Vocalist Michael Mayo is an astonishing improviser and musician, traversing his instrument with the ease of a horn player rippling effortlessly through his range. He is frequently called to perform and record with jazz instrumentalists who appreciate him for his ability to be another instrument in the ensemble. These collaborators include saxophonist Ben Wendel, drummer Nate Smith, and pianist Shai Maestro. He shares the advice he gives other vocalists and tells us how he feels about the divide at this point in his career.
