This is Japan in 1968 . Mary Pat and I lived in Japan from fall 1965 to spring 1966. This was our Japan....and Edwin Reischauer was the most-respected Japanese scholar in the US and Kennedy's ambassador to Japan.
Fascinating. Today's Japanese would watch this video from the 60's, as the good old times. Yet people in the video, and the commentator (BTW I own his book about Japanese history, and it is considered a seminal work for any university student starting to learn about Japan), looked at the world as fundamentally modern and detaching from tradition.
