A not so fun fact, Brad Bird made the film in memory of his sister, Susan, who died due to gun violence at the hands of her husband. His pitch for the movie was "what if a gun had a soul and didn't want to be a gun?"
@@hcoyhis Violence. Interesting how any other Violence like beaten to death, stabbing, strangled, poisoned, we say Violence but somehow because a tool was used that happened to be a gun we specifically say gun violence. A gun is just a tool. Gun violence is just a political term by anti gun people.
- It's bad to kill, but it's not bad to die. - You die? - Well, yes, someday. - I die? - I don't know. You're made of metal, but you have feelings, and you think about things, and that means you have a soul. And souls don't die.
There is a deleted scene that's now available in some versions of the movie, called the "Giant's Vision" where when the Giant falls asleep his dreams interfere with a TV broadcast. Dean wakes up to see Giant's nightmare on TV. It's implied to be his past experiences as a planet conquering machine. It's debatable whether it improves the movie to include it. It would justify Mansley's fear of the robot and its makers. But on the other hand, it would show how impactful it is that the Giant refuses to be what he was made to be.
The sequence is well done, but it really does kill the later surprise reveal that the Giant is inherently a war machine. Sometimes you just have to cut material that you love. Editing can be harder than shooting.
It's just so criminal that this movie is underrated, overlooked, and underappreciated given how it's just such a good story. I love how the Iron Giant can show emotion and begin to experience human feelings like joy, sadness, grief, fear, anger, and peace, giving him more character development than most of the human characters. Brad Bird did an excellent job directing this movie, I can see why he was picked for directing the Incredibles. Thank you Sophie, for uploading this movie!
The details in this film are just perfect. It is set in 1957 (Coincidentally the year I was born!) and the satellite was Sputnik 1 - the first satellite ever, launched by the USSR in October. Hence it is Fall/Autumn in the Northern Hemisphere and why everyone is somewhat paranoid about the Russians. If you look at the mantel in Hogarth's room you'll sea picture of a man, dressed as a pilot standing beside his F-86 Sabre, a jet used in the Korean war. (1949-53) so that is why there is no father in the house - His mom was widowed. The rifle he has is a Daisy BB gun, which was hugely popular throughout the 50s and sixties. And yes, Atomic War drills and films were also commonplace at schools in that era. Also, read the cast list - there are a number of well known voices, eg Vin Diesel voiced the Giant and Jennifer Aniston was Hogarth's Mother.
The guy voicing the gov. agent you hate was played by Christopher McDonald who also played another excellent villain in the movie Happy Gilmore, (Shooter McGavin). When an actor can make you hate them, it's proof they know how to act well enough to draw that emotion out of you.
This movie was absolutely incredible, and showed just how good Brad Bird is, at storytelling. It makes me so upset that this was a huge flop at the box office and the reason why it did was because Warner Bros. marketed it very poorly and Quest for Camelot bombed and critically disappointed. It really deserves a second chance at life, just like Treasure Planet and Atlantis. It’s just one of those movies everyone should watch.
Treasure Planet, Atlantis, Brother Bear, The Iron Giant… so many animated gems that deserve so much love, and I feel so bad for the team. They really were something special.
The "duck and cover" part is based on real "educational" films from the 50s they showed in American schools. Looks ridiculous for us today but I guess it gave the people some security in those times of global tension
@@gwivongalois6169 Most of the damage done by a nuclear bomb is the shockwave but it depends on the bomb. Some are designed to have a smaller explosion but will shower a target in neutron radiation. In that case duck and cover wouldn't save someone as they are literally torn apart on the molecular level.
I guess that's what the general was referring to when he said "There's no way to survive this YOU IDIOT!" Berating Mansley for actually believing that load of bull.
kinda reminds me of the active shooter drills we did in school when I was growing up. In elementary school they tried to make it into a 'fun' step-by-step thing so we would memorize what to do lol
I always cry with this movie, I watched this since I was on kindergarten and now I’m 24, I still cry like a baby every time he says Superman at the end ❤
Sophie: "I feel weird calling him giant" Literally every character in the movie calls him "The Giant" or "Giant" and he's credited as "Iron giant". 😂😂😂
It is important to discuss the similarities between The Iron Giant and Gigantor. Both were constructed as weapons of war, both are connected to young boys and both can fly. There aren't enough similarities to sue for copyright, but as a kid that watched Gigantor 50 years ago, I can't help but notice how they are alike. The Iron Giant basically finds his zen through Hogarth, but Gigantor is constantly battling American scientists with German accents. This was on purpose as the animators felt that German scientists captured at the end of World War 2 got a free pass, as compared to Japanese scientists. Both did horrible things to humans, but because the German scientists were knowledgeable about rockets, and a rocket (and space) race was gearing between the US and USSR, the German scientists were used for their knowledge, whereas the Japanese scientists were (for the most part) executed for their crimes against humanity. As a kid, you want a big protector, someone to look up to, and a giant robot fills that bill quite well.
7:18 - That was real advice that was given out to ease people's fears about atomic war. The government gave people false hope of survival because they didn't want people facing the reality that if WW3 broke out they were all unrelentingly screwed. 21:27 - You have to remember that this was a time when the Cold War was making everyone in the US paranoid about potential attacks from Russia. Then this guy finds out that a multi-story, nigh-indestructible robot capable of taking out a power station and eat metal has appeared in a rural town? Almost like... say... a weapons test on a remote part of the country? The extremes of his actions are a reflection of the fears of the time period.
This was a really good reaction. Youre a lot of fun. I'm a grown man... older than dirt, and I still love this movie. This and How To Train Your Dragon are right at the top.
My mom introduced me to this movie when I was younger and I’m so glad she did, can’t believe how long ago that was tho it was like when I was 7(im 18 now🥲) but everytime I watch this movie I cry🥺 this movie really is amazing
It's so weird that the Giant landed in Iceland which makes me want to connect this movie to Atlantis : The Lost Empire, because Milo found out that the book he was looking for was in Ice Land and the Iron Giant kinda looks like the Stone Giants that protect Atlantis near the end.
Sophie: I've never even heard of this movie before Me: wait, what? 😲 Sophie: Is this a cult classic or something? Me: YES 😂 seriously how have you not even heard of this?? But I loved your reactions! I always enjoy your first time watching videos, especially when you watch favorites of mine! Sorry I missed this last week 💜💜💜
No joke, I’m taking a film appreciation class in college rn and even my professor, someone whose job is to basically know movies didn’t know about this movie. Really did shock me 😂
16:00 you can tell Hogarth isn't ADHD because coffee hypes him up so much, as an ADHD kid caffeine just mellows me out, I just can't comprehend caffeine jitters people talk about, it just calms me so much.
The usual review of this movie is "i never heard of it.", "it's about a robot, eh?", "well, let's watch.", "*crying at 'Superman!'", "why have i NEVER heard of this INCREDIBLE MOVIE?!" 🤭 And yes, i also did not watch it in the cinema, i watched it years later on the telly.
"The Iron Giant": The animated movie of two Sputnik/Cold War 1999 movies. (The other movie is "October Sky," about the early life od NASA scientist Homer Hickam Jr. and The Rocket Boys.) The Iron Giant's last conversation gets to me: "Hogarth, you stay. I go. No following."
I asked my mom when we were watching this movie “would you be scared if you saw the Iron Giant in the forest near your house? And she surprisingly said no and I had a the most surprised look on my face😮
1:03 True, like in meet the Robinsons, It takes place in 1937, And Not only don’t we have flying cars or futuristic tech, But Also it’s the hundredth Anniversary. 2:38 I didn’t even get that as a kid. Tarzan did too this film, Tarzan is nice too.
I lived in the 2000s at around Hogarth's age in a rural area, and I was given a gun for target shooting basically, and the occasional hunting trip with my parents. I was taught that you never muzzle sweep someone, never point it at anything you don't intend to shoot and/or kill, and treat every one as if it were loaded. I don't even own a gun right now since I don't need one. Reasonable people who used guns as kids exist! They were always a very dangerous tool and one slip up would not only possibly hurt someone I cared about, but would get any privileges to use them taken forever. Never had an accident and my parents never feared I would. No guns in your home is okay! But I think it's important to know how they work and at least understand the basic idea of hunting even if you never kill a thing in your life. It's just survival skills! Though actually it's life skills if you live really north on the North American continent too. Moose and bear will kill you and they walk into towns all the time up there.
0:55 Fun fact: despite the fact that Sputnik 1 was highly polished it was quite hard to see with the naked eye. It was much easier to see the rocket stage that delivered the satellite into orbit and that was what most people saw.
Again another amazing reaction! You should definitely check out "Underverse" by Jael Peñaloza on youtube. It's a series that I think you'd enjoy, it has an interesting plot and great animation. Besides I haven't seen to many reactions around it so it would be great!
Great video! It says something that I did this one also this week so I've seen it about five times now in the process, and I still loved every second of your video. The movie is THAT good.
Thats the old American spirit, we don’t back down from shit, something invades ur territory don’t matter u arm up to defend it and go after it, it’s a man thing (just wanna see what happens 😅)
Welcome to the greatest hidden gym on planet Earth The only movie that can make everybody cry no matter if you've watched it 20 times I still tear up at that ending scene Glad you enjoyed the movie for what it is it is a cult classic everybody wants a sequel I've been waiting my entire life for a sequel to come out and it still hasn't happened since I was 17 old The first time I watched it on accident
Y'know, as adorable as the Iron Giant is, its existence implies there's an alien species out there capable of manufacturing these kinds of autonomous weapons that can survive a point-blank nuclear blast.
If weird, out-there ideas for movies interest you, watch Osmosis Jones. It's from the same studio as this. It's a very weird movie and general audience reactions to it are all over the place. I would love to see your reaction to it.
21:11 It is difficult. Of course i dont know like anyone else whatever will happen after death. But i believe it really isnt so necessary to dig so deep with souls, heaven, hell and spirits or more. To calm or fear the idea of something very hard like this. Its sure creative but for me is the death simply just death. And noting else we can only tell but never fully prove at all.
This whole time the townspeople were afraid of a nuclear attack, and the only time a bomb was dropped it was by their own govt. The irony is sickening.
There's actually a good reason why love The iron giant even though you can't understand him... Because Vin Diesel voiced him, and he also voiced groot. You identify with him even though you can't understand him.
Hi I really love your reaction I know that you normally not react to movies but I think this is a really good movie the name's movie is train to busan is a really good movie.
You should definitely check out Disney’s Dinosaur (2000) at some point, for it too is an underrated gem like this movie in its own right despite what others might say about it
Sophie I have something to tell you I actually have a Lego Iron Giant big figure I got on eBay for my birthday last year it's really cool be happy to show you one day.
It's amazing watching the generational differences. Things like climbing on the roof of your house and having a BB gun as a kid makes you a "superhero" as opposed to just an ordinary kid?
This movie ain't no gem, It's F-ing DIAMOND ! ;-; Even if the ending with the giant repairing itself seems wrapped up... I think the real ending didn't include this scene but yeah, I understand why they made it this way ^^
There is a video game called multiversus that include different properties from WB including, dc comics cartoons, scooby doo and the iron giant... only thing i care about that game is thay it allowed the iron giant to meet superman.
I don't know if you've already seen it, but could you do a Lemonade Mouth reaction? It has an amazing soundtrack. In my opinion is one of the best DCOM of all time
