Another great video! I think I prefer seeing the more modest projects over the " money is no object" homes. I like seeing how they still seem to offer a rewarding living environment.

I really like making the videos about his smaller projects, because they show even more how good he was than the videos about his larger projects and he's off course best known for his large projects. Not a lot people know that he was also brilliant in designing low buget homes. More videos about smaller projects will come up.

I know what you mean, Lautner made so many great designs that's difficult to pick your favorite. Im currently busy with a video about the Schwimmer house, which is also one of my favorite designs. The video will be uploaded very soon.

Jop you have outdone yourself. The way you explain the roof construction deserves credit especially when you link this to the way Laurent uses it to create the feeling of openness in relatively small houses. After your videos there is always the urge to book a flight and see for our selves. Maybe one day😊 until than keep up your amazing work. 🙏

Dankjewel Pierre!

Great to hear that you like my videos so much. I try to make them better every time. Nice that you mention the music, beaucse choosing music is one of the most difficult aspects of making these videos. Each time it's difficult to find a tune that supports the images well and it's not to loud or to distracting. More new videos will come up soon.

Great to hear that you like the channel so much. I startedthe channel because there was so little information available about the designs by John Lautner, F.L Wright and Neutra. It was so difficult to get an overview of the lay out and interiors of the houses, so I started the research and now I show it to other people.

Such inovitative houses and beautiful constructions It would be interesting to have interviews with families that has lived in them? I myself is brought up in a Wright inspired house and Lautner is so diffrent in integrating all of the people in the dwelling but the guest rooms
@SuperJobbel
@SuperJobbel Год назад
There's a book called ''Lautner A-Z'' which tells a lot about the people who had lived in the houses. It has also a lot interviews with them. So you can buy/read that book. And yes the work by Lautner is very different than Wright, yet similar at the same time.
@jmz388
@jmz388 Год назад
@@SuperJobbel Thank you for the book tip .. yes Wright is more sculptural I think Lautner brings the humans lives into the building more as he is more modern than wright in kitchens and bedrooms I think lifestyles in buildings could help Architects improve furniture to suit lifestyle for screen age compared to view age or secluded age

This is a lovely video. I think maybe I like the Jacobsen house a little better, just because, but both houses give you the feeling of living in the trees. I like the external support columns very much, and understand why John Lautner used them here and in other buildings. They look a little strange from outside, but it's so nice to have the freedom of the open space inside.

Both interesting houses. The hexagon shapes make for some odd spaces, especially in the kitchens, like the sink in the Jacobsen kitchen and the tight corridor in the Polin kitchen. I think both original kitchens would have had very dark areas, which was probably okay for the time. I remember a fad for octagonal chalet cabins for a while. The rooms tended to be awkward triangles. These houses fixed that by having almost no walls. Very clever.
@SuperJobbel
@SuperJobbel 5 месяцев назад
Yes the roof is independent from the internal walls: so you can built any floorplan underneath. Therefore you can change the interior with any preferable lay out. The houses are improved somewhat over time.

Enjoyed this thanks. I wonder if it was hard to convince the clients to do these types of houses
@SuperJobbel
@SuperJobbel Год назад
That's an interesting question, I've never thought about it. I guess it would be sometiimes difficult to convince clients. What I do know is that Lautner sometimes had major conflicts with his commisionars like Bob Hope and Leo Harvey over budget and changes to the original design. In the case of the Bob Hope house Lautner even left the project.

Very nice, I like both. The unusual roof supports intrigue me. Figuring how the remain strong and useful will take me research. Thx for the work you do
@SuperJobbel
@SuperJobbel Год назад
It is a very strong roof construction: steel horizontal beams are placed in steel trusses, that distribute the weight over 3 vertical pillars. These pillars are fooded in deep concrete fundations in the hillside. The roof is made a thin wooden plates, and is relatively lightweight. So I guess the construction remain for many years. Keep in mind that the steel pillars don't rust in the dry and hot Californian climate. I also like both houses, although I slightly prefer the Polin house.

Lmfao they are like flying buttresses but on a smaller scale. No offense but what do you mean by, how they remain strong? How do steel skyscrapers "stand strong"?

It's interesting to see how Lautner took FLW's ideas in a completely different direction. You can really see it in these houses, especially in the clerestory windows, the half-height walls, the contrasts of brick-wood-cement, and the cramped entryways leading to the open floorplan.
@SuperJobbel
@SuperJobbel Год назад
I would not say ''in a different direction'' but I prefer to say '' he evolved the ideas by FLW to another level''. The main difference between Lautner and FLW is that Lautner used techniques that were not available in the time when FLW made most of his designs: Lautner had the opportunity to work with better steel constructions, better quality concrete and large glassplates that could be used for large windows. This resulted in Lautner's designs being houses with more open spaces, high ceilings, and many windows, while Wright's design are known for there low ceiling, small bedrooms and many brick walls. In philisophy and vision both architects are very equal. If Wright would have lived 50 years longer his designs probably would have looked very like Lautner.

Great video and narrative. I really appreciate the diagrams drawn by you. In all of the record drawings or sketches is the name of the structural engineer mentioned? It would be great to know, a lot of what we see here is his work and it is clear that he and Lautner were a team.
@SuperJobbel
@SuperJobbel Год назад
Good to hear that you like the video so much. Yes it's sad that many of the enginers who worked for Lautner don't get the credit for helping hem with building these projects. I would like to make a video someday about the most important enginers who worked for Lautner and show what there contribution was. It's difficult to find out for which house they had worked, so in this video I couldn't find out which enginers participate, therefore I didn't include there names in the video. One day I will pay hommage to the many loyal workers for Lautner like Helena Arahuette, Duncan Nicholson, Roban Poirier, Andrew Nasser and many more!

I’m curious if the Polin’s and Jacobsen’s knew each other, or if there was a reason that the two such similar houses were placed on neighbouring lots. It seems like something family members or good friends would be likely to do? They’re both great houses!
