I just purchased this Bible tonight at a local thrift store. It’s the black imitation leather one from Doubleday and is in absolute pristine condition…what a find! And for only $20.00
I found this bible yesterday on a 2nd hand shelf in the parish shop at a friary in Dublin. It has the same red cover as in this video. The only difference is the pages do not have the indentations to find the beginning of each new book. I bought it with 3 other small religious books for a total of €10!

What an outstanding analysis and review of the JERUSALEM BIBLE. I really enjoyed this. The JB is my favorite reading Bible. I agree with you that it is definitely not a good Bible for study (I use the RSV for study), but the single column format and the often beautiful prose makes for a dynamic and inspiring read. A great example of this can be found in 2 Corinthians 3:18. “And we, with our unveiled faces reflecting like mirrors the brightness of the Lord, all grow brighter and brighter as we are turned into the image that we reflect; this is the work of the Lord who is Spirit.” So inspirational. I too own an original 1966 edition. But my version does not have the thumb indices. In 2016, I had it rebound in hardcover leather by Leonard’s Books. I’ll try to post a photo here. I agree that the Jerusalem Bible often has beautiful prose. Even though it's somewhat free, it leaves many other modern translations in the dust. Thanks for the encouraging comment.
R. Grant Jones Yes, I agree the Jerusalem Bible “leaves many other modern translations in the dust.” Many modern translations simply remove archaic language and add gender inclusive language. The results, however, make for a bland and drab reading experience. The Jerusalem Bible, on the other hand, is both modern and literary. Its modern rendering makes it more readable while the literary elevates the Word of God.

@@RGrantJones Grant, both the 1966 JB and the 1985 New Jerusalem Bible, if purchased with ALL the book introductions, cross-references, and footnotes make for EXCELLENT study bibles for Catholics and some non-Catholics alike (face it, evangelicals and KJV-onlyists will NEVER see it that way). You should know that for Catholics, decent and COMPLETE study bibles are few and far between. The much vaunted RSV-(2)CE is NOT a single volume, I'm not even sure it's complete. And the Catholic "Bishops' Bible", aka the Revised New American Bible, is flat and prosaic in its text and somewhat suspect in its study material for a CATHOLIC study bible. The 1985 NJB is only a bit more literal than its 1966 predecessor, and I have no idea in which direction the Revised New Jerusalem Bible (RNJB) of 2019 went. I think, for Catholics, the JB or NJB (if you can tolerate the restrained use of inclusive language in the latter) are our only real choices for study bibles.
@@manfredcaranci6234Hi I discovered this JB bible from a rosary prayer that I downloaded online.I was not comfortable with the idea that I am not using the bible where the rosary prayer is quoting it so I made an intensive research.Thankfully,I managed to find it.A quick search online will not be sufficient,I literally went to different translations and compare word by word.The only problem that I have is the rosary gospel reading is using the word "shall" instead of "will".So I was curious if they are using a slightly different translations again.But it is possible that they tweaked some wording just a little?its like 95% word by word.I am now getting JB for my personal and daily readings.

I once read through the whole bible using the JB including the apocrypha about 15 years ago. The notes were very informative and helped me a lot. I also have a New American Bible (not the NABRE) that has a lot of notes too. Even though I am not a catholic, I like reading the notes on their bibles.

Where can I get the original Jerusalem Bible with notes? I have the 1966 Jerusalem Bible, no notes. Is there a study Jerusalem Bible (not the New Jerusalem Bible). Thank you.
eBay. Forget Amazon: their listings rarely show more than just a cover photo. YOU NEEEEED to see pictures. Search specifically for “Jerusalem Bible 1966.” You are looking for the Study Edition, but don’t put that in the search or you’ll miss relevant listings. As said already, consider only listings that show pictures of what you’re getting. Most of these study editions are NOT tabbed and they’re in questionable shape because they’re 54 years old at this point. Forget about “new.” They just don’t make new study editions for the 1966 JBs anymore. You may stumble across some study editions with bonded leather covers and gilt-edged pages. I have one of those, and they’re nice, but I can tell you right now that the quality of the print is uneven and too light. I can tell from looking at this video that his big red version seems to have thicker pages that better accommodate a darker, more consistent print which will be much easier on the eyes. All the good stuff on eBay requires bidding. Most of it is in usable but crummy shape, so you will have to battle for the nice ones, but even then I don’t think I’d go above $60 for something in very good shape. Happy hunting.

Thank you for another great review. As a Catholic in the UK, the Jerusalem Bible is the version we use in the liturgy and preach from. It has its good points, but I look forward to an updated lectionary with a more literal translation suitable for preaching. A more portable version of the '66 JB was published around 10 years ago under the name 'CTS New Catholic Bible' with the psalms replaced by the Grail Psalms and the divine name switched back to 'Lord' rather than 'Yahweh' (to match exactly the usage in the liturgy). It also has a completely new set of notes written by Dom Henry Wansbrough. Have you considered reviewing the Knox Bible? For a short time it was authorised for use in Catholic liturgy in the UK before the JB was published. As I'm sure you know, it's a translation of the Vulgate. I have a complicated relationship with it; in many respects I prefer it to the JB as a translation for devotional reading, although some of the renderings irk me! Thank you again.

It does NOT refer to either Joshua in the Old Testament or Jesus in the New Testament as YESHUA. It uses the Greek "Alleluia" instead of the Hebraic "Hallelujah". I'm sure I wouldn't have said that about any of the Jerusalem Bibles (JB, NJB, RNJB) or the ones with doubtful notes, like the NABRE and King's translation. Grant and a few other online presences made some convincing arguments for me to _once again_ search out and purchase a 1966 full study edition of the JB, like the one reviewed here. It's not like I was unaware of what I'd be getting, given the JB's penchant for _very dynamic_ equivalence, at times bordering on paraphrase. Let me just throw out a few examples of renderings that for me remain hard to swallow. (1) 1 Samuel 13:1 this verse concerns Saul's age when he ascended to the throne and how long he held the kingship. The actual numbers are lost, unfortunately, and some translations use ellipses in place of the missing age and duration of his reign. The JB simply left the entire verse out of the book. (2) Tobit 2:12 "March the seventh". Really? There's no way the writer of Tobit knew about the month of March! (3) Matthew 5:3-11 "Happy are...." instead of "Blessed are" for the Beatitudes. (Well at least now you know why some churches in the late 60s, early 70s hung banners in the congregation area with the "Be(Happy)Attitudes". (4) Matthew 16:17 "Simon, son of Jonah, you are a happy man!" as opposed to "Blessed are you, Simon, son of Jonah." Ugh! (5) 1 Corinthians 7:2 "but since sex is always a danger....." This one's my favorite and probably THE LAMEST free rendering they could've come up with. The only thing the JB has in its favor over the NJB is that it does not use gender-inclusive language. In all other respects, the 1985 NJB is superior.

@@RGrantJones Grant, you are correct. The notes and book intros are from the French edition, but the text was LARGELY from the original languages. Where there was doubt, the French was consulted for guidance.
A great translation at that! the original french scholars did great work. The english translators did an amazing job of bringing the beauty and wisdom out of the text and notes
I should also add that it really wasn't even a French to English translation, the original text was used and the french was consulted as a base when there was confusion or ambiguity. Sorry you got rid of a great book...
