afghanistan in 1979. The USSR responded by boycotting the 1984 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles, California. In 1985, Ted Turner arranged to hold the 1986 Goodwill Games in Atlanta, Georgia, which included both the US and the USSR, and other international sports teams. It was a big success.

Chris Von Erich is understandably cut out to me. He had a health issue where his bones break easier than most people but his dad made him wrestle anyway. Kevin was also the one who found Chris the night he ended himself. Being that the story from is from Kevin’s point of view and knowing he’ll actually see the movie. Kevin Von Erich worked his way towards the top but it comes with a burden of struggles also losing his brothers. Was tough to get through in Life for him. Seeing the legendary Wrestling competitors portrayed made it worthwhile. 4.5/5 ✨✨✨✨

I missed Chris too. I just watched The Van Erich Family on RU-vid featuring Kevin Von Erich and his telling of what happened within the family, including the first born brother, Jack. This is how I found out about the movie. But after listening to some of the reviews (not the trailers, yet), I want to see it but feel there's disappointment that will come with it. And leaving out Chris confused me because I knew there were 6 boys. They even included a picture of Jack, which is cool, but leaving off Chris--I'm not feeling that at all. I hope Kevin or a wrestling historian write a book on this family. But how can I give a true opinion if I don't watch the movie. Thank you for your review, it's enlightening.

Mike and Chris died similar deaths 4 years apart. Director stated he kind combined them into Mike character. Yes they crunched timeline of events a lot. I enjoyed film and I agree that hindered storytelling. A mini series 45 min. - 1 hr. 3 eps. to 5 eps. or an 8 ep. season would have enhanced the telling of events and Von Erich story.

I saw this the other night and enjoyed it. I grew up in the mid 70s and Kevin Von Erich was who I liked. Then he sort of disappeared and Kerry took center stage and I was rooting for him. Once he died, I lost interest in wrestling. That said, once I found out that there was another brother who was completely removed from the film, I felt cheated. I thought, "man, what did he do that was so bad as to get cut from his family's film?" Then I read up, as you did, and discovered that the suicide was too similar to Kerry's suicide and for pacing it had to be cut. So the Director merged Mike and Chris into one character. Besides, the movie probably would have had to be 30 or 45 minutes longer to flesh that character out. When you read up on Chris...in many ways, his situation was FAR worse than Mike's. He had severe asthma and the medication he took stunted his growth by a LOT! He was only 5'4" and his bones were extremely brittle as a result. He simply couldn't do the wrestling work because he would break his bones doing even the most simple tasks like drop kicks. Trying to live with the Father's pressure to perform and the loss of his older Brothers, he couldn't escape the darkness. The movie was already hitting hard by the end...adding another suicide might have been a tough watch.

Gotta give it up to Chavo Guerrero. The way he trained and converted these actors into believable legit wrestlers. It did move quickly, and like you said that they didn't even cover Chris. I honestly wouldn't have mind this becoming a 3+hr film because of how much they didn't delve into. Something else they didn't bring up and a lot of people didn't know about Kerry was that nobody outside the family knew he was missing a foot from the accident. That's how talented he was.

Excellent movie. Zac as Kevin should garner him a few nominations. A little surprised that they excluded Chris (I understand why) and the fake cousin Lance that marked the downfall of WCCW in the late 80s. Heartbreaking but also inspiring. Chris was much younger than his brothers. I understand why they left him out. Showing a very young boy struggling with all that would have been bad. Seeing any of the boys deaths just too much. It was painful enough as it was. But the part where the boys were together in the afterlife gave insight on their great love for one another. May the entire Adkisson family rest in peace.

But they managed to include the little brother who passed when they were a little boy. I feel as though, they could have found a way to Include him in my opinion.

@@MovieFiles The first born little boy did not go through Fritz's treatment. It would have to have been written differently for Chris, but it could have been done. I did not want to see Chris suffering along at the young age, especially with his health issues.

Chris missing is glaring. Because it broke Kerry. His spiral happened after Chris passed, and it isn't a coincidence that they ended their journey almost identical. The director has now come out and said it was because it was too sad, which I still don't get. It was a story of 6 brothers.

Recently saw the movie and it was not as good as I wanted it to be. I knew of the Von Erich's tragedies many years ago as I was a fan of Kerry Von Erich. When I saw the preview for the movie, I was so excited and knew that I would be going to see it. Then I heard that Chris Von Erich was not even mentioned in it and I thought that was strange, given that there were six brothers, why would they not mention one of them. After watching the movies, I was disappointed. Like I said, I have known of and read about the Von Erich's and their tragedies since the late 1980's and especially once Kerry passed in 1993. The movie doesn't even address the fact that Kerry was married and had children. Maybe if I didn't know the story (although we will probably never know everything), I would feel differently about the movie, but knowing what I know and that so much was missing, the movie was not good.

I agree it was weird the left out Chris, but i also understand why. Like I had seen Durkin saying, it wasnt just timing, but also, he felt that including Chris would make the story seem too unbelievable. Its already on the edge, its hard to believe how much tragedy this family endured, and I can see how(knowing the story) including Chris could've made audience feel like the story was embellished. I also think the movie was trying to slowplay Fritz a lot, and i think including Chris would've made it hard for the audience to connect with the brothers in a way. Because Fritz was SO HARD on Chris, i think it would've taken away that bit of understanding the audience has that regardless of how abusive emotionally Fritz was to them, that he was still their father and they loved him and wanted him to be proud of them. I wish they got more into Fritz as a person also, for example the "reason" why the curse was thought to be a thing is said in the movie to be "Because he used the Von Erich name". In Actuality Friz portrayed a Nazi gimmick, in the late 40s to mid 50s, when WW2 and the holocaust was fresh in everyone's mind. The story goes that the curse was a sort of cosmic penance(or revenge from the souls of holocaust victims) for Fritz essentially making light of such a serious thing. It would've been super easy to go into the litany of shitty things fritz did, like for example, after the death of david and mike having a fake heart attack in the ring after a beatdown by the freebirds, as an attempt to get them over as vicious badguys. Obviously this backfired and lost the trust of a lot of fans, they didnt want Fritz exploiting his real life tragedy just to get over wrestling. Even they realized it was bigger than that. But if you go into that it kinda undercuts the family story. Makes it harder for the audience to relate to the brothers.

9/10 not knowing about wrestling definitely helps because each death was shocking because i didn’t know the story they got the cast perfect every actor has had their best performance in this movie would be perfect outside of them glossing over some parts that could’ve taken more time it was 2 hours but that flew by could’ve made it 3 hours went more in depth on some key events and everyone would’ve been fine with it

Going to the fact, that Zac Efron is 5’,8” tall plain Kevin , who is 6’2”. Tall is probably why they left out Chris. In real life, Chris was 5‘5“ tall In order to make Zac Efron look like he was 6‘2” tall they would probably need somebody who is 5 feet tall to Chris

I watched it today,,,since I lived it, I didn't break down as much.....Of course the movie completely leaves out Chris Von Erich..It also bypassed the Deaths of WCCW's version of the Rock ( Gino Hernandez was the Rock before the Rock) and Bruiser Brody ( who was their main Antihero, similar to the Undertaker) so it was actually a lot more drama that was really behind WCCW. WCCW was really the company that inspired the attitude era. WCCW was Attitude before the Attitude Era.

From what I gathered from not seeing the film yet, they had Lance Von Erich in the film (although, that is key to telling the story) but not Chris is interesting indeed. At the same time, then the movie, I would assume, would have to talk about the death of the World Class territory, the failed merger with "Memphis Territory" USWA and the American Wrestling Association, and possibly Global Wrestling Federation (along with a few other tried Texas wrestling revivals). That, and the inclusion of Chris in the film would most likely make an already tragic story that much more tragic.

Leaving Chris out was crappy, I get it for timing purposes and his time really was at the end of the Von Erichs time in the spot light, but I feel they could work him in as a kid, showing him hanging around with minimal story, and adding a tag line at the end about his passing as the final nail in that era, followed by another line about Kevins sons carrying on the family legacy, something like that, without disrupting the story that was being told.

I read that the director left out chris because he thought it was too sad to have another brother die. Especially chris who desperately wanted to wrestle like his dad and brothers but didn't have the body for it

Imo its depicted as being just that life continues to go on and while many should and would take time to cope.. someone dies and life jhst goes on. Time doesnt even give much time to heal and they press forward... then another death. Time to process and life going on only processed in segments. Flashes.

I think it is a big criticism that they left out Chris from the movie, im disapointed. Chris and Mike were real close brothers, Chris looked up to Mike, He wanted to be a wrestler too, but he was only 5'5 and he new deep down it wasn't going to happen for him. He did wrestle a little bit, but it was only for short appearances. Mike didn't really take it seriously because he loved his music, but he did it more so to please his Dad. When Mike died from an overdose suicide. Chris took his own life too and shot himself. I think Kevin is probably disappointed that Chris was not mentioned in the movie, like he didn't exist. I know I would be.

Just saw it today. Decent movie but the real story is way better and more interesting. The timeline in the movie is way off. Zack Efron was really good in the movie. He showed everyone that he's a good dramatic actor. All of the actors hit the gym hard before filming and are all pretty jacked. They learned to wrestle in the ring and it shows in the movie.

There's not much. I don't know about these guys. I'm a huge fan. I wear my Kerry von. Eric t-shirt with pride. There is actually two brothers so I don't know if they're going to talk about the first brother who is actually the oldest over. Kevin Jack Jr. He didn't die from wrestling. He died as a little kid in a freak accident and then there was Chris von. Eric and I felt that they should talk about the whole family and explain kind of what happened cuz it's really important in Chris is very important to the boys so I'm excited to see it. I'm glad they finally did it. Fritz has been hidden from a lot of people. He had this fake image but people that were around him really new people spoke out on it but not to a massive level. So to see him be exposed for pushing his kids and everything like that is really refreshing to see because he caused the downfall of those boys and from Bam Bam Bigelow to Bret Hart to many others. They all express that that you know Fritz really messed up those boys and covered for them and made up stuff and all all kinds of things. It's just a mess so I'm glad to see this movie come out. I'll be the first one there. Super excited!

Removing Chris was stupid. I find it kind of disrespectful, to be honest. And whilst I understand the reason why, at the end of the day, as you mentioned in terms of the montage of matches and achievements of the Von Erichs and their usage of substances, I think they should have turned it into a series rather than a movie. Chris' death was an important factor in Kerry's death - Chris idolised Kerry in particular and Kerry knew this, making Chris' death-along with the accident-tough for Kerry to deal with.

Chris is not in the film??!! That's just weird!!! Chris is an integral part of this tragic story. Hearing nothing but great things about The Iron Claw, but as a long-time wrestling fan and very familiar with this tragic story, I may have a different take, will absolutely see this as soon as can, but really? Based on a true story and you write out one of the actual Von Erich Brothers?
