This documentary explores the complex and often misunderstood reality of coma, a state that goes far beyond the simplistic notion of “deep sleep”. Through poignant testimonies from doctors, researchers, families and patients, the film attempts to demystify the mysteries of the brain and consciousness, located on the delicate border between life and death.
The narrative follows several personal and touching stories. David, victim of head trauma, falls into a coma and arrives at the hospital in critical condition. His slow recovery of consciousness, marked by key stages such as the opening of his eyes, the first words and the first steps, is followed with particular attention, illustrating the moments of doubt, worry and happiness experienced by himself , his family and the nursing staff.
At the same time, the documentary presents the case of Jill, a young woman whose awakening process seems to be stagnating. Receiving specific care at the Rehazenter in Luxembourg, she underwent a week of intensive examinations with renowned neurologist Steven Laureys at Liège University Hospital. These examinations, presented for the first time in the world, offer an accurate assessment of the level of consciousness of a patient in a coma.
Finally, the film looks at the experiences of Arnaud and Nicola, who, after being in a serious coma for weeks, wake up with significant after-effects. Their long and difficult rehabilitation journeys in Garches, where they struggle to regain their autonomy and reintegrate into life, are meticulously documented.
