Before he breaks into “Shout” he sings “are you ready, Skip?” Skip Pitts was the guitarist/bandleader that wrote the opening lick for “It’s Your Thing.” Later in his career, he played the wah pedal intro on “Shaft” by Issac Hayes..

I was there with my mom (RIP) and my two brothers, June 21, 1969. The first live concert by major recording artists I ever attended. We were halfway up in the bleachers in right field, near home plate. The artists who performed on this show were amazing. The Five Stairsteps weren't playing, they came to work. "O-o-h Child" had yet to start its way up the charts. The Edwin Hawkins Singers held the audience in thrall. Moms Mabley was her nasty ol' woman self cracking everybody up -- except my mom, who was awkwardly trying to brush aside questions from her kids about what she was saying! No, Ike & Tina Turner weren't there; as I understand it, they were requested to perform. Their spot in the show was taken by The Sweet Cherries, a 3-woman group produced by the Isley Brothers. Another group asked to appear was the Impressions; for unknown reasons, they couldn't make it. Their slot was taken by Johnny Maestro and the Brooklyn Bridge. Even I, at such a young age (7), felt the vibe. The audience was cool with the music the group created ("Worst That Could Happen" lit up the charts back then), but it wasn't funky enough. SUDDENLY, the Brooklyn Bridge tore into an Impressions medley! Johnny Maestro hit Curtis Mayfield's high falsetto notes perfectly. The crowd went crazy; from that point on, the group had won them over. The energy was building, growing. Then the Isley Brothers appeared. This was the group everyone had come to see. When "It's Your Thing" started, people were dancing in the aisles. Then they rushed the stage. Sitting in a tent by home plate, behind a curtain, was the recording engineer for the album... my dad, Tony May. He had nothing but a mic stand to protect himself, and the thousands of dollars of tape equipment from being damaged. Portions of the "Live At Yankee Stadium" album don't match the film's soundtrack; they had to be re-recorded in the studio. Signal cables from the stage had been pulled out by the crowd, leaving gaps in the vocals and some of the instruments. People were dancing on top of a grand piano, which collapsed under the weight. The keyboard player suffered a broken leg. This film deserves a release with full HD restoration, and a remaster of the soundtrack, with every element that can be properly sourced. It's as important for the moment it captured as Wattstax was for that concert.

By the time the album with the studio version of "It's Your Thing" was recorded, the Isleys had been let go of their Motown contract ("This Old Heart Of Mine" was their only hit for the label). They bounced out of there, and re-started their independent label from years before (originally distributed by Atlantic). "It's Your Thing" was such a big hit, Motown took them to court, insisting they had violated the terms of their old contract -- and trying to get one more album from them. Motown lost, and the Isleys threw down HARD from that point on. "Fight The Power", "Who's That Lady", 'Work To Do" and all the rest. Ron could do ear-caressing slow jams before the phrase was even invented, but make no mistake: the Isley Brothers knew how to light up a stage with some burning funk.
