Merlin continues to work on the 1999 VW Jetta ute conversion pick up truck. There is a lot of fabrication that goes into getting this truck in order. It is coming together nicely thanks to the help of Mark Smyth at Smyth Performance. Merlin can't wait for you to see it when it is all finished!

This VW car in Europe is called Bora and the 1.9TDI engine is one of the best and long lasting and economical vs what you get out of it. A Bora was desired by me to buy but because of the limited space in the back changed my thought. Looks like the kit works very good and you Merlin are doing a professional job with it; so your idea to build it and the way is looking is really nice to me. Maybe some upgrade you will need for the back coils and shocks absorbers (dampers) for more stiffness when heavy loaded but for sure you will find the best solution.👍

Congratulations Merlin on making it in to the Tow truck Olympics ! ! That truck is so awesome years back I could build one of them. But after 26 years of being in a wheelchair it just took a toll on my body. That luke my shuttle bus I am making in to a RV. I have everything to do it. I can't find anyone to do it. Down he in Central Missouri people just don't want to do a thing. I have the money to pay them they just won't do it. Again that is a awesome truck.

Nice clean work. A lot of years ago I built a pickup out of a Chevy Wagon. Cut the back of behind the front doors, sealed it up and used a VW van glass for the back window. Made a wood box for the back. Fun ride.

Keep the spare tire compartment. You can keep all sorts of stuff secure in there. Jack, lug wrench, tools, gloves, tow rope, mini compressor, tire patch kit, trailer coupler, etc.

Old school racer here, use to drag race, built engines for stock cars until I got drafted in the 60's. Worked as heavy equipment mechanic for a few years and for Mack truck for another 15. Love seeing the combination of diesel & kit pickup. I follow Alex Taylor & Lucky on HR garage, saw the video of you showing her how to drive a 22(??). I wish I had had a girl back in the day like Alex, she's funny, devoted to the car craze, and has a super understanding of how things work. Now I've found you and your projects. Keep up the good work!

Awesomeness! My only concern with cutting out the spare tire well is adding the structural integrity back in afterwards. Unibody construction works together, as a system, especially when it’s German engineered VW. Personally, I’d relocate the spare to a mount at the front of the bed, right in the middle. Given the intended use as a parts hauler, having the spare tire at the front of the bed would give you a cushion to keep any errant parts from smashing into the front of the bed/custom cab window. Also, it would facilitate a full size spare, instead of an emergency donut. Or, you could just forgo the spare and use run flat tires.

Agreed. Keep the tire well, make a hatch in bed floor to access it for more storage. Relocate tire. Personally I’d fab a mount that swings away to be able to drop tailgate. Or go to junkyard to cut out the recess in the back side of older suv that has spare mounted there, and French it into bed floor. Either on side or middle front per your suggestion

Nice job!!! Reminds of the Volkswagon Diesel Pickup trucks... always wanted one of those! I had a diesel Rabbit for about 10 -12 years and I consistently got 50+ mpg out of it. That car was so good I drove it 264K miles before I put a clutch in it and brakes. That was a well built vehicle!!!

A pair of Vice-Grip 7LW pliers is great for when you need a second person to hold a wrench since their triangular jaws will hold the nut or bolt without marring the head leaving it all serrated and jagged. They've become my favorite go-to locking pliers in the workshop. A piece of duct tape holding the bolt in place when you don't want to tack weld it can make getting the nut started and the Vice-Grips attached easier. Don't have to worry about harming your dummy holder plus the pliers don't cry or bleed if you mess up. Best!

I had an '84 diesel VW Rabbit back in the late '80s. Loved that car! My brother-in-law had a similar year Rabbit Pickup. Pretty much the Ute but from the factory. Very cool build!

I have a made in Japan Toyota Truck. Not a Hilux. The original mini pick-up. Your Jetta is a fabricated imitation, well done job for you Merlin!! Many "big" truck owners do not work there trucks, only for commuting. My 1986 truck was a farm truck and has only 85000 klicks on it. I had it rebuilt 6 months ago and have used it very little. Everywhere I take it I get lots of attention and likes. Your new VW truck rebuilt to your satisfaction will also give you lots of likes in many ways. Congratulations on a fine job, made in the USA

Great video, brought back many good memories for me. Back in the early 1960s at 14 years old I bought a 1950 Pontiac 2 door with a flat head 6 cylinder for 15 dollars to drive the old logging roads around our cabin. With the idea my Dad had to turn it into a pickup truck and the help from his friend who worked the CCC camps during the depression we got it done. We used it for many years dragging logs hauling wood and just driving around the woods. Thanks again for the video I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I love the sound of that ALH just doing it's thing. I've owned 3 TDI's so far and need to look in that direction for a clean MkIV body to put a drive train into from my previous Jetta. The current wagon has 405k miles and running well with lots of love from a local TDI guru, the body is suffering from northern winter road conditions. Thank you for doing this video documenting this conversion. Great job!

Very cool build! It’s always irked me that you can’t find utes in America, especially since you could drive a few hours south and see them on dealer lots. Yours is cooler, more efficient and reliable than any examples for sale in Chihuahua for sure!
