HISTORATHON 2024
Historathon is a year-long celebration of reading historical nonfiction. The goal is to read, discuss, and spotlight works of history, and to encourage reluctant readers to give history a try. The calendar year will be divided into three-month blocks, with each block focusing on a particular period of time:
Jan-March = Prehistory-500 CE
April-June = 500-1500
July-Sept = 1500-1820
Oct-Dec = 1820-Present
To participate, simply read a work of history that falls into the time period for each quarterly segment of the year. Read more if you’d like! Tailor the choices to your interests or try something completely new.
Historathon "Side Quests": We will also be encouraging/participating in history-related activities throughout the year, including watching historical films/documentaries, trying historical recipes, listening to historical music, etc. Feel free to join us!
We will be using the hashtag: #historathon2024

The Jefferson Bible volume is one I’ll be on the lookout for

We were fascinated by the Jefferson Bible exhibit at the Smithsonian (maybe a dozen years ago?)--so much so that we bought the edition of his Bible that the Smithsonian sold at the time. It is so interesting to imagine him cutting up his Bibles and piecing things back together, including clippings from Greek and Latin etc. rather than just English.

I wish I could have seen that exhibit!

@@revenantreads It was very small and not at all crowded-but absolutely fascinating. My son was a preteen homeschooler and he insisted that we go again and take some friends.

Now THAT'S interesting! Greek makes sense, but why Latin? Perhaps he just preferred the way the Vulgate rendered certain passages? All right, I'm definitely going to have to look into this. 😁 Wish I could have seen that exhibit!

@@BryanM.R.-wt9eb If you google Jefferson Bible and look specifically at images, you’ll see the pages with cut-outs. From a Smithsonian article: “Jefferson used a razor to cut passages from six copies of the New Testament-two in Greek and Latin, two in French and two in English-and rearranged and pasted together the selected verses, shorn of any sign of the miraculous or supernatural in order to leave just the life and teachings of Jesus behind.” Also-there is a very short video on this platform called “Indie the Jefferson Bible” that I highly recommend.

I haven't read them, but I've been to the Jefferson monument. I think the first book sounds more interesting.

"I find Jefferson to be endlessly fascinating." And I couldn't agree more. I'm hard pressed to think of another historical figure who I admire and get pissed off at in such equal measure. (Churchill, perhaps?) It really makes for a confusing but interesting dynamic, that's for sure. 😁 I've read a lot about the Jefferson Bible, but I've never looked at the actual text. I've always been a bit surprised Jefferson engaged in the exercise. After all, even if one isn't reading it devotionally, the Bible is a valuable library of texts for the insight it sheds on the cultures that composed and collected it over multiple centuries. I would have expected Jefferson to read and treat it as such, but perhaps that kind of Biblical criticism came a bit after Jefferson's time. I know it didn't really come into mainstream vogue until late in the 19th century, but perhaps it was rare as in virtually nonexistent just prior to that.

I think Jefferson wanted to somehow salvage something of Christianity for himself. I think the lesson he derived from history was that religion was largely a tool of oppression and he wanted to find a historically human Jesus that he could still garner pearls of morality and wisdom from. I haven’t read it, but it sounds like the “Jefferson Bible” was not an altogether successful experiment because so much of what Jesus did and said had to be taken out of context from the supernatural events of the gospels. Nevertheless, it’s an interesting exercise in trying to excavate secular value from a religious text. As someone who has been doing that very thing through a pagan lens, I completely sympathize with the mission. And I totally agree about Jefferson. In so many ways he’s the Founder I find most intellectual kinship with, his religious skepticism being but one example. He seems like the Founder I’d be most at ease with if I could sit down to dinner with one of them. On the other hand, he’s so much a man of his time and so hypocritical I want to shake and slap him. But his flaws are also what fascinate me. There’s something tragic about it all. He’s all too human and a reminder to me that the past is grey and complicated.

@revenantreads Ah I see, an attempt to recover the ever elusive "Historical Jesus." That's grown into an entire industry since Jefferson's time. Given the context of 1st century Judea, Schewitzer's (and later Bart Ehrman's) "apocalyptic prophet" model has always seemed most plausible to me, but some of the studies arguing for the influence of various Hellenistic philosophical schools can be interesting. I suppose there's no reason that some of each couldn't have been happening. I have one particular series on the Historical Jesus that's five volumes and counting, and a couple of the volumes are probably competing with the ENTIRE Bible in word count. It makes for interesting reading, but the sheer bulk leaves me thinking the enterprise has gotten out of hand. There's only so much evidence to analyze, after all. 😁
