The longer you play and wider your taste in music gets the more you appreciate single coils. I went from LP’s to tele’s and strats and I rarely care to pick up a humbucker guitar.
Nice video . I read the article by Josh about stacking and thought I had to have this pedal . The guys at the guitar store really raved about it and they were right , I love it
Great demo...maybe the best demo of any pedal I ever watched. I just got a used MG and I googled "how to get the most out of...." Your vid came up and now I am a subscriber. Great job, loved the format and short examples without any 'look at me' BullSh!+.... Great job
this is the best demo of MG (I see I lot of demo videos of mg because I want to buy a bluesbreaker pedal) your video is the best because your amp is very clean, and your conf is the same as I use for years! this clean tone IS A REAL CLEAN TONE! thanks man!
Great demonstration, I really needed that. I don't have a morning glory but I do have drives like you're describing and I like your presentation, I don't think you change if this is your standard. Of course variety doesn't mean changing and this is the first of your videos I've watched but I will be watching more. Thanks for making it! 🤘
Hey Eric, I really appreciate the feedback mate! I'm still in the process of figuring out the right balance of everything with the channel and comments like this really do help 🤟 I'm also really glad this video was helpful for you as that is the point after all! Cheers mate 🤙
I watch a lot of pedal vids and this one was the best I’ve seen. Love the pedal showing settings while we just hear the guitar tones. Well done, and yes, I have this pedal.
You make really good demo videos Joel! Audio is great, nice tones, and great playing without overplaying. I like your relaxed presentation. I keep thinking about picking one of these up but I don't have a spot on my board at the moment. May have to fix that 😅
stumbled across this video and saw this is a newer channel…man…you’ve got something special here. Keep searching for your unique voice, hone in on it, carve your niche and you’ll blow up sooner than later.
That was a great video. I just subscribed. Unfortunately Josh at JHS never really shills his own stuff. Which is good, but I wish he would occasionally plug something of his own just for our knowledge of his pedals. This was a good video with good descriptions and demos.
Of course he’s going to shill his own shit first of all, he has a product to sell, second of all technically RU-vid influencer. And I don’t know how many videos of him you watched, but he also talks a lot about other things and other things he likes. I’m not like a big JHS fanboy, but ultimately like of course he’s going to shill his own things, lol
I just grabbed one as well, thanks for the video, it might be the best demonstration of Morning Glory soundscapes I've seen so far (and there are quite a lot of videos about this pedal). + your vioce and manner is very calming, reminds me of Bill from Chords of Orion.
Hey mate, thanks for the kind words! I think you'll be really happy with the morning glory. For me, I think it's got the perfect overdrive sound. Cheers! 🤟
I agree brother, I have the Double Barrel as well, and it will not leave my board [Morning Glory side is always 'on']. For me personally, and the cover tunes my band plays, it's a game changer!
Just grabbed one…I thought about the Greer Lightspeed. But I had $100 credit at Sweetwater and they didn’t sell that one. So went with this! I have a newer 68 Custom Pro Reverb and have to use a Attenuator to get a natural OD tube break up. But it has such high head room to get there at 7. So this actually fills the bill for first on board. My V1 Jekyl and Hyde is too mid and character to always have on. So I’ll be running that after. Good to have a variety! But I’ll be using this to also push my break up on my amp. I really needed a clean boost, but went with this to cover all my territory. Nothing sounds better than my natural tube break up so far! So looking forward to see what I can get out of this Vs just buying a top of line boost pedal for $125.
I play some ambient baritone stuff in our set when I’m not playing bass and my pedal board is just the morning glory, a cloudburst, and an empress buffer+. I just plug into my bass amp (gk 1x15 200w combo) turn up the treble and turn the tweeter on and it’s fantastic. Powerful low end kept intact while still getting that sparkley crunch when I dig in. I gotta get that little footswitch though, the gain switch is tricky to hit on stage 😅
Joel, I’m just finding your channel. That was a great description and demonstration of how to use this pedal. I have the Retro Morning Glory that was released not long ago. I’m in the process of rebuilding my board trying to figure out which direction I want to use to stack. This video was great timing!
Hey mate, thanks for the kind words! I'm glad this video was helpful to you 🤙 That's the point after all! Those retro MG's look killer! I'd love to know how you end up stacking it on your new board 🤙 cheers mate!
Love your video. Out of the many other videos out there I like yours the best. Straight to the point great sound and calm monotone voice, that is easy to understand and follow. I liked and subscribed. Rock on !
@@joelwilson7908 Oh, and thanks for emphasizing that the pedal plays so well when directed into an already mildly distorted tube amp. It does! I'm enjoying it so much!
Thanks for the video Joel! I was thinking of picking one of these up and this was really useful. I appreciate your editing and delivery, you’ve got a sub from me!
great demonstration. I really appreciated you focused more on some rhythm style playing, chording or arpeggios, rather than lead tones that are in so many. As that is more the way I'm looking at this pedal myself.
Hey Caleb, yeah it really does stack so well! I'm keen to check out a couple of other bluesbreaker-style pedals to compare, especially the Browne Carbon, but the addition of the red remote/2nd channel on the MG is just awesome and tough to beat, I reckon!
Hey James, thanks for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed! I do actually play in a band and we've just released our first 3-track EP on streaming services! Our name is the "Topshop Tyrants" and the EP is called "The Sunset Sessions," if you're interested! Cheers mate 🤙
Bouncing around between overdrives...I'm the lucky guitar player who took a 6 year break and came back when all the best JHS tech was in version 4. I was like, "Who's Josh Scott?" Now my world is turned upside down. Lmfao I have my first Overdrive pedal coming tomorrow. ❤ Morning Glory forever.
This is a great and instructive video. I have MG myself and agree, it sounds amazing on my 59 bassman. The problem is the hum noise. It’s unbearable. I already sent on MG back to JHS customer support (outstanding support) but the second one I received still has the same issue.
Great video. I love my JHS Morning Glory along with a Red Remote. I use those along with a JHS @ndy Timmons pedal in front of a clean Fender. That combination covers everything I need. Like you said at the end of your video, I've searched for years trying to find a pedal that would reproduce the sound I was hearing in my head. As soon as I tried the Morning Glory, I was like, "This is it!". Many overdrive pedals give you a mid-range hump, which is something I didn't want. However, I do use a Boss SD-1 when I am getting dirt from the amp.
Hey Randall, thanks for watching mate! Glad you enjoyed 🤟 Yeah, I've found that the mid-hump overdrives don't work for me unless I'm boosting into another drive pedal (or amp, like yourself). I definitely lean more towards the transparent/scooped kind of tones. And I've actually never tried the JHS Andy Timmons or Boss SD-1, but they're both on my list! Cheers mate 🤙
Thanks mate, really appreciate it! 🤙 And yeah, the 60's spec tele really stood out to me when demoing it. I'm a sucker for burst finishes and love the double-bound look, but also I find the fatter neck profile more comfortable than other teles (but that could just be because I played a Gibson for years beforehand). Cheers mate! 🤟
This pedal is based on a Marshall Bluesbreaker pedal. By leaving the gain low I found it OK and usable. I then got the Browne Amplification Carbon also based on the Bluesbreaker. It is just incredibly better so, totally transparent thru the entire range. I sold the JHS.
Hey Paul, I've been really curious to try the Carbon. I'm seeing amazing reviews for it everywhere so thanks for the suggestion! I'll see if I can grab one around where I am sometime soon 🤙 cheers mate!
Great video mate. Well done. Just subscribe your channel. And FINALLY, (if I have not misunderstood) someone who records with a REAL microphone and not some IR's system... :D
Nice video. I recently found my happy place with a Greer Lightspeed after using the MG for a while. Although I only play through a katana so I’m sure a tube amp would differ.
Hey James, cheers mate! The greer lightspeed is definitely an overdrive that's on my wishlist - I'd love to be able to demo one. And I've heard really great things about the Katanas. Seems they're a long ways ahead in their field 🤟
Thanks for this demo - great playing man! I've been on the fence about grabbing one of these but between this video and the fact that they're on sale on Sweetwater this week I think my mind is made up! I was wondering if you wouldn't mind sharing the settings you're using on the Hot Rod Deluxe as that's what I play through as well. Thanks again!
Hey David, glad you enjoyed mate! I honestly don't think you can go wrong with the morning glory, especially if you're playing through a fender-style amp. And sure thing, my amp settings are (on the clean channel/no bright switch): - volume: 2 - treble: 8 - bass: 5.5 - mids: 4.5 - reverb: 3 - presence: 8 Hope this helps mate 🤙
@@joelwilson7908 Thank you for the response man - really appreciate it! Just pulled the trigger this morning, very excited! Seriously though, I've watched the intro jam on this video 5 or 6 times in the last 24 hours, really cool song you put together! Keep up the content, I'll be watching!
@@retsinam That's awesome David! Let us all know how it goes when it arrives and what you think 🤙 And the opening jam is actually an older idea I wrote with my band, so maybe it's time to dust it off again for some gigs! Cheers mate 🤟
Hey, great video about Morning Glory. Actually I was wondering why JHS made Double Barrel with these 2 exact pedals, at first I thought it was just a convenience of having 2 overdrives in one enclosure, but after your explanation I understand why. By the way, it may just be me, but it seems that in your videos the left side of your face is getting less light, just an avarage viewer's opinion.
Hey Rost, thanks mate! I'm glad you enjoyed and that the video was useful for you 🤙 That's the goal, after all! And thanks for the feedback about the lighting! I'll keep it in mind for the future videos. Cheers mate! 🤟
I’ve tried my MG last…but I find it just kind of gets compressed and def messes with some of my higher distortions like a RAT or Shredmaster. Probably work better at lower volume Overdrives stacked. I usually run my MG first as a always on boost with some sparkle at low gain breakup. Then a TS808/Shredmaster pedal 2 in 1, RAT, Plexi MIAB. The last pedal is more a preamp of I want to switch over to that sound. So really the Rat does a lot of the lifting as a dynamic distortion tone. I thought about adding a boost in the front so then I can drive it harder. But so many things you can do…just depends on your play style. I try to cover a big of everything. So my board tends to have both the low to mid gain going. Then I cut the mid gain pedal and leave the low on all the time and switch to my high gain pedals and boosts. Preamp pedal is their fit flavor to fit a full song Vs at random. So I put it last in my chain as it would effect the entire signal and has full EQ. I can’t really find a way to fit a Klon unless I ditch my TS808/Shredmaster combo. As it just becomes overkill with 8 different distortions and gains lol. Not to mention the Germaium fuzz and Treble booster running before. I’ve seriously thought about ditching the fuzz first..and buying a silcon Big Muff to make life easier running that later. On a clean amp I’m trying to do one half the normal fender stacked OD thing and on other side the TS808 and Plexi thing. So it’s a even split vs one simple board. Now I understand having a midi pedal, or a send return to program when it gets that wild lol.
To translate, that just means the pedal doesn't compress much, or perhaps only compresses a certain frequency band; I would guess the low end. It's a great pedal, it's just the guitar player words are not very precise. One of the reasons why there are so many pedals that sound pretty much the same. It's a good pedal though, I have one.
I love the tones you’re getting with the pedal. I hear a delay on as well. What was your chain of fx?I’m assuming you’re using the hot rod deluxe? Were you micing the cabinet and if so with what? Is there anything special about the Morninglory pedal that you were using or If you purchase a new one will it sound like yours? Thanks for all your help!
Hey David, thanks mate! I'm glad you enjoyed 🤙 The delay on this particular recording was just a standard logic pro stereo delay I put in in post-production as I was playing straight into the front of the amp with no other effects (aside from reverb in the amp), but typically I use a way huge aqua puss (mark 3) for some slapback. And yep, I'm using the Mark 4 version of the Hot Rod Deluxe mic'd with a Shure Sm57, with all the EQ coming from the amp itself. My amp settings are: clean channel with volume (2), treble (8), bass (6), middle (5), reverb (3), and presence (8) And the Morning Glory is the standard V4 from JHS, so if you were to pick one up it more-than-likely should sound the same. Hope this helps, mate! Cheers 🤟
Hey Peter, thanks mate 👍 glad you enjoyed! I personally would have the order Tumnus --> Morning Glory --> Deco, with the morning glory set to an always on and the tumnus being used as a boost. Hope this helps!
Excellent video and great performance! I have the Morning Glory V4 and it’s a great overdrive! I stack it with a Tumnus Deluxe after (like you did with you klon) but also I like to stack with another BluesBreaker pedal after like the Wampler Pantheon (mid gain settings with more compression)and the result is a wonderful lead tone!(of course you should work the bass and the treble knobs in the pantheon so it doesn’t sound mushy or muddy… By the way, which version is your Fender Hot Rod Deluxe???
Hey mate, thanks for the kind words. I'm glad you enjoyed! That's interesting you stack the MG with another bluesbreaker. In general, I tend to prefer more transparent overdrives, so that might be something I should look into. The Browne Carbon, maybe... 🤔 But my hot rod is the recent IV model. Hope this helps! Cheers 🤙
Likewise stacking an MG and Tumnus. It was a bit of a toss up which order I preferred but ended up favoring the MG into the Tumnus. Both great pedals on their own and both honoring some legendary pedals in the Blues Breaker and Klon, respectively.
@@lescaster2179 i used exactly the same: Morning Glory into Tumnus…killer tones!!!

I found something, latest production of Morning Glory V4 has buffered bypass instead true bypass, I got one as present. Buffer changes bypassed signal quite significantly :/
I didn’t know it won awards. I can’t even name one let alone “countless awards”. What has it won? I mean, it is my all time favorite and is almost always on…… but I don’t think that counts as an award
Hey Michael, I believe what they're referring to is being included on lists such as "best gear of the year", "best overdrive", etc. I'm with you, though. Off the top of my head I'm not sure I can name a single "official" guitar pedal/gear award... but I'd love to know if there was one out there! Either way, cheers mate 🤙
I usually use mid to hi gain distorsion from an Orange Amp, also use a TubeScreamer as boost for higher gain stuff, do you think the Morning Glory would work fine for that too? Knowing the Orange amps are Mids Heavy, it makes sense to me using a more transparent OD, but would like an opinion before buying.
I really like this pedal. You're right, it was the foundation for the sound that was in my head. Question - how do you stack your Morning Glory? Do the other overdrives go before or after?
Hey mate, thanks for watching! I'm glad this was the pedal you were looking for 🤙 Because I play mostly into clean amps, I like to use the MG last in my drive chain, always on with gain set to around 2 o'clock to give me that subtle edge-of-breakup tone. I then have my other drive pedals before the MG as I've found the tone is more consistent with everything being stacked into it. And then if I need a post-drive boost for a solo I use the red remote to kick on the 2nd drive stage. Hope this helps, mate! 🤟
Sorry but ‘adding chime and gloss’ is shaping tone no matter how you dress it up. The term transparent overdrive is one of the most overused and misleading descriptions attributed to these pedals. That aside - nice tones! :D
In other words it doesn’t change the character or original tone of your signal after engaging the pedal on, it can be used to add subtle gain or brightness or darken the tone , hope that helps explain it some
