The movie didn’t really convey that, according to Michael, Joe was the source of his low self-esteem. Michael hated the way he looked, largely because Joe would make fun of his nose, and other physical features. Joe never seemed to understand that Michael was a sensitive person, so his abuse affected Michael more drastically than the other children. People have to realize that every child can’t be parented the same because they have different personalities and react to things differently.
Exactly. If your child is that scared of you somethings wrong. And people excuse it because they were successful. A lot of child stars are successful but they get molested by industry pedophiles. Success doesn't excuse abuse.
People need to remember that Michael was also a child, what seemed like nothing to adults was probably amplified 10x to him and honestly his father probably shared kind moments with him but it was overshadowed by the anger.
I do think Joe was a strict and harsh dad, but I think MJ was also just a sensitive soul so he took the whoopings and scolding differently and it affected him more than the other kids. He internalized it and became a perfectionist with his talent, but withdrawn and socially awkward.
@@obdiane not socially awkward just a introverted personality like me tbh it’s crazy cause when I was a young child I was a pure extrovert but life humbled you and I guess I just became introverted like MJ I completely understand MJ he was so misunderstood🙏🏽👑💝✨💯
In 1993 Wylie Draper who played the older MJ was diagnosed with a rare form of Leukemia, and he died at the age of 24. There was not much fanfare when he passed. Such a shame. R.I.P. Wylie......
Fun facts about Michael's kid actor. He could actually sing. I'm pretty sure he was the only one that they didn't have to overdub with a different singer. He also did simba's singing parts in the lion king.
Joe Jackson and Abraham Quintanilla are the two most unsatisfied dads I’ve ever seen both had kids and made them a band both had a breakout star and both were bitter fathers that didn’t seem to be satisfied with any of the success there kids made 😂
I’m 41. I was 13 when this Mini Series debuted and when I tell you, it was an EVENT!!! This was pre DVR so everyone had to rush home to watch it when it aired lol
Facts! I remember this like I'm talking to you all now ! The next day I kid you not, the next day everyone was talking about this lovely piece of history!
You wondered why Rebbie and Tito were in a rush to get married. Rebbie got married because Jehovah's Witnesses believe in marrying before having sex, so they often marry quite young so as not to "sin." Tito -- and quite a few others of the Jackson kids -- married young because marriage was a way to "free' themselves of Joseph's dominance over their personal lives. He might control their professional ones, but marriage was the only acceptable way to get out from under his heavy hand.
Randy joined the group in 1972 so the were still in Motown, he was in the back playing his little conga and people were confused how it was 6 brothers. It wasn’t until 1976 when Jermaine left he officially was in the group and they were named the Jacksons. Randy joined the group while they were already popular so they couldn’t change their name
I'm so old, I remember watching Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs as "Freddie 'Boom Boom' Washington" on the sitcom Welcome Back Kotter. I remember the first time I watched this and I was thinking, "Who is this dude playing Joe Jackson? He looks familiar." I was blown away when I realized it was him. LOL! He's an excellent actor. I don't know why he isn't more of a household name.
3:39:16 I was very disappointed after his death finding out that this wasn't exactly how it happened. His hair was on fire before he even started down the steps. And when he made it down he spun around with enough force to extinguish most of the flames.
Though I do respect Joseph for what he did for his family the movie couldn’t show the all the ways he used to abuse them he did not just use belts but it’s a movie mad by some of the Jackson’s so I understand that they didn’t want to humiliate their father
This movie is One of my Top Favorites ever...The guy that plays older Michael, his name is Wylie Draper. He was originally a dancer and was hand picked my MJ to play him, but unfortunately soon after this film was released he passed away from Leukemia. I've always said that Wylie looks so close to MJ, which conveniently I found out is one of the reasons why he was chosen for this role.
You’re an legend for reacting to this in full brotha thank you this movie/tv special is a CLASSIC!🙏🏽🙌🏽👑❤️💕💯(the only thing that ever annoyed me about this movie is they got the year wrong when recording Human Nature cause Thriller came out in 1982 lol)
LOLOL JJ what the heck dude. If you were living in a small house with over 10 family members in it and as mean as Joe was, wouldn't you wanna get the hell out too....
No it’s not. I’m sick of people saying this. The song was for a film called Ben which was about a rat. It had nothing to do with anything in his life. It just so happened that Michael loved animals irl
@@KD-cd2ck Ohhh. I was always told that it was about the pet. I thought it was sweet that he never forgot about the friend he made, but what you’re saying makes scenes. Thanks for the clarification. :)
Rebbie is the oldest and she was a signer too - she had a hit called Centipede in 1984 and she came back on Michael's MJJ label with a song called Faithfully in 1998
The guy you’re referring to that looks a lot like Michael is Wylie Draper. Unfortunately, he passed away at the age of 24 in 1993, 5 days before Christmas. He had a rare and acute form of leukemia. I’ve “known” him for 12 years and know ALOT about him! I’ve studied for years. And he’s amazing!
The actor who played Micheal Jackson and sang with Diana Ross was Jason Weaver. That was his voice. He had an album out. He also played on stomp the yard
I hated that go get the tree switch part, amongst many other parts. I remember those days growing up & my other siblings crying on the sidelines smh & lol.
Teenage Jackie is played by Bumper Robinson, he was in a lot of tv shows and movies in the 80s and early 90s: Night Court, Amen, A Different World, etc. The singing group that antagonizes him before the fight is played by Boyz II Men.
Yes the rat thing is true, Michael played with rats, that’s how badly he felt alone. There’s even a 10th kid that Joe Jackson raised and paid for but the family doesn’t acknowledge her.
@@maninedoow5895 that’s very cool of them. There’s no reason for the rest of them not to acknowledge her and try to let her in. I mean if Kathrine can do it then they all can.
@@ShockMe1994 but then again you have to realize that- they didn't owe her anything, I feel bad for the kid but she had something that they never had and that was a father in Joseph, so I can see why they felt so different about her and she was a result of an affair that hurt their mother...idk but I would be the same way
@@emixxixx3001 I can sympathize that she got their father when he couldn’t be a loving father to them and that it hurt their mother. I know she’s the most important thing in all of her kids lives.
@ShockMe1994 Outside of the child in which you were referring to that Mr. Joesph W. Jackson had while committing infidelity on Katherine E. Scruse - Jackson. Both Mr. Joesph W. Jackson & Mrs. Katherine E. Scruse - Jackson had 10 children (9 whom survive, and they raised together.) The additional child died shortly after being born prematurely. They even named him; his name was Brandon David Jackson he was born March, 12 1957. Another fact is Brandon was Marlon David Jackson’s twin brother both were born prematurely. 🕊 🦢
At 3:31:08 Michael would frequently co produce his own music and mess around with things he was smart and a great producer people don’t give him his props from that
JJ thanks for reacting to this and taking us back down memory lane and getting to know our 70's culture...... You did not make it seem like it was 4 hours. Again thanks brother...... I'm not sure what Part 2 is, never saw it. They originally aired this in two parts, 2 hours each. So you are good....
Jovaneh ( not sure how to spell it ) was Joseph's illegitimate daughter from an affair, she was one of the names you read. Katherine and Joseph's children are : Rebbie, Jackie. Jermaine, Tito, Marlon, Latoya, Michael, Randy, and Janet.Tito Jackson is a well respected guitarist and musician in the industry , he recently put out a album that did very well and went on a tour. People only made fun of him because he didn't dance as much as his brothers and preferred staying out of the spotlight. If they did every single event that happened in the Jackson's life story we would be here for months, of course they had to condense the scenes for the movie.Thank you for reviewing this awesome movie. ❤
My problem with this film even though I enjoy it is that they get a lot of details wrong. Some dates are wrong, like Michael recording Rockin’ Robin in 1969/70 even though he recorded it in 1972, or Michael recording Human Nature In 1983 even though that was on the Thriller album which was released a year earlier and there’s other stuff like that. They even get some dance moves and costumes wrong.
For the Human Nature part, since it was already released on Thriller in 1982, they could have added in some lines explaining that Michael was simply remixing it for release as a single (the single dropped on July 3, 1983).
How can you not know what Motown 25 is?! I mean everyone remembers it because it was the first time MJ performed Billie Jean live and debuts his version of the moonwalk and stuff but the entire show was and is to this day one of the greatest music events ever. People forget that Debarge also debuted on that show. The battle between the Temptations and the Four Tops?? The show was epic. The Jackson’s and MJ’s full performance from it are on RU-vid but so are a lot of other performances from it. I think it was one of the last tv appearances of Marvin Gaye too. Stevie Wonder was on it. Diana Ross reunited with the Supremes. I think the Commodores were there too but Lionel Richie was a no show. Here’s a quick fun fact. Beat It was actually the number 1 song in the country when Motown 25 aired, not Billie Jean and it didn’t return Billie Jean to the number one spot. The Thriller album had been number 1 in the country for 10 weeks straight already and after Motown 25 stayed number 1 for another 5 weeks. Then after falling out of the number 1 spot it went back to complete a still record holding 37 weeks in the number one spot.
I’m still rewatching this....the kids basically wanted to leave out the house because of Joseph. I think the only people that stayed were Michael, Latoya and Janet but Janet left after the control album. I think Michael left aged 30
the opening theme instrumental is an actual song called "Stay With Love" sung by Jermaine Jackson and Syreeta Wright. it is included on this film's soundtrack.
and so you know, you watched both parts. this video just put them together. part two begins when adult Michael debuts in the studio with his brothers rehearsing the choreography for "Dancing Machine" in 1976.
Fun fact: Though she gave credit to her then husband, "Jermaine Jackson", Margaret Maldonado, Jermaine's 2nd "wife" (as she claims in her book, tho she provides no wedding date etc., so I don't believe they were ever really married) was the creative mind & executive producer behind this mini-series. She remarked that after their Victory Tour, the brothers lived so "high on the hog", that by the time Margaret began toying with the idea of creating this series, the brothers were doing so bad financially (with thee exception of Michael of course), she wanted to come up with an idea that would put a nice amount of money in everyone's pockets. Doing such a great job creating this series gave her entree into the creative branch of entertainment moving forward, so she & her children were able to be okay, been tho Jermaine was a barely present, deadbeat dad. So kudos to Margaret Maldonado for this great series that many of us have watched over 10 times, I for 1 am more like approaaching my 20th viewing, that's for sure!!!
Man those were some long 4hrs!! But I rode it out with U from beginning to end. I'm actually in the J5's age group, so it was nice time traveling for me. I appreciate this selection on your part.
When Tito got the whooping, i always felt a way about it. My brothers wouldnt have been crying, THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN LAUGHING!!! (just loud enough for me to hear, but not where my parents would or theyll be next)
I remember I owned this on VHS in the 90s and the tape got stuck in the VCR. Every time it would come on in the late 90s, early 2000s I would catch it at the end. This was before DVR. Thank God for RU-vid, streaming platforms and all that. Btw, I just came across your channel my brotha. Your channel is much different from other reaction channels. Keep doing what you doing man. Keep elevating.
Hi I just wanted to say thanking for reacting to this movie😀by the way I love Michael Jackson huge fan.RIP to him, he was a good musician so Rip to Michael Jackson. In this movie I loved when she said" Joseph Go To Bed" like she really put her foot down and I loved that like in the middle of the movie she really did put her foot down and I loved that she stranded up to herself, love that side of her😀
Michael was born in 1958 but the timeline was messed up it said 1959 that’s one of the things I was scratching my head only because my aunt was born a few months & the same year as MJ
Hey bro one thing u gotta understand is getting married was the only way they could get away from they dad until they decided to just fire him from managing them so yea they probably was young when they got married but it was the only way at the time to get away
It's great that you gave Joe Jackson props for his dedication and contribution to the vision. A lot of people and the media likes to demonize Black men and only emphasize the negative. Joe Jackson was not perfect, nor is anyone else. Props to you for highlighting the good.
He technically never replaced Jermaine. Randy was around already before Jermaine left...he was just not considered an official member. He would play all the instruments.
When Michael was singing "I got the feeling" it was a cover from original song "I got the feeling" by James Brown, the Godfather of Soul, and Michael was inspired by James Brown and looked up to him as his mentor
@JustJammin' Ben was The Rat!!! lyrics by Michael Ben, the two of us need look no more We both found what we were looking for With a friend to call my own I'll never be alone And you, my friend, will see You've got a friend in me (You've got a friend in me) [Verse 2] Ben, you're always running here and there (Here and there) You feel you're not wanted anywhere (Anywhere) If you ever look behind And don't like what you find There's something you should know You've got a place to go (You've got a place to go)
They didn’t show all the torment that Joseph put Michael through, on your own time watch of if you want to react to it watch Michael Jackson private phone conversations you’ll understand him better and why in the movie he threw that shoe at Joseph’s
Joe moved to Vegas in the 80's when it was discovered that he had a daughter with another woman. Even though he and Catherine were married on paper, they lived separately all the way up to Joe's death.
The song home originated from The wiz and Stephanie Mills sing it first then when the wiz came out with a movie because the wiz was a play a Broadway play at first when The wiz came out as a movie Diana Ross did the song. By the way if you haven't watched The wiz you might want to cuz it's both Michael Jackson and Diana Ross in that movie and it's awesome
Dear lord will people stop saying this?!? BEN was written NOT by Michael Jackson and it was for a movie soundtrack for the MOVIE BEN. If you saw the remake of that movie, it was called Willard. MJ did sing it and it did win a golden globe and was nominated for an Oscar.
