I absolutely love this! I can accomplish an enormous amount of work within just a few hours. It's incredible how much more I can achieve compared to the entire day's worth of work that I used to complete in the past. And the best part is, once I finish my tasks, I have the rest of the day to relax, recharge, and prepare for the next day.

Hi Rian! Aren't there ways to go into theta or delta that we may want to research? I am asking this because if we want flow and productivity it makes me wonder how to hack and optimize that. Btw thank you for your videos. I incredibly appreciate the work you do.

I've experienced this problem of balancing a morning routine and getting work done, usually wake up early to workout and get done around 9 and don't start working till 11AM and feel like the time is wasted! This video was speaking to me, but when's the ideal time for that 1.5 hour workout in the afternoon or like at 8AM like for you and your reboot? @Riandoris

For those of you that have a hard time getting up: 1. Set your phone or alarm across the room so you have to get up to turn it off. 2. Change your alarm to something different and alerting or annoying every week so that you don't get used to it and tune it out or sleep in. 3. Get dressed as soon as you get up to avoid going back to bed. 4. Make it a race to get something done before a certain time, like making a coffee before 7am so that you get an adrenaline rush in the morning helping you get up. 5. DO NOT EVER sleep in, "catching up on sleep" doesn't actually work or exist. If you get up on time you will tire out and go to sleep on time. Some days will feel slow and groggy but when its a habit then you will get good sleep with little effort in the future. These are things I slowly started to discover helped me get up.

If anyone has tried this method and failed, here is the method that worked for me: For preparation, turn your water heater up to 127deg. Also, purchase a digital meat thermometer. Purchase some of those light bulbs that can be programmed to dim. Set them to gradually dim from sundown to 10pm, dimmer and dimmer, preferably a blue light to simulate moonlight, until they’re automatically off or just have a single nightlight left by 10:30pm. Every night at 7-8PM, run a HOT bath. 107-113degrees(check with your meat thermometer) Leave your phone outside of the bathroom. Get in the bath & focus your mind on the feeling of the hot water. Slowly get used to the heat until you’re submerged to your neck. While you’re in the bath, just let your mind defragment. Don’t think about anything in particular, just let thoughts arise and observe them. Let your mind wander. This is a natural process of mental organization & compartmentalization. If any strong feelings arise, just notice them. Do this until you’re too hot to continue. If your face starts to itch, it’s time to get out. 15-25 minutes is plenty. Quickly wash yourself, rinse, & get out. After your bath, your workday is done. Try to minimize any remaining tasks and rush to get in the laying position. If you eat some food, make it carb heavy. Do not use your phone, do not text or browse, do not consume short form content or RU-vid. Put on a movie & call it a night. In the morning, get some sunlight directly onto your eyes. Don’t stare at the sun, but just make sure its rays are gracing your eyes. If you’re lucky enough to have a window where the sun comes in, that’s perfect. But preferably take a 10 minute walk outside. That’s all you need. A tiny morning routine and a heavy nighttime routine.

I used to be able to get up, walk to my alarm, turn it off and return to bed without really waking up. I've always found that catching up sleep does work as long as not carried to excess. If I didn't sleep enough then an extra half hour can make the difference between being too tired to concentrate the whole day and being able to work reasonably well for most of the day.
@loganmedia1142
@loganmedia1142 Месяц назад
@@GabrielBacon Not eating for at least two to three hours before bedtime and reading for an hour or so (usually on a tablet) gets me ready for sleep. Unfortunately getting sunlight early only works for about six months of the year. The rest it's anything from an hour to over two hours after getting up before the sun rises.

I found myself to do this spontaneously whenever I had a deadline due. I'd wake up before alarm clock (sometimes middle of the night after just 3h sleep) and start working for 16h straight with one or two eating breaks. I wonder if I can do this without the stress of a deadline too, so I'll definitely try it out. I have flexible hours so I often struggle getting my day started. Putting alarm on 7.30, waking up at 8, eating breakfast while watching videos, drink a coffee, watch one more video, bathroom break, and it's already 10am. I could've gotten a third of my work done by then.

I am inclined to think that the key here is the planning the night before. You take the time to identify your most important task(s) and plan exactly how to tackle them. You will be able to relax and sleep better. Your brain will be working on the tasks as you sleep. That has to mean you are rested, focused and ready to dive right in.

I used this method for my dissertation during the pandemic, couldn't work during the day and so would start after my evening meal. Would review everything and had made myself a step by step check list that was easy to follow. Once I finished the review & preparation it was quite late so would lay down with my pc next to me, then when I woke I'd see it already and just needed to check 3 things off my list, then I could go back to sleep/power nap before my morning routine alarm where I would get. This was the only way I could write and consistently got up on time for my routine etc, for months. Huge for me and only broken cause I had discovered it late and as the deadline approached I panicked, stopped the power nap and then the morning routine to focus on getting it in on time, which of course made me burn out shortly after finishing.

This is brilliant, stumbled on it working from home and just waking up 1 minute before a meeting or something, the only thing I would add is that even if you wear glasses already, don't just stare at the screen when you wake up(especially on the phone), your eyes need to calibrate upon waking, and going into a screen, and being in that rested fresh state, you will focus so much on the screen that you will damage your vision... So drop into the task, but stare out the window while working, thinking, you need to stare at distant things, the sky, far away buildings, etc. Doing that on and off for about 10-15 minutes will protect your vision.

Step by step summary for the "fixed" morning routine: 1. Prepare the night before: Before going to bed, identify your highest priority task for the morning. Plan and organize the materials or resources you'll need to begin the task. 2. Wake up and flow: Upon waking up, aim to start working within 60 to 90 seconds, while you're still in a half-asleep state. Engage in your highest priority work immediately, without delay. Push through the initial struggle and allow yourself to enter a flow state. It may take around 15 minutes to reach a deep flow state. 3. Maintain a focused flow block: Dedicate a substantial period of time, ideally 1 to 3 hours, to work solely on your high-priority task. Minimize distractions and maintain intense focus during this flow block. Ride the wave of flow, where productivity and effortlessness are heightened. 4. Transition to recovery: After completing your flow block, transition to recovery activities. Incorporate practices that help you recover and boost flow proneness for the rest of the day, such as meditation, yoga, cold showers, or any other activities that provide relaxation and rejuvenation. 5. Balance and maintain: Throughout the day, strike a balance between focused work and recovery. Avoid neglecting recovery, as it is crucial for replenishing energy and sustaining flow productivity. Continuously assess and adjust your routine to find the sweet spot between a focused work session and sufficient recovery time.

I procrastinated a 10 page research paper for my english class until I only had 3 days left to finish. I decided that rather than loosing sleep staying up late into the night to work on the paper, I was going to go to bed early and wake up at 5am to work on it. When I woke up in the morning I sat right down in my chair and got to work. I was able to right for hours on end, and really focus effortlessly. It felt like my entire state of being was focused on just getting done this one task. This truly works, and this is also why everyone, whether they know it or not, is a morning person. No matter who you are, If you wake up hours before the rest of the people in your house, and get straight into your work, you will have zero distractions, and you will slip right into flow.

It works as long as it remains a novelty; then wears off. I find all strategies have this curve, and in end I get the work done in spite of strategizing rather than because of it. It's a lifelong conundrum but all you can do, in my opinion, is keep finding and introducing or reintroducing new strategies. No one routine/strategy will universally solve this dilemma.

I did this to when I was behind on my dissertation, it was the only way I could get any writing done. Expect I would do all the prep work before bed and then sleep with my laptop next to me so I could start asap as terrible at getting up. But after this I was actually able to consistently get up at the same time for my morning routine, every time, while using this method, unheard-of by someone who could easily lie in till noon.

This absolutely makes sense. When I was young my parents made me and my sibling sit for not less than 3 hours of studying the first thing in the morning. We hated it but also would get so much done that we may not even have done throughout the day combined. I completely lost track of this routine as I grew up though. Following the trend of doing meditation, preparing and eating pre-workout meals, doing exercise, preparing and eating post-workout meal etc etc., as soon as I woke up made me feel badly overwhelmed and also exhausted every time I finally sat to do my work. I still remember this one time I had to wake up early to do some database-related work, and I had woke up feeling groggy that morning because I had slept around 2 o'clock the previous night. So mistakenly I deleted some over 4000 records from database. So the recovery you mentioned is actually very true and thus needed. Days when I would complete my work early, I would make sure to go for a walk in the evening and that would make me 10x more productive the next day rather than not going outside for a walk.

Just set the goal the night before and then I skip breakfast and fast or drink juice while doing the "work". Reminder: "work" - the things you need to get done - can also be working out, paying bills, dealing with paperwork, studies/homework, hobbies or anything that can be a challenge of any kind especially when being "burned out" on the way to healing.

Now I wake up, stumble into work + wow... get most of my PRIME work done between 7 and 11 am, and I can meander through the rest of the day feeling 'accomplished' and doing the things on my own time..yoga meditate tea exercise etc... I've edited 5/7 chapters of my book in the past month with this routine, and I've been trying to edit this book for YEARS. No exaggeration. Finally! A morning routine that makes sense. As a mother of little ones, the only time I have to do deep focus work is to wake up before them. Due to lack of time I wake up and have to get straight to work. I found that if I do anything else before this it would kill my flow. Which is why I would get frustrated at all the advice given to journal and exercise etc. When I did that, I found my work would suffer and I'd run out of steam. The only thing I didn't work on was recovery, so this is something I will need to implement. Also found my flow caps out at the 2 hour mark.

Yeah this makes sense! I have always tried to do meditations in the morning, but it is actually when I meditate after lunch, or after a stressful meeting, that I reap the most benefits out of it. Same for cold showers. If I take them at a random point during the day, it actually helps me to reset. What you are saying here with the ram analogy is that these morning routines are almost as if you reboot your computer 3 or 4 times after you have just started it, instead of rebooting it when it is stuck.

Challenge accepted. Clearly listed out my morning goals last night. The urge to stay in bed this morning, for ten more minutes and watch some RU-vid, was intense. Instead, I dumped myself out of bed, crawled to the computer, and got to work. A groggy start followed by a bump in resistance 10 minutes in but then, bam! 90 minutes had gone by and my list was checked off. I have been a morning routine evangelist for many years. This is truly a game changer and the first time I've heard anyone critique the morning routine religion vs the entrepreneur burnout phenomenon in the same cohesive strategy. Thanks my dude!

I remembered during the pandemic I used to have to work from home so I would get up very last minute and logged in to my computer started doing work right away. Whenever I did that, I noticed I worked faster and be more productive. The flow was so smooth I actually wouldn’t stop working until 3 or 4 hours later. But after that I started crashing I would take nap and my afternoon would be the complete opposite, unproductive, sluggish, tiring. This explanation made so much sense. Gonna start trying it tomorrow but implementing the recovery part as well. Thank you!

Can utmost relate to that. Back when I went to university, I used to wake up around 6, way before breakfast and my earliest lectures, to go to the park and train taijiquan for an hour. I wanted to become a taijiquan teacher so these morning sessions have been my recovery as well as my high priority work. As I came to, I was already starting to groove, and by the end of about an hour it was starting to sound a pretty solid. I started to fatigue about an hour in (I’ll blame a lack of sleep), but I’ll definitely be able to go longer I’m sure. I didn’t hit that less than a minute after waking up, but even being disorganized and taking a couple minutes to find my way to my instrument… it worked. I’ll be doing this again :)

This piece of advice has been a game changer for me. But I question how important it is to get to work as quickly as possible, or to take a few minutes first to make the bed, use the bathroom, brew some coffee, etc first, maybe for 5 to 10 minutes, and then get to work. I think perhaps the imortant take away here is not to engage in anything that requires more brain power than the basics (reading, journaling, meditation, etc) until after an initial work block. That's been the sweet spot for me, personally.

Out of all the videos I've watched on RU-vid this is one of the rarest videos I've taken action on. I've been trying this out for 5 days and it works really well. I can get a lot done, especially if I wake up early before sunrise, the silence and darkness helps I think (that's what I feel). I don't do much of the recovery I just take a bath and eat breakfast. I don't always wake up early but getting to work on the most important task as soon as I wake up really is a game changer. Now that I know it, it kinda seems obvious but Wish I had known and started this sooner.

@@riandoris Can I ask a advice about my routine ? I will tell my so you can judge it properly (since I'm in asia where sun rise and fall at 6 AM, and I go to work in company from 9AM-6PM, and it take me nearly 30 minutes to reach there). Here is the detail: + Usually after wake up around 6:30 AM I go to brush my teeth and pooping, then around 7 AM I go out for walking as exercise for around 20~40 minutes then I would take a quick cold shower and eat breakfast at around 7:45~8:20 AM. Then nearly 9 AM would I reach the company to work until 6 PM, by that point it usually have heavy trafficking so it nearly 7 PM would I reach home for take a shower + eat dinner. Finally I rest/entertain until 10 PM would I sleep. In the video you advice us to work right away after wake up (and maintain it to around 1~3 hour for the flow), but aside from what I mention above, my job (3D animation) require me to go into company to work since my computer at home are quite crappy, so how do I even work right after wake up, or 'work' here can be other type ? The preparation the night before is the key here for sure. If you're not ready to test this method in full, just try to at least prepare your work for the next day right before you go to sleep. It's important that you have no other distractions after you've prepared the work and go to sleep. No movies, no video games, no social media - the mental preparation for your task on the coming day is the key. You've to hype yourself up for the next day. You'll wake up ready, and it will feel much easier to reach your flow state and stay in there because you're prepared mentally (and physically).

I like the wake up and work routine too. I'm an agency owner. To me, I look at the "morning routine" as a mislabeled "maintenance routine", so instead thinking about it as 'preparing for the day', I view it as maintenance/recover. You're repairing the damage you would otherwise experience without it. I work using a treadmill + standup desk, that's the right amount of stimulation to 'lock in' for work.

But but but, what happened was that the video was perfect and totally complete as it was. But I hadn't combed my hair fixed my makeup, nor adjusted the lighting etc . But I find that it is exactly on the days when I wake up and look through my notes before doing whatever else, like playing games my body will somehow automatically get bored of the games after awhile and ill find myself walking to the library with the motivation to keep studying, learning more, preparing for next class, etc.

IMHO the only way to make this work forever and easily, and find happiness in your mornings, is if you feel excited about waking up. Like somehow harness that feeling you had as a kid on Christmas morning, or waking up to play that new video game that just came out, etc., where you don't care if you're a little tired because the excitement overwhelms all other emotions. Obviously this is next to impossible in modern society, especially if you work a regular job, but I think we all have that one thing that would do this for us. Most of us just never find it. I'm still looking, but I have hope :)

Wake Up & Flow is changing my life! I admit that the struggle phase is a little more uncomfortable some days depending on what assignment I'm doing. But i pretty much always look at what I've accomplished in that morning and i feel satisfied and motivated to do it again the next morning. I get to do more than i would do during the rest of the day with a normal routine. A significant adjustment i made though, i wake up at 4:30am so that i can have more hours of uninterrupted work before my first class of the day. With nowhere to go, nobody to talk to, and nothing scheduled that early in the morning, my attention remains whole and undisturbed. Waking up super early might be difficult at first, but gradually shifting bedtime and wake up time makes it possible, i try to get 8 hours of sleep so i go to bed at 8 or 8:30pm. And i do deep breathing before going to bed and throughout the day to help me fall asleep faster at night and recover a little during the day. Give it a try!

Excellent analysis. I've always tried to cultivate a flow state for my work, and at the same time meditate as soon as possible after waking up. If I miss meditation, I do feel less able to focus, but I've noticed the sooner I get to my project for the day the better. For me a 5 to 8 minute meditation helps and doesn't take me out of alpha.

I liked this video, so what I gathered from this is the following. What you suggest is to wake up and within 90 seconds get straight into deep work on your highest leveraged task(s) (you will know the details of the tasks after writing them down very specifically the night before), then after doing that deep work for 1-3 hours you then do your health routine, etc. Very helpful thank you, Rian Doris. I am also writing this down for active recall, but I appreciate this.

Love your videos. I did this in college and it does work. That was before I found out about sun exposure. Andrew humerman says sun exposure first thing is the best way to stay energized throughout the day and sleep like a baby at night. Now upon waking i go outside. My morning routine: 6:00 wake up. Meditate. Go out for a run. Cold shower = 1 hr total. Works for me. I love the feeling of waking up for me, not for someone else. After watching this video i could take a nap mid day then get back to work hopefully in flow?

Like everything in life, balance is key. It depends on what you want from your morning routine too. For me it is for my religious, spiritual and mental wellbeing. It doesn't last so long either, 30 minutes to an hour.

Looking forward to trying this for my creative endeavors! I'm sure the passion one has or drive to get into the work will boost flow. So instead of trying to be creative late at night (as the last task I can fit into the day), I might be able to minimize the guilt of going to sleep late when I have a 9-5 to get to in the morning, dedicate some time to music in the morning, then get to my 9-5 and use the break to recover. Thank you for sharing!

You’re amazing. I represent big creators on RU-vid but as a creator myself, I’m constantly watching videos and you are going to absolutely crushed it on RU-vid. If you ever need an attorney for brand deals or as you build out your business, let me know, I would love to support you because your videos and advice have really helped me. Unfortunately of a Mom, my first hour is getting my kids ready and off to school, but I’m going to try tomorrow morning to dive straight into work as soon as I’ve dropped them off at school.

Wake up an hour earlier then usual or an hour and 15 minutes. You ll probably make excuses, bit I have to start comuting to my work at 5 20 AM because it starts at 6 AM. So If I can wake up at 4 AM I'm prety sure you can wake up earlier too. I'll probably wake up even earlier.

I’ve tried this for about a week now, I haven’t been able to get into flow or even close, just frustration, trying to push through and I end up just going back to bed and restarting my day because I was exhausted trying to be creative on my newsletter and remembering my research.
@pat4005
@pat4005 10 дней назад
What could help is this: Browse for templates for newsletters, you will not only come across lots of great ideas for examples, but the variety of layouts, color blocks, adding photos and/or images can help keep your newsletter from becoming stale, tedious or uninspired. (Which your readers will pick up on also!) Brainstorm (or at least write out) a list of things that you can choose from for upcoming newsletters. Some themes or topics you may never use, and others you may even revisit a few times per year. Don't expect from yourself a perfectly written newsletter from start to finish. Jot down ideas as they come to you, to be sorted out or expounded upon later. It will take the pressure off of getting a well crafted paragraph immediately, and allow you to feel relaxed and brain-dump more ideas in an organic and creative way. Then, have your research highlights written-down and ready to draw upon the night before, so when you wake up, you have that outline all ready to rocket into, and the template for your newsletter is also all ready for you. Just get that encouraging cup o' Joe, or tea, and all that's left to do is flesh-out those paragraphs whose outlines you already set-up. No worries about remembering your research to squash your creativity or cloud your day! 😊 You'll be close to halfway there, and then after a well-deserved break, tie up any loose ends, and then you can stretch your creative mind's muscles to layout the next upcoming newsletter but with no stress or time-crunch to bog down your creativity.

This is a fantastic idea, I am up 4:30 in the morning, start with a cup of green tea and turmeric, meditate, yoga, by 6am feed my dog, spend some time in the garden among my fruit trees and plants. Make breakfast for kids, send them to school and ready for the day.

I've found that by streamlining my morning routine down to merely two cups of tea, a shower, and a quick workout, I can quickly get into a focused flow state for whatever it is I am doing. I even skipped breakfast the past two days, because I find it harder to focus on a full stomach. With my natural decrease in appetite, combined with the use of your flow videos, me quitting my addiction, and narrowing down my focus, my productivity and my focus have gone through the roof both at home AND at my job. Mere weeks ago I was at work, anxious and dying to get out, with NO energy for my artistic passions. FLOW IS A GOD-SEND.

I would wake up and prepare a high caffeinated tea, meditate and within an hour I was alert , my dopamine was high, and that’s how I was able to be highly productive . But since I got Covid twice , I believe it affected my neurons and cognition that im struggling to feel the flow state I did before. I may have to start my day like this but I love to feel excited and motivated prior to whatever it is I want to do because my creativity is more open , which leads to more open ideas and excitement towards achieving any sort of idea. it suck’s I haven’t been the same

Thank you Rian! This is very good. Whatever morning routine you have (because we are typically habitual in nature) optimizes your morning routine. Simply put, whatever you focus on (habitually) in the morning, you will learn and get better at.

This is it... I know from expereince that I used to feel like I am loosing time doing morning routines in the first few hours of waking up instead of focusing on the actual work. This is great tips and I've heard @AlexHomozi also mention that just wake up and get to work and it just makes sense. This is another game changer that I'll be doing for the next few weeks and can't wait to give an update, will probably do a video to share the journey.

Thanks for the very clear outline to the morning routine of yoga and meditation, which I never really felt ready for first up, yet was expected by the experts. So, a sense of lingering failure and low-level despair would hinder revisiting practices at other more suitable times. A practical 'doing' activity that is also functional in nature has always felt much easier to dive into... with so much more enthusiasm.
