It only gets better with time but if you don't absolutely love the next arc this series may not be your cup of tea. Though I believe you'll love it

Lol, I'm guessing you're a fan, but like me, think people usually give One Piece some extra love like a kid in the class who gets to eat first. I love one piece, but it's pushed on readers like hey, read 3 volumes vs. 1 of every other series. That's like modern-day 6 eps vs. 2 for a series. Of course, one piece seems more fleshed out and interesting. Add to that one piece is nonmodern aka they didn't have as much competition back then, now everything needs to be fast-paced, hook me in half a chapter vs. a few volumes, etc. Again, STILL LOVE ONE PIECE. I just get salty when people love it and drop others that are good too, even if they don't have the same world-building or fun characters etc. Other series just don't get that chance anymore. If people say Then just do that, ok, make a series slow and build up today, in 1 chapter people drop it. It's whatever, though, since I like it. PS helps that One Piece is a light read vs. dark and edgy, which people run to after all the “generic shōnen” as people say. I think this is the reason new readers might enjoy being recommended Fairy Tail...fans hate it for not being subversive but most hate for series I heard steam from people wanting more generic stuff...more good guys win, cool powers, cool characters, relationships, etc…fairy tail came out too late. I also always assume that it is bad, readers hate action in manga (assumption for new readers since book action isn't as important for many as pure plot) ...so they will like spy x Family or something light and sweet…but never finish it in the long run hence sales but not consistent. @@hhjjj1670

Whenever I revisit these chapters they feel like they happened an eternity ago. It really does just keep getting better and better even after 25 years. A lot of people say the next arc is like a litmus test. Like after you finish the next arc you’ll probably be good. I think that happens later on. Part of One Piece is getting used to the One Piece-isms. Like the gags, the wackiness of the world, and the rules of the world. It takes a while to set up, but the payoff is immense.

I am not sure if it's a question of the medium (or "shonen" subgenre) that might not be your taste or the expectations of what the manga is about: One Piece is very character and themes driven so a lot of obvious as well as subtle weight is put on exploring how the characters develop (Usopp, the "regular human" becoming braver, Luffy learning how to be a captain and leader, Zoro overcoming his pride). Fans usually enjoy those "quiet", story/character-building moments more than the actual fights. And even though in hindsight those early arcs find themselves in the bottom third of tier lists (still good, but a far cry from later ones) some of the moments (Sanji backstory, Zoro vs. Mihawk, Usopp disbanding his first crew) are still fan-favorites to this day. But as someone else has said, the next arc is a small encapsulation of everything OP has to offer and people still rate it as one of the better arcs to this day. Doesn't mean you have to become "obsessed by it" at this point, but it might give you an idea if you want to be in this journey for the next 1000 chapters. :)

This is probably the only One Piece read through so far which has mentioned the part with Mihawk as the lowlight of the entire section. I kinda' get it though, the ending of syrup village likely influenced your take on that part. I just honestly think Mihawk vs Zoro and the scenes around that encounter is one of the strongest moments in all of East Blue outside of Arlong Park.

The start, and Syrup Village especially, is a bit slow, yeah. I still love parts of it, like for example when you find out the reason for why Usopp yells about pirates every morning, though. Baratie is honestly good, IMO, even though it's so short and simple. It works best that way. (The enemy captain's name is pronounced more like Kreeg, like the word for "war" in many Germanic languages.) Oh yeah, and Usopp's name is pronounced with a u-sound that I don't think exists in English, more akin to the double "o" (like in pool), except short. Not that it really matters, just in case you wanted to know. It's derived from the Japanese word for "lie", which is "uso". It's takes a LOT to bring someone down completely in a One Piece fight, usually. People will keep getting up long after you'd think they'd be dead. I love it, but I'm also used to it at this point, lol.

I think the One Piece obsession comes a bit later when you realize that so many things are connected and each arc isn't an island (heh) in the greater story. I'll give an example that isn't a spoiler since you've read the appropriate bits but it's easily overlooked (it's in the SBS after chapter 50 too). The Navyman that Kuro had hypnotized to believe he captured Kuro, is actually Axehand Morgan from Zoro's arc. (Kuro pirate flashback on page 233 in the omnibus) There are a few hints to pay attention to his character design, Oda does this sometimes. Kuro says "Such a nice face." then doubles down on the attention with "You speak well... through a broken jaw." This draws attention to his distinctive butt chin (same as Helmeppo's, Morgan's son, and explains the weird metal jaw of Axehand Morgan) No wonder Morgan has this inflated sense of importance, it's completely fictional.

One thing I thi knis interesting about the first East Blue Saga villains is that they help inform the notio,nof what a purate should be. Buggy is unambitious, content with his small fiefdom. Kuro never wanted to be a pirate, he didn't have the stomach for it. Krieg has the ambition and the stomach, but ultimately not the skill. As forbthe next arc...well, we'll get there.

I don't think the villian is evil to be evil. It's subtle but you notice later that he said he gave up the pirate life due to HOW dangerous it was. Oda didnt want to hint more as later people will say ugh so telegraphed so he loses no matter what. But the point is he's so strong yet in reality the world has pirates that can rock oceans and throw houses etc...He and other pirates in the series gave up and luffy keeps trying is the point you learn later. Its how in real life you settle but others say no and keep up their dream. your damned if you do or don't since making a deeper character early and fast would need lots of fast tropes, making a good one would need more time which you dont get for readers...hype matters. Less back then since sales of 10,000 were good back in the day now if you come out and don't make everyone think your story is the best ever made it's trash...

So some of the themes of the Baratie arc were Spirit & Dreams. This section of the story is meant to answer the question of: "What does it take to enter the grand line?" This is explicitly showed to us in Zoro vs Mihawk and Luffy vs Don Krieg. Krieg thought that invincible weapons would be enough to take him to the ends of the sea hence why he amassed such a large military force. But that military force is easily crushed by one man. There may be a lot of them but they're all less then noteworthy to Mihawk because they're all missing a crucial factor. The answer is simply spirit. Willpower & Drive are everything in this story. Something Zoro shows in spades against Mihawk. In his battle Mihawk first calls him weak but upon seeing Zoro's spirit and refusal to quit even in the face of death he calls Zoro strong. Because more than any piece of equipment spirit is absolutely necessary to make it on the grand line. It's like a metaphor for anyone wanting to accomplish some big goal in life. When Zoro experiences the most crushing defeat, his entire self-image, and believe in his strength are completely shattered but in the face of that defeat Zoro's spirit remains strong. Because thats whats going to carry you forward through all the setbacks and losses. Luffy vs Krieg emphasizes this even further. Their battle was one of Mettle vs Metal. Kreig thought the best equipment in the world would save him but it was all shattered by the strength of Luffy's spirit alone. I know you've probably already grasped this but this is important to keep in mind because these themes are important for the story going forward.

Though just go into with zero expectations. I think the next arc is very cool personally. I never really liked the buggy arc and ussop arc originally and thought baratie was really good

@emperorluffy6001
@emperorluffy6001 Год назад
So lets go in-depth with Kuro a bit just so you understand him better and what his role is. The villains in each of the strawhats introduction arcs serve as a representation of the wrong kind of piracy and they help highlight the traits of the new members to show why they're worthy of joining Luffy's crew. The theme of the arc was all about cowardliness and what truly makes someone a coward. Usopp while deathly afraid for his own life shows true bravery by standing up and defending his home island despite being wildly outmatched and out of his league. Here usopp shows he has what it takes to be a real pirate because as we learn from Luffy in the previous arc being the pirate is all about being prepared to risk your own life. But Kuro he was the exact opposite. He was a famous and deadly pirate yet he schemed and lied and did everything he could to run away from his Pirate lifestyle. He couldn't handle his life being at risk and chose to hide away on some forgotten island. It's Kuro who is the true coward of this arc and he contrasts Usopp brilliantly throughout. Like how usopp is Known as a liar while Kuro is the trust worthy butler of Kaya. Yet despite this the one thing Usopp would never lie about is being the son of a Pirate while at the same time Kuro the one thing he was lying to everyone about the entire time was his history as a Pirate. Kuro's fighting style also further reflects his secretive underhanded nature. Kuro was a guy who silently planned things in the background so his fighting style was the "Silent Step" technique. The early One piece villains aren't too complex on the surface but they are very well crafted antagonists meant to flesh out the themes and highlight the strengths of the strawhats for the early parts of the series. They're only starter villains though. They're basically warm-ups before we get to any more compelling antagonists. So if you want more interesting villains you'll have to keep reading.

It's one of those things that...if you speak to long time readers, it will be enough to say "oh, and what about Going Merry" to illicit an emotional response from them. And I mean that in the best of ways.

It'll be a while before you're acclimated to shounen fights. The stuff you talked about are par for the course. Fights are far more dramatized in anime/manga than in any other medium. To the point that fights are actual stories in themselves. So fights last a while in anime. If you think this is unbelievable then it's important to know that humans in One Piece aren't exactly ordinary. They're all superhuman to some degree. And their feats in battle will increasingly continue to defy your imagination.
