Six months that is very quick in the Netherlands, here in Belgium. They must have a job first. And then maybe after a year or 1,5 year or longer then the family may come over legally.

@@eviken1982 This was posted 2016, and he hadn't seen his kids for 1.5 years. So that means he probably left around October of 2014, maybe spent a year being smuggled and then going through clearance in the Netherlands, and then got a job. I'm figuring if he applied in October or so of 2015, that's why - the refugee crisis wasn't as extreme. But I doubt it is anywhere near that fast now.
