Everyone wants to be happy, but it seems like such an unobtainable goal. Should we focus on making money? Should we focus on pursuing our passions? Or should we just become a monk in the mountains. Luckily for us, the Japanese have already cracked the code. They have a formula for happiness called Ikigai.

Money does not solve problems, the security it brings, actually brings happiness, money is a means to achieve it.

You need money (a store of value) to not be a parasite, you consume energy by living which has a production cost. Money doesn't have to be paper notes, it has been shells etc. in the past as long as two parties agree anything can be money, money makes barter more effective as you can skip many steps of direct barter that used to be required.

I think it was more of money isn’t needed for happiness as in you can’t buy out but you do need to feel safe if you feel unsafe like your gonna go bank rupt or injured they trigger the same response of fight or flight so it’s not actually the money/being comfortable it’s feeling safe your not going to be changing all over the place

Dot Solution it seems like you’re doing very well for yourself but there’s one thing that caught my attention. You said you “think” you found happiness. That uncertainty makes me think there’s possibly something you’re not quiet happy with or are missing. Possibly a re-evaluation could help find the uncertainty.

This is actually a misinterpretation of what Ikigai is. This is a western interpretation to help those find purpose in the world. If this works for you then thats okay. The true meaning of Ikigai as the Japanese envision it, is to find beauty in the little things. This can be as simple as enjoying the sun rise, or sweeping the dust off of your porch. Finding joy in the mundane promotes the joy from within.

@aaaAAA-vr2hv
@aaaAAA-vr2hv 3 года назад
@@LazyAdventurer101 true Money brings happiness because you don't have to constantly worry about starving, and if your hungry you get irritated and are not happy. + Taking cold showers and no heating is pretty bad. But people forget you have to work for the money. For example, my mother works all day, and never has time for anything. Even when she's on a break she constantly worries about working and can't enjoy what she works for. I would rather work part time and be somewhat poor than full time and be richer. But people that say that money doesn't bring happiness and you should stay where you are are just trying to step on others to not get competition.
@EZM7
@EZM7 3 года назад
@@aaaAAA-vr2hv but you said it yourself your mom has money and isn’t happy. Money relieves you from financial stress, yes, but that doesn’t make you happy, it just makes you not stressed about basic needs. Happiness comes from the relationships you have with other people like love or friendship, and it also comes from purpose too. Doing what you love doing. you can be one of the richest people on the planet but if you hate your job so much you’ll never be happy. In fact, you’ll end up with bad spending habits, buying things you don’t need to make up for how unsatisfied you are with your life and before you know it you’re drowning in debt and your back to square 1 with financial issues. Yes, money is an absolute necessity but being rich isn’t. And if you become rich by doing something you love that’s fucking awesome.

I can't explain how much happier I am now. while in the future I want to quit and become a full-time photographer I realize now that with financial stability I can make better and quality decisions for my buisness while being happier, actually taking care of my health now, and love the process of making art. My day job fulfills about half the diagram, and my hobbies take care of the rest. Because of my particular nature as a person, I would hate having all my income being based on my creative outlets; they would become just another job. Also goes to say that not having debt vastly improves your chance of attaining ikigai 😉 But Ikigai in my situation is not and should never be one all-encompassing thing, and I feel like you should have mentioned that. Because sadly, not all of us can be world-class whittlers of artisanal spoons, or kimono painters, or whatever, and still survive in our parts of the world. Balance is vital.

All of your points are things people may want. Hardly universal. Look at Buddhists "formula" for happiness. No desires. You are shooting for acheivement, which is fine, but it does not correlate to happiness. Happiness only comes when you are satisfied, and the only way to be satisfied is to want LESS, not more.

But you cant live with nothing, so you have to choose something that will give you money for food. So you choose the minimal thing that will give you the maximum amount of self improvment, then you can be yourself and you need nothing more than this. The ikigay is a minimum achivement instead of giving up on everything.

jacobawojtowicz he’s saying to get yourself to the point where you aren’t living paycheck to paycheck struggling to make ends meet. That’s denial of what you truly are. Although you may change throughout life, the things you want will always remain the same. If you understand the things you want, if they are and feel right to you, then go after them. They are literally the reason you are alive. Denying yourself self-realization at every turn is a sure path to the noose.

My only gripe with this video, and this may just be up for interpretation is that Ikigai is not finding "happiness." It's about finding fulfillment, or about finding purpose. In most of the Japanese literature I have read on the subject, that's how it's framed. And I think western culture naturally equates that to happiness... which is why it gets swapped out. Maybe to some, those terms are interchangeable - However, for me, happiness, and fulfillment and purpose are all important and also all very different. I would not say you will never be "truly happy" @0:42 without all four components. Moreso, you may not be complete, but I still believe that while incomplete, someone can still be truly happy. So I would just be careful of using the terms happiness and purpose and fulfillment interchangeably like you do.

I'm Japanese but umm "Ikigai" looks like it's quite overestimated these days. I don't think it has such a difficult definition. In daily conversation it could be simply translated to something like "what you love doing". But in any case, great to know that this word spreading through the world. :)

@@ajarimccaster5747 Here in Brazil we use the term "shape inexplicável" (inexplicable shape), which means something like a state of impressive shreddedness. Sedentary people enter gyms saying they will conquer "the shape" and that will change their lives. When a guy is depressed, a common piece of advice to give him is "go and get the shape". I myself live for the shape. So yeah

There are many components in Ikigai that just feel right for me. It feels like I had always been looking for these key elements and wanted to hear it from somewhere else. Now finally I heard all I needed to hear and want to start practicing the elements in Ikigai. First off, finding something you love to do, doing something the world needs might feel small, but then they hit in the long run big time. Then there's the component of money, which I think is very important and agree on its role of happiness. These key elements of Ikigai - passion, mission, vocation, and profession - they're like the building blocks of a happy and fulfilling life.

Recently a young man jumped from 16 floor killed himself due depression.. This incident had huge impact on my soul I thought i had to do something to help those are unhappy or suffering so after intensive research I came up with 50 ways to happines and started posting them on RU-vid.. I truly appreciate this type of work because 1 million commit suicide according to world health organization every year.. keep it up.

Going by this, I have both a passion and a mission. Im a tattoo apprentice, (and we all know the world needs tattoos ;D) still relatively early days just over a year. I get by through other artwork commissions and working part time jobs to support myself through it. And although im not "financially comfortable" yet, im not gonna wait until I am before allowing myself to be happy first. Theres so much enjoyment and fulfillment to be gained from simply working towards something I love, and learning and improving along the way. The money will come, but I dont need it to be happy.

Amazing formula, I often find that loving something can come hand in hand with being good at it. If you aren't a very good public speaker, then you might not like it. This isn't always the case, but if you constantly work at it and become more comfortable, then you will most likely come to love it as your skill improves.

Often times physicians are overworked and under a lot of pressure. Most of us can screw up at our jobs without much consequence, at worst you get fired and only screw yourself up. Having other people's lives depend on your actions daily, all while having to work on a crazy hard schedule really takes its toll.
