Reviews of THE IPCRESS FILE (1965) or GET CARTER (1971) would be great.. Classic Michael Caine Films are fantastic !!!

The script was actually written as darker, so I think the vicious-ness of the robbery comes from that. Bridger was a middle aged man and genuinely frightening and sadistic. The casting of Noel Coward did indeed come from director Peter Collinson, who Coward had been an Uncle figure to when he was a boy living in The Actor's Orphanage. Coward was President of there, and became Collinson's Godfather. Collinson lightened the tone, and brought in people like Benny Hill and the excellent Irene Handl (as Miss Peach). But what it does is actually create a very unique style, with this Ave' A Banana caper combined with a British comic strip like look, and then bits of cold-ness. Bridger as played by Coward is a wonderful creation, perfectly gentlemanly, yet clearly a very intimidating and influential person. It highlights that the characters are fun and charming, but operating in a violent and serious world. The Mafia likewise are always dapper and charming, but also frightening. There are other traces of the dark undertone in the finished film, with Charlie telling The Mafia that if they're killed, Mr Bridger will have his people commit no less than genocide against innocent Italians living in British cities.

Thank you for reviewing this, its one of my favourite films. I love how you guys don't just review the film, you discuss the impact it had on the world at the time and the genre, its a joy to listen to. Will you ever review Get Carter?

I'd love to do Get Carter. I met and interviewed the cinematographer, Wolf Suschitzky, who as a younger man had met and photographed H G Wells. Wolf gave me a copy of one of his photos which is one of the most extraordinary things that I own. Not a lot of people know that.

Noel Coward was the director's godfather in real life. The Making Of mentions a surreal moment when, in a posh London restaurant, Michael Caine sang "My Old Man's a Dustman" to Quincy Jones, complete with "da-de-da-de-da-da" at the end, which Quincy put into the Self Preservation Society. Trivia: when the minis are being driven into the bus, the man standing at the back waving them in was the director himself, as none of the stunt men would do it. He was royally reprimanded later. PS: I delayed buying the "remake" until it went down to about £1.50. so that I wouldn't waste too much money. Still wasted £1.50. The best stunt on the DVD isn't even in the film, it's on one of the extras

Very enjoyable guys, thanks. It's absolutely a product of its time, for better or worse, but entertaining nonetheless. Toby is always a great insightful contributor. Now bring Brad back!

I forgot this movie existed for years until they made a reference to it in Hobbes and Shaw. Edit - oh and I'm only talking about the 1997 version. I think I remember hearing it was a remake at the time but like The Ladykillers, nothing I was particularly interested in.

The audacious ending actually occurred because the producer thought the film had legs, and a sequel was inevitable. More traditional endings had been scripted but it was quite late on that the actual ending as filmed was decided. The film wasn't actually a financial success at the time, which Caine put down to bad marketing. It's only became a classic through repeated screenings on BBC1, often on Bank Holidays and Xmas Eve's.

In the book of the film, they actually get the gold home - but have to give it back to the Mafia because of threatened reprisals.
@davidjames579
@davidjames579 3 года назад
@@franl155 I didn't know there was a book of the film, but I believe that ending that was one of the scripted ones was that Mr Bridger has in the meantime done a deal with The Mafia, so they can have the Gold back in return for some sweetner for him. Making the whole Italian Job pointless.
@franl155
@franl155 3 года назад
@@davidjames579 - I don't know which came first, book or film: I suspect book, otherwise the ending would have been the same as the film. Yes, your ending is right, as far as I remember - I only read it once, decades ago.
@davidjames579
@davidjames579 3 года назад
@@franl155 I know the film is an original screenplay, so the book would be a novelisation, but presumably adapted from an earlier draft of the script (as often happens with novelisations as they have to be finished early).

@@davidjames579 - yes, it would have been rather an unsatisfactory ending to a book! some things work better on paper, others work better on film

I must confess I saw the remake first and I'm told now that it's about a guy watching the original film and doing the heist forgotten that its worse than I remembered.
@davidjames579
@davidjames579 4 года назад
What makes it worse is Wahlberg plays Charlie Croker and Donald Sutherland plays Bridger. So he gets the idea from a film where the guy has the same name as him.
