The part in Dark Crystal when the Emperor dies and crumbles to dust while trying to scream 'I am Emperor' scared me as a kid but I loved it. That movie still looks amazing so no wonder you thought it was from the 90s. Timeless. Thanks for covering this exhibit!

So many good memories from The Muppets! As a kid I always looked forward to the next Jim Henson production be it Sesame Street, The Muppet Show, Muppet Movie, Muppet Caper, Muppets Take Manhattan, The Dark Crystal (love it!), Labyrinth, Muppet Christmas Carol... I remember hearing of Jim Henson's death while on the monorail platform at WDW. I always think of him when I board it... Such an amazing talent!

I always call them the Muppet Trilogy in the 90's. You had Treasure Island. Christmas Carol and Muppets in Space right after Henson died. I remember Christmas Carol being more emotional of the three because it was right after he died and it just hit you in the feels.

Me and my brother saw the traveling art of the Muppets in the mid 1980's at Discovery Place in Charlotte, N.C. Mrs. Henson was there too. They gave my brother some Muppet goodies that were in a display case with his stuff.

A few vlogs ago I suggested that a healthy competition take place between you and your buddy Daze. Vlogging the same sights. Ironically, Daze recorded this exhibit a couple of days ago. You both have a unique way of telling a story. I look for an informative, educational, background that is entertaining to watch. Nice touch having your dad included.

Yes! The Henson Performance Control System(Aka Big1)! This bad boy was built from the ground up inside the Jim Henson Creature Shop. I believe this particular unit was used for the first two teenage mutant ninja turtles movies in the 1990’s to operate the actors masks. The early prototype of this was used on the hoggle animatronic puppet in labyrinth which is currently on display in Scottsboro, Alabama at the Unclaimed Baggage Center. The WALDO System is actually a telemetry suit for torso & arm movement as used in the movie short circuit for the Johnny 5 robot puppet.

I was just wondering if they were gonna have a section for the Dark Crystal, and then you mentioned it. And Fraggal Rock was my all time show. Even today I sing the theme song. And let's not forget Labyrinth, such a great trippy movie. My daughter absolutely loves it and we both sing the songs any chance we get. My childhood and my kids all in one building. Very neat! I'm about 15 years older than Adam, and was a fully adult person, in the middle of my professional career, when Henson died. I got home from work that night, and PBS was running a retrospective of his life. I decided to sit down and watch it... and about 10 minutes into it I was bawling like a baby. It's still hard for me to think about even now. He was a true treasure.

Fraggle Rock is my favorite Jim Henson show from when he was alive, even if I didn't get to watch it until Netflix was a thing. The Muppet Show and Sesame Street are still around, in new iterations in some cases, but no one has attempted to continue the adventures of the fun loving Fraggles. Yes, I know Doozers existed (exists?) as a new way to see into the lives of the hard-working, always logical Doozers, but no Fraggles appeared. :( I miss Mokey, Gobo, the Trash Heap, Sprocket, and ESPECIALLY Cantus. P.S. "As the pain sweeps through... I'll be there for you-oo-oo as the world falls down." - David Bowie (as Jareth), Jim Henson's Labyrinth, c. 1986

It's interesting to see his interest in architecture in some of his earlier sketches to which look liked it evolved to visual effects in the club concept. Kinda wish they showed some Sam and friends, his first foray into the muppets which dates back to 1955 and had a proto version of Kermit who wasn't even a frog yet but retains the Kermit image. Thanks for sharing Adam.

Well, it makes sense that George Lucas has something to do with it cuz he did use Yoda, who was also a puppet, not only Yoda, but the Ewoks (who had midgets in 'em, I know), C3-PO, R2-D2, etc., & a very good amount of puppets in his films, as well.

Thank You so much for this - I can't make it to LA but would have loved to have been there to see this exhibit - thanks for taking us there - I have been to Leland a small little building - the lady that use to host it was awesome she recently passed but I am sure those working there can still share lots of the info she did - it is filled with books and photos and some articles and a few puppets - it was so fun to be where Kermit was born - some other things cool in that area too - I also have been recently to Atlanta Art of Puppetry Center - half of the exhibit is Henson - the other half is puppetry around the world - also interesting but like you I got lost in the Henson side first time thru was for photos and reading the info but after visiting the other side I told my husband I have to go back thru and just be among all my friends - I was a bit older than the Sesame Street target audience but my sister was so we watched it and I enjoyed it as much or more - and then the Muppets of course - so much a favorite - they had also had a Labyrinth traveling exhibit there when we visited - they had some of it and Dark Crystal and any Muppet involved program - I think there were pictures but there was not a Yoda puppet to see - Frank Oz was Yoda and that was probably why Lucas helped with the exhibit because Henson's Monster Co had lots of help and input with that series
