While anticipating my future JMT hike (I am in the lottery) I have watched many films by hikers. This video is by far the best. The trail is the protagonist, not the hiker/filmmaker. There is no whining, or boasting just the trail...well done, thank you, Tim.
Good luck with your plans! NOBO is pretty easy to get a permit, especially if you are somewhat flexible with your dates. You might also look into the High Sierra Trail which also visits Whitney- kind of a cousin to the JMT
@@onelovemon1784 I made it SOBO to Red's Meadows. I was feeling ill and had been around people with Covid prior to my trip. I never got really sick, though and will be in the lottery again in a few months.
Thanks Tim for a great documentary. I had become so focused on the logistics of my trip that I'd forgotten how much fun it is going to be. This is probably the most relaxing thing I've ever watched...
THIS is one of my FAVORITE JMT vids on RU-vid...no obnoxious music and unecessary chatter to spoil the peaceful visual beauty and serenity of the hiking discovery...YEA!!! Thank You for sharing...subscribed. I've yet to go, but I hope to do my own NOBO in 2018.
Absolutely beautiful. Loved the combo of Google earth and your fabulously captured scenes, the sparse commentary and spot on music selection. Beautiful guitar. Thank you, for this balm for my soul. Greetings from Australia.
You know? I've seen that photo of TR and John Muir a thousand times and for some reason I never noticed you. With all the equipment and supplies you carried you are one spry gentleman. Outstanding work. Everything about your video is wonderful. Thanks.
Speaking of Teddy you might remember him giving a campaign speech but unable to read his notes because they were covered in blood due to the fact that he had just been shot. Sort of like you filming up on Clouds Rest with bilateral exposure.
You got some absolutely great pics and video on this trip. Ill be going Northbound out of Cottonwood lakes this Aug, so I really enjoyed this video, its very close to the itinerary I have planned, with many of the same campsites and just about the same time frame of trip +/- 22 days total. Thanks very much for sharing, if I have half as good a time as you seem to have had, Ill call it a huge success.
This was absolutely fantastic to watch! Thank you so much for the care and time you put into your hike and your documentation of it. I felt like I was there with you!
Liked your video very much , reminds me when I was younger and able to backpack & flyfish, but alas this is the one place I would learn later in life that I wished I had known more about it, I would have loved to backpack the JMT. I can almost feel the morning coolness, the smell of the pines, and see the woodchucks & chipmonks scurrying along the rocks and trees. The smell of a small campfire in the evening and morning. If able, I could have spent my entire life backpacking such places as the JMT and the AT, and been completely happy living out of my backpack. May you have many more trips. Thanks for the video.
Hi WildernessBound. First of all, thank you for the kind words about the video. I'm happy it brings back good memories for you. We both know what a good dose of wilderness does for the spirits! I'm planning on having as many trips as fate allows, thank you! I took a two-week hike through the Wind River Range of Wyoming this past August and am in the process of making another film. It should be done by February. I think you may like it, if you liked this one. Blessings!
I will keep an eye out for it come Febuary, I flyfished parts of the Wind River Range, I remember the small lakes pouring one to another, and the marmots, but mostly the trout.
I am usually not a fan of RU-vid videos with slideshows. But yours were some of the most beautifully clear photos that I've ever seen. The music and the poetic narration only made it better. If I'm any judge, very, very well done.
Very nicely done Tim. I'll second Carlos comments about the way you deliver this presentation with still photos, videos and maps. The maps helped a great deal in orienting me to what you experienced. You also have a very soothing voice as you narrate the unfolding scenes. Thanks.
That was a beautiful video. Amazing pics and videos, very well edited and thoughtful narration. And you filled it with such valuable information for those planning a tip to the JMT. And the Google Earth screen shots were awesome. Thanks for your labor of love! Happy trails.
This was BEAUTIFUL. You did such a good job! My friend and I got our permit and even leaving from Happy Isles for this summer. So damn lucky! We have broken 70 so this WILL be an adventure, that's for sure. Your video just makes it all the better! Thanks so much!
Thank you so much Kanta. Congratulations on committing to such a memorable journey. I hope you and your friend have a great hike! Remember to stop and look back from time to time because the scenery is astounding everywhere! ALL THE BEST
I have watched and made many videos and I have to say that was one of the best I've seen. You REALLY put me right back there experiencing the trail. Thank you!
So happy to find out I'm related to John Muir on my maternal great great grandmothers side. Glad he made such a positive change to how people view nature. So important especially more so nowadays
A fantastic documentary that really does justice to the beautiful landscape.I enjoyed it so much. Many thanks for spending the time and effort. I particularly enjoy the calm atmosphere and that there is a personal touch but it’s clear the focus is on the trail and landscape!
+John Rummel Are you planning to do some night time lapses on your hike? I was a little disappointed with the night sky on my trip because of the smoke. Looks like new moon is in early July this summer.
Very nice video! Now i guess I have to do a northbound JMT! I would have loved to join you, Muir and Teddy around a campfire! Thank God for people like that who had the foresight to preserve places like this!
Thanks! Yes, John and Ted were very approachable! (I can tell who watches all the way to the end ;-) Practicing the Leave No Trace principles is the least we can do to honor their foresight, huh? Going NOBO gets the hard part done first, but I think having Whitney at the end would be a great way to end the journey (though Clouds Rest was pretty sweet). I watched your JMT video with you and your daughter and thoroughly enjoyed it. What a special memory that must be for both of you! All the best to you.
Great video Tim. I made the hike (N to S) in Aug., 2011. Your video makes me realize how much fun I had and how much I would like to do it again. Thanks for posting this.
Thanks for taking me along on your hike. Great video. Maybe someday I'll make it out on this hike. If nothing else, I know many more trip to Yosemite are in my future. I'll never get sick of visiting there.
I have hiked the trail 3 times SOBO. This july will be my first NOBO. I've watched a ton of videos over the years and this is far and away the best I've seen. Killer pic with Teddy and John btw.
+Sandyeggo Blue That's so kind, thank you! I think ending at Whitney would be a more fitting end-of-hike reward, but I think you will like NOBO as well. I had never been to Yosemite, so it was a bit of culture shock to end in such a non-wilderness setting. And, yes, Teddy and John were very cooperative in letting me in on their hero shot! (I don't think most people watch all the way to the end!) ALL THE BEST to you on your hike this summer! Have a great one!
I really enjoyed your video sir thanks for all the effort and hard work. hopefully one day I to can to take this epic journey. thank you again and good work my friend
We loved your film! We have hiked sections of the JMT and your photos and narrative were beautiful and took us back there. Thanks for sharing it with us! Loved the picture of you with Teddy and JM !
Great video, Tim....and congratulations on a terrific hike. I've spent considerable time in the Sierra and it's beauty never ceases to amaze. I look forward to completing the JMT in the near future. Thanks again for a great video....and best wishes!
Thanks for posting, amazing video. Pity about the smoke. It is always nice to see a quality video like this with great narration and footage that is not full of selfies !!
Really liked your video. Doing some serious consideration about getting a permit. My brother's friend recommended taking South to North - you've convinced me. Most of all, Clouds Rest is a dream destination, for me. Scares me crazy, but I really want to do it. Very well done video. Thank you!
Absolutely brilliant -- the best JMT video I've seen, ever! You've inspired me to go NOBO this year, something I have never considered before (I've done SOBO several times). You are a wonderful photographer and your editing and voice over narration do great justice to the otherworldly experience we know as the John Muir Trail. This is an exceptional video in every way. Thank you!
Thanks for the very kind words, Mark. Since you've done SOBO many times, you won't have to keep looking back over your shoulder like I did. I made a point to stop and look back periodically so I wouldn't miss a view, but somehow I missed the rock monster! Guess I'll have to schedule a SOBO someday! Enjoy your NOBO!!!
Amazing journey and film, thank you for sharing! That country is on my bucket list to get out and see but it will have to be when the kids get a little older and I'm not having to carry them after only 2 miles LOL
This was by far the best video I have watched so far on the JMT! Thank you so much...I don't give a thumbs up very often but your video was well deserving of it! Please make more videos, you're a natural.
So kind, thanks! I leave in two weeks for the Wind River mountain range of Wyoming. I'm planning to make another video of that hike as well. Stay posted!
I think this is one of the best videos I've seen of hiking the JMT. Having the topo map as a reference was a wonderful way to show the trail. All the pertinent info you shared was so helpful in understanding how to hike the trail. Congratulations on completing the trail, by the way. It's on my bucket list, if not all of it, at least a small part.
Bravo . Love the incorporation of Google Earth into the video and your balance of Commentary / Music / Photography & Video are the best I've seen . Nicely Done ! Makes me want to do the Northbound JMT even more now .
TOM....That was amazing. Loved the video the narrations and the music. Well Done sir. you must have been exhausted by the end. Wished I had that sort of strength and ability. i know i would truly enjoy it as much as you did. Again....BRAVO SIR...BRAVO.
Tim, my wife and I must have just missed you last summer. We bailed at Kearsarge Pass on our south bound trip on August 25th. My wife was really bothered by the smoke and we had climbed Whitney a few years before coming out of Horseshoe Meadow. I looks like you had great trip. We enjoyed it so much we are going back this year. Thanks for such a great video. See you on the trail.
+Michael Wellington Thanks for the kind words! I would have been at the Kearsage trail in the morning of the 25th, and if I remember correctly, it was pretty smokey that day, even in the morning. Yes, we may have passed each other that day. I do have some footage of a couple of hikers coming down the south side of Glen Pass around 9:30am. It's pretty shaky and from a distance, but could have been you! That was probably my toughest climb of the trail. Hope the air is clean for you this year. All the best!
What an amazing video Tim. So well balanced with video, pictures, music, map simulations and duration. Plus also very educational. I am planning the exact same route starting August this year and was concerned about the Cottonwood Pass piece to Crabtree Meadows, but after watching your video I feel much more comfortable.
+Wim Schalken The good thing for me is that the reality of the hike was even better than the expectations. This will stick to your spiritual ribs forever! Happy trails and congrats on giving this a go!
Tim, what a wonderful video! I really, really enjoyed it. I've probably watched two dozen or more videos from folks trekking the JMT, and this was one of the best and most enjoyable. I am hoping to do the JMT soon, and am considering a South to North hike as well. Your video will be enormously helpful for planning. Thanks and many blessings!
Tim, love your video! I'm sure it was a lot of work to put together, Thank you! It helped convince my buddy and I to go NOBO and start at Cottonwood Pass Trailhead. Applied this morning 3/12/21 for 9/12/21 - no problem! There have been several permits available into the late morning all week. I'm sure I'll watch several more times before I go and will send to friends & family that want to know why I'm off the grid this fall.
Thank you, Keith. You will be starting a day after I finished my hike. Nights will probably be cold, but traffic on the trail should be light. Also, bugs will most likely be non-existent. I can't remember when MTR and VVR close, but hopefully they will still be open when you resupply... Have an EPIC hike!!!
+Kathy Dixon-Wallace Thank you! I did meet one other person last year on the trail from Maine who was from Portland (I'm from the midcoast). There were a lot of people from California. I think a lot of people last year from California cancelled their hikes because of the smoke, but since I had put so much time and effort into it, I kept to my plans. Turned out the smoke wasn't THAT bad... Looks like this year is shaping up to be a good one. I know that pre-hike excitement! Have a great trip.
Beautiful voice. Fantastic photography. So refreshing to watch a video without being overwhelmed by talking head. This portion of the Sierra is what most of us like to see. Thank you.
