Sexual abuse and other types of abusive relationships is a universal social problem affecting all institutions in society at large. It is present in the Catholic Church, and in the Society of Jesus, in the form of clergy sexual abuse and other forms of abuse. The Society of Jesus has apologized to victims/survivors and accompanies them on the road to justice and healing.
In 2018, Fr. General approved the establishment of the Promotion of a Consistent Culture of Protection (PCCP) project, which oversees the implementation of robust policies, training, and formation. Protocols of welcoming complaints and accompanying victims are now in place in Provinces and Regions of the Society of Jesus worldwide.
A new safeguarding training and formation programme that is rooted in Ignatian spirituality and married to most recent scientific research on successful actions that mitigate abuse in all communities is now being rolled out in all the works of the Society of Jesus.
Promoting the dignity, care, and respect of each and all in our works, especially minors and the most vulnerable, is core to our mission of justice and reconciliation, and is indeed a frontier work of the Society of Jesus today.
