The Island Railway to the Coast - Newport to Sandown Part 1 Isle of Wights Railways
Join me as I take a look at one of the Isle of Wight lost railways, the route from Newport to Sandown.
In part one of this Disused Railway Walk I take a look at Shide Tunnel, Chalk Quarry and Station.
Then it's onto Blackwater Station, Merstone Junction Station before finishing off at Horringford Station

Thank you for the super video from the Isle of Wight. Haven't been there since 1959 and the video makes me want to return. We had a day trip to the Island while on holiday in Southsea 64 years ago and took the train from Ryde Pierhead to Ventnor. It was the first time I can remember hearing a Westinghouse brake pump chugging away on number 33 "Bembridge" and what was left of the railways on the Island was all steam operated. The IoW steam railway have two locos that I have worked with so you've given me a great excuse to go and see them! Also to take a bike and ride some trails and see what's left of the track beds for myself. I just hope we can get some decent weather as it looks great in the video! Keep the videos going Ant, you're doing a great job.

Another great video. You implied that Shide station building was still there. It was demolished and a garage built on the site.

Another great vid Ant . It's awful but I have never walked any of the old lines , so bad . Must do it . Guessing you avoided the tricky identifying of the railway in the center of Newport , it's a dual carriageway . All completely wiped from the face of the earth .

Ant, you really seem to enjoy making videos, and they are extremely enjoyable. But have a question: Do you consider "exercise" as a side benefit from all the walking you do??? Until your Isle of Wight video series I never knew how beautiful it was, what a place to live.

I walked the old line back in the early 80's. If memory serves me correctly Merstone Junction was much more overgrown back then, with the now tarmacked path being nothing more than a narrow path through the undergrowth. The platforms were also very overgrown. Very nice to see them still there 40 years on from when I walked the line. Will make one correction to the info you gave regarding the line splitting at Merstone, the line that went off towards Godshill was not the same line that went to Wroxhall. The branch through Godshill went south to Whitwell, then through the tunnel you explored previously to Ventnor West station. Wroxhall was on the line that used to continue onwards from Shanklin westwards through Wroxhall, then through the much longer tunnel under St Boniface Down, emerging straight into the main Ventnor Station. (The old track bed from Shanklin to Wroxhall is a footpath itself, but sadly the long tunnel under the downs is now locked up very securely.

Forgot to ask: Do any of the rivers have enough "Fall" to have worked waterwheels in the past?
@johnspurgeon9083
@johnspurgeon9083 10 месяцев назад
I think what tends to happen is that a separate watercourse is driven, with a minimal fall. By the time the wheel is reached there is sufficient drop to power the wheel. The water then forms a mill race to get back to the main river downstream.
@jetsons101
@jetsons101 10 месяцев назад
@@johnspurgeon9083 My guess would be that Undershot and Breastshot were more common than overshot waterwheels. Have a good day...........

Most lines on the island were not profitable and relied mainly on seasonal traffic. Then the introduction of buses spelt the end of nearly all the island lines. This is what most nostalgists fail to understand.

@TrekkingExploration ...Even before I found this out, I found this was a nssty place to be. Then there's the horse and carriage that dashes across the road at Knighton and just disappears.. The park at St Lawrence ( lovely station) was the site of a TB hospital and still people see apparitions of hospital garbed personnel wandering around. PS great hotel Old Park Hotel St Lawrence, gorgeous Victoriana, gardens overlooking the sea. Next to bird park. Looking forward to your next video!

Just a quick observation. Can you be a bit more slower with the camera. You seem to rush with some of the views. Especially when the viewer is trying to work out the old and new scenes . Kind regards Mark
