The control box needs to look roughly like the topdown view of the wrecker with the switches situated in the approximate location and direction of the winch, much easier to find while doing complex winching

Yeah, I thought that too. It was just bodged together by the people of Harbor Freight though. If I were there (or had one of those winches) I'd offer to make an actual all in one unit, or maybe an app for their phones, or both.

The control panel in the truck is set up to correspond with the location on the truck. The handheld controller is labelled and will be easy enough to adapt to. I just don't like that you can't run more than one winch at a time with it.

As long as you're working on what Matt refers to as the world's biggest wrecker, maybe you should install the world's biggest gas gauge right in the middle of his dash, complete with flashing lights and one of those red buttons that says, don't run out of fuel ! 😂

Chad, when I was working with those Deustch connectors sometimes the factory insertion/removal tool didn't always work correctly. What we did instead was make up our own removal tool from an 8p nail. We sanded down the tip of the nail until it would go inside of the connector and then a sharp tap with a hammer and the wire would come out unscathed. We used this on 22AWG so you will need to adjust sizing for 18 or 16 AWG wire. If you ever need a removal tool and don't have one handy... Oh, and by the way 2.0 readers are just fine. I use 2.25's or sometimes 2.50's. Take care!

Trouble shooting electrical problems is so much fun. Years ago I was a electronics tech in the Air Force. I spent a month TDY at McGuire AFB re-wiring a Large Board Projector that had a fire.

A tiny dab of dielectric grease on the pin before you push it in is the ticket for the deutsch connectors., I have a largish syringe full of the grease and just dip the terminal into the end of the syringe before inserting

Just a simple wiring job ha ha. I've repaired a wiring harness partially melted in a dash. It was a pain. You guys creating one from scratch are totally amazing. Especially when you add all that extra equipment.

Chad you should hide a small box up under the dash with spare critical parts. Relay' s etc maybe even cheap tester. So when Matt calls from the trail you can surprise him with a hidden electric rescue box. ✔️

Deutsche connector tools are common enough now, most parts stores have the plastic tools in stock. Any near by John Deere dealership should definitely have some on hand as well. I feel bad for Chad, it would eat at me as well, until it got pinned correctly! LOL

I find that if you dip the wire and the pin in rubbing alcohol it’ll slide through the back of the connector easily.

I made many a multi-wire connector wiring loom while working in the shipyard. Alcohol is really your friend putting these type of connectors together.

@@lanceleavitt7472 Lance, I found that during my drinking days, a few beers, and I do mean just 2 or 3, could motivate me to get to work on something. I believe it was something about the sugar in the alcohol turning to instant energy. I don't remember wiring anything after having 9 or so beers, but if the magic smoke came out later, I wouldn't be too surprised. 🙂

I had never heard the term Adel Clamp. I work at Oshkosh Defense, and we use those all the time on our vehicles, but we call them P-Clips. Ours are normally a dipped coating as opposed to a rubber sleeve. Two P-Clips sharing a bolt/stud is a Butterfly.

I’m glad to see the professionals put the wrong connectors on and pin the wrong position too. Biggest connector I have on my rig is an 8 pin, it took me three tries to get it all in the right place.

Matt you should add a small roll bar underneath the brake master cylinder so that you can wire tide the wiring harness and keep it off your cab

I was in the Marine Corps and worked on the electricals of F4s. Those giant Cannon Plugs are a PITA, both inserting and removing pins. You're doing a great job. No way Matt could do all this without you.

Matt: "So the reason that we need this cab to come off so easily is there is no way for me to grease and maintain the front drive shaft. with all the connectors that need to be unplugged to remove cab, it sounds like there needs to be a check list to check off then signed off before lifting the cab and another check list to install the cab. Each connector and lines will be tagged with a number to match a number on check list. This will be a must DO NOT DEPEND ON SOMEONES MEMORY TO DO IT!

I sent Paul and Matt email awhile ago (before Matt got his controller from Badlands) and suggested they use a wireless crane controller for the winches. By connecting the hardwired winch controls to the crane controller there would only be 1 wireless signal to deal with. I thought it would at least be worth a look. For Paul, he would also need electric actuated solenoids to make his work.

Agreed. The Harbor Freight solution is super hacky. The RF signals are interfering with each other. They're not designed to be operated simultaneously like that. I understand the HF sponsorship, but the control solution just isn't right for this application.

I have seen people that worked 30-40 years as car mechanics and feel 2 wires are at least one too many, they would needed psychology help for the rest of their lives just watching the awesome job you guys are doing. Chad finish with the harness and connection is more like art then wiring. You make it look so easy making a complete electric system at this complicated vehicle with all the winches and stuff. Do you know how many meters cable you have used totally ? I guess it is some hundred meters, qt a car there is less then 10 meter long 🤔🤗👏

Just a little tip why don’t you use self amalgamating tape as in waterproof tape it stretches and locks onto itself in the UK use on satellite collections I would imagine in America used on TV connection external instead of PVC tape on the sock because it only comes off when damp

We have the same kind of plugs and pins on my ship in the navy. We call them cannon plugs. They can be really easy and really annoying to work with so I feel your pain

a good place for the rear-steer conntrols would be a set of the paddle-shift controllers. out of the way, but close at hand.

The rear steer control is a handle (like a shifter) with switches in it. Should be quite easy to work.

You guys do great work. One question... why not use cannon plugs on the passenger firewall for the computer and for the accessories? I realize that there is more than one way to do something right, but I'm just curious. I worked on planes and choppers for years and have been wrenching on my 6 military trucks for a couple decades and have really come to appreciate the reliability and ease of use of cannon plugs... especially when trying to remove things like cabs and engines. First saw you guys when you wired the golden nugget... keep up the great work.

The computer is only a few inches inside the firewall so having 2 connections so close to each other made no sense especially since the harness comes out of the firewall so easily.

It has been a pleasure watching the real time development of this vehicle. You all are doing great work with actually a minimum amount of redoes compared to projects I have done. Now for the mystery. At what point is this thing going to get some paint? Or is it to early for that luxury.

Matt has said in previous comment responses that rust isn't an issue in Southern Utah. Steel gets a surface patina, but nothing structural. Time will tell.

the whole electrics are "one" system , personally my setup would be a separate trees and separate chapters there is always a way to control these sections by a couple of main switches . the way it is now matt needs to get chad for every little problem

In reagards the error with the wireless controller for the winch, check the manual they normally shows you how to select a different wireless channel, that way you might be able to use 2 controls at the same time
