The Jackson Kayak Gnarvana

My first thoughts and a simple rundown on the new Jackson Kayak Gnarvana. It's more than Jackson Kayak finally joining the high rockered trend in creeking and it's not just an upgrade of the Nirvana, it's a complete redesign from a whole new perspective on what it means to be a great creek boat. Here's my initial thoughts, some initial laps, and some genuine stoke for Jackson Kayak's latest creation.
When I first looked at the specs, it threw me off a bit. I thought all that volume and all that width would just be too much for me. The thing is, they just don't tell the whole story. The boat is nimble, fast, and easy to play with. With every maneuver I just skipped away in control and only seemed to pick up speed. Edge transitions were effortless and automatic. Even landing on edge didn't seem to slow it down.
***Important note on boat fit and performance... If you sit forward in it, it'll feel too big or too wide. Like most modern creekers, it'll go better and be easier to control if you scoot the seat back a notch, instead of forward. Moving forward lifts the stern out more, but also makes this boat and others like it feel more squirrelly... and can make them 'seek' where the bow picks directions for you. Scooting forward also doesn't help with speed. It increases drag and makes it feel sluggish. On modern designs, scoot back instead of forward and if you're heavy in it, it's almost more important to be back instead of forward. I know that's counterintuitive. **
On sizing...
If you want a bomb shelter for rapids that scare you and a predictable, easy, but extremely fast ride then follow the specs or size up if you're in between. If you want to spice up your local dam release and carve up a class IV+ run and feel more engaged and "on" without dulling it down or losing speed, then size down if you're in between. If you're in the middle though... no choice necessary. This boat is sick! You can trust the medium is a true medium and the small is a true small, no question. Don't let the numbers scare you... the hype is real.
If you haven't already, check out Rob Giersch Photography and be sure to support. It takes a lot to stand at the sidelines to capture other people's laps, moments, and joy, and it takes time and effort to learn how to do it well. Be sure to show some love... He captured the cover photo from one of my Cascades laps.
As promised, here's the Zen3 vs Nirvana Video: • Z3 vs Nirvana that captures some of the major differences between the Z3 and longer designs like the Nirvana and Gnarvana.

"Creek" as in River Runner. My longest creek boat tops out at 8 feet 8 inches. Thank God I also found a nice Super Hero at 7 feet 9 inches. I live in Pigeon Forge TN, where several creeks with 15 minutes of my house have millions of boulder turns for short boats only. Yeah, when I get down to the Tellico or the Watauga, I could enjoy a Gnarvana. But for that, I already of course own the Phoenix. Hell, if you wanna go River, go for it!

You’d actually be amazed. It tight creeks well and fits into tiny eddies… It’d be super fun on West Prong, but I wouldn’t want to carry it up Big Creek. The rocker profile effectively shortens it and makes it fit right in, but if you want a similar feel in a smaller package and something much lighter to carry, I highly recommend the Flow. For a strictly southeast creeker, the Flow is where it’s at. 🤙🏻

I retired from the rivers when I was 52. That was 20 years ago. I'd give anything to roll back the clock and get into that boat!!

@@CleanLineKayaking Yea, I'm sure I will. I loved the Nirvana, my favorite creek boat I ever paddled. I also have an Antix 2.0, Zen 2, and Traverse 9. Guess, I'm unofficially on team Jackson, haha. I still need to learn more about a half-slice to really appreciate the Antix 2.0 I think. I need to force myself to be more aggressive and try out moves and surfing more. Also, a question about the beesneez, I only have them in the Antix 2.0, and my feet go to sleep in that boat all the time. Do you think the position of that hump in the beesneez could be pressing on a nerve and causing my feet to go to sleep or is it just because the boat is smaller than I'm used to? I've been hesitant to go super aggressive with the beesneez but I think I'm going to because that will get the hump off my thigh.

@@1stVARifleman A half slice instructional video is definitely on the way... can't wait to get it out. It's filmed but I haven't had time to edit for a while. As far as your legs.. Typically, your feet or leg going numb is caused by your hip pads poking into your hip, being too tight, or being in a weird position combined with your backband. Sometimes it's caused by your feet/backband being too tight too. I doubt your Bees Knees are the problem. The easiest solution is likely just lifting your hip pads up more over your hips or reshaping them a bit to fit you better. If your Bees Knees are not comfortable, you can just pull them out or move them to see if it helps. If they're poking into your thigh, I'd definitely fix that. They should just hug/support your leg just above your knee. It's easiest to hold them on your knee in a comfortable position and then place your knee into the boat to lock each one in place. If they positioned too high up your thigh and still sticking to the velcro, I'd guess that you're way too far forward in the boat. Centered to back a bit is typically best in modern designs. Hope this helps!

Great video!! Can you add any clarity @ your experience with flight restrictions, and the length constraints that could come up? This wasn't on my first kayak check list, but living in the Midwest I know I'll want to get on a plane with my rig. Keep up the great work!
@CleanLineKayaking
@CleanLineKayaking Год назад
Every airline and specific plane has a maximum length, width, height ratio that can be checked as luggage, even as special luggage. A Z3 or Antix 2 will typically fit within those specified dimensions. Large boats the Gnarvana require a larger airplane and friendlier airline to be accepted and that can limit your options. Check your airline websites for what they allow when you’re ready to fly. Typically, Southwest or Air Canada are pretty friendly, but each plane type has specific restrictions and a 9’ boat is more likely to be turned away

For a starting paddler in the northeast (Quebec / Ontario) would it be better to start off with the Gnar or an Antix if you want to develop quicker, Boyd?

Hey there, I'm just seeing this and I know it's been a while... I'd go Antix 2.0 of the two unless you're just really timid and trying to ease into the sport. The Gnarvana is really a bomb shelter for hard water, the Antix 2.0 would speed up your progression 🤙

Hi Boyd If you could only have a Gnarvana or a Z3 as an early intermediate paddler which one would you recommend?
@CleanLineKayaking
@CleanLineKayaking Год назад
What do you want out of it? If I were only going to have one boat as an intermediate, or even as an advanced paddler, I would go with the Antix 2.0. Between the Gnarvana and Z3, I would choose the Gnarvana but to fill the creeking niche in my kayak quiver.

@CleanLineKayaking
@CleanLineKayaking Год назад
I probably should… my passion is just on the creeking side. I can keep it short though, and say that it’s incredible. It’s the best playboat I’ve ever paddled and the loosest hull we’ve got by a long shot. It’s the playboat I’ve always wanted Jackson Kayak to make and I’m not a good enough playboater to hit a limit in it. It blows my mind regularly… such a great design. I have no negative feedback about it either. I just don’t have loads of freestyle video to make that review interesting but if you go to my facebook page or instagram, you can see a great shot of a pan am I threw in it on Minibus wave that sums up how I feel about it. Get one 🤙🏻 There’s nothing close… the IV is now obsolete and I’ve never said that about any other Rockstar

What do the knee blocks do? How do they effect the role and bracing aspect? How did you make them and what glue did you use to keep them in place?
@CleanLineKayaking
@CleanLineKayaking Год назад
Knee blocks are just extra padding that sits around the end of your thigh/knee between you and the boat. Depending on their shape and position, they can narrow the position of your legs and lower your knees in the boat. It mostly helps with comfort but it can also dramatically improve performance if you know what you’re doing, by making the boat respond faster to lighter hip/leg movements. Typically I just carve then out of extra foam or cheap foam yoga blocks and glue them in with weldwood cement. If you have the Bees Knees, a smaller and lighter knee block, you can glue industrial strength velcro to your homemade knee blocks to replace them if you want something more aggressive. I may make a video on it soon, but if you watch the Wade Harrison Z3 walkthrough, you can see what I use for mine

I've paddled the Gnarvana through some decent whitewater a few times now. I'm definitely more of an intermediate class III+/IV boater. The Gnarvana definitely feels different than the Nirvana. The main differences IMO, the Gnarvana doesn't track straight as well as the Nirvana, the Gnarvana isn't as quick to pick up speed off initial paddle strokes as the Nirvana, and I feel a little lower in the boat than the Nirvana. The Gnarvana punches through holes better because of the increased rocker, the Gnarvana's bow is drier, the Gnarvana will take care of you a little better than the Nirvana, the stern of the Gnarvana is definitely propelled forward more than the Nirvana off drops, and the Gnarvana skips better off drops (a potential negative or positive, depending on your paddle style based off the last two points, is the bow will come completely out of the water skipping out of drops and holes which causes the boat to almost ride a wheelie/tailie away from drops/holes without trying). I'm still undecided about which boat is more maneuverable. I think the Gnarvana is, but I find that boat a little spiny right now as I continue to grow more accustomed to it. So, I think after I get more dialed into the nuances of the Gnarvana, I will more than likely say the Gnarvana is more maneuverable than the Nirvana. However, I never found the Nirvana unmaneuverable, but rather nimble despite length and desire to track straight. I wish I could surf better and play with the edges more to give an informed opinion on that, but I'm more of a river runner/creeker. Hopefully, the Antix 2.0 will push me to be a better down river play boater. Overall, I love both the Gnarvana and the Nirvana. I think more time in the Gnarvana will eventually have me completely favoring that boat, but both boats are great. If I could give a tagline for the Gnarvana or highlight what I believe to be its strongest feature so far in my experience, I believe this is the best phrase, "the Gnarvana punches through holes like Mike Tyson or Chuck Liddell punched through their opponents in their prime, instant KNOCKOUTS."
@CleanLineKayaking
@CleanLineKayaking Год назад
Curious what seat position you’ve been using. If tracking is hard position further back. Based on what you’ve experienced, it sounds like you may be too far forward. Cheers & thanks for watching 🤙🏻

@@CleanLineKayaking I'm in the stock middle position. I've always paddled my boats there. The only exception is the Antix 2.0. I'm one notch back on the Antix 2.0. I did that more for extra leg room as I'm fairly tall compared to many kayakers.
