Right ? I had to rewind to make sure what I heard was actually what he said (English is not my native tongue either). People complained... because he is telling the truth ? Happy van life, happy sailing, happing farming ? Happy 9am-5pm Monday to Friday are missing on my videos options... maybe some of them are the ones complaining their ideal dream life is being ruined 😂

I never think you were complaining either. Goodness when you said it’s 9 o’clock at night and you were going to still go out and plant your garden. I got exhausted for you. I can’t wait for your flowers to come up.

I couldn't agree more. Some people don't seem to realize that making videos is a long and laborious job; Mathias and Tova have a double job in fact, and they generously offer it to us. Some people seem to think they're entitled to everything, and I find this behavior very disturbing. I'm sorry to hear that too.

Judge others? Maybe it has something to do with recording themselves and publicly posting it on RU-vid for the world to see, lol. I hate to tell you, but when you do this, you invite the world to judge you. I don't judge people who live in private.

What I observe in your family is integrity, this is what keeps me engaged, inspired and supportive of you. This path isn't always easy, however as you know, the feelings one has when they know they've maintained their integrity and the values that are true to their vision is immeasurable. I see a fine balance between fatigue and joy from you and I appreciate both. Blessings to your family.

Complain all you want,, it is actually comforting to know that we are not the only one, here in Alaska, that needs to fit a year's worth of project in 5 months (gardening, animal husbandry, building projects, etc.), which are May through September. We have a lot of similarities: vegetation (star flower), mosquitoes, long daylight = long workday. Feels good to know we are not alone living this lifestyle, so thanks for sharing.❤

Hi! We are planting potatoes for 5 years in our homestead, tried no till - under the mulch of hay, tried to plant straight to the ground as you planted, but using a horse instead of tractor. Now we grow it, combining this two metods - we till the soil only in autumn after the potatoes, and in spring we just dig a 20-cm row, plant potatoes, a little cover it by soil, and then add a compost or some goose manure straight to the row, then cover all the row by soil. After the potatoes grow up to 30 cm from the ground, we separate the plant in center by covering the center with hay or straw. So, each plant separates on two, and it helps to produce more potatoes from one plant. Adding goose manure or compost straight to the row makes potatoes much bigger. I can find a links to RU-vid videos of this potatoes growing method)) Greetings from Belarus and good luck with your potatoes!

When you complain you give us a true feeling of what it is like to live like you do. Your life is filled with very, very hard work. You have very few modern conveniences. You have very little money. If you were laughing and smiling instead of complaining, people would think you were crazy or taking drugs. I like to hear you complain. It allows us to better understand the hardships you are experiencing.

I am sure it's not easy running your homestead. I could never do it. I don't have what it takes, but that's ok. What makes us all so special and beautiful is that we are all different. You are such a beautiful hardworking family. I remember when my father used to plant potatoes in our small garden here in malta, he used to cut each potato in approximately 3 pieces then plant them just as you did 12" apart. He ploughs the next row which automatically the soil will fall over to the planted row. I apologise if my explanation is not clear enough 😊

Hello dear courageous friends in northern Sweden! I felt such compassion for your hard day and lives and your courage and steadfast desire to make your life succeed off the grid. (it brought me to tears) Your everyday struggles to make your home and lives sustainable is so inspirational. Tova's beautiful smile, positive support and hard work is so true and beautiful. Your amazing intellect and ongoing knowledge for sustainable farming is so inspiring. (please excuse...I forgot your name!....Tova's husband) Ivor is growing into such a beautiful child of nature. Don't EVER, EVER feel the need to explain your work ethic or why you have done things the way you felt best. Few people could survive for very long in the location you have chosen. Keep on keeping on and hopefully your plans for the house will become a reality. Are there neighbors or family to help with all the chores and the continued building of your house? I will look forward to future videos....May you find renewed strength and success. Every day is a new beginning. (a friend in the U.S.)

The important thing is...the sheep ARE making a difference..small, but things are improving, thx to you. ☺️ I love how you pronounce DANDELIONS, sounds so much more eloquent. I love the idea of the chickens being in the fields, not only to improve the vitality of the ground, but i think they are happier in the sunshine. Potatoes aren't really difficult, they need minimal care, and just water. In the prairies they survive in dusty dry soil with a short growing time. They will be great 👍 Ive never once thought of you guys as complainers. Farm life isn't easy and you must be so tired sometimes. I am sure the benefits are something you enjoy every day. I don’t think you are complaining at all. I think you are providing us with a realistic view of the challenges of living your lifestyle. Here, people will lease their land to people with cows for a specific amount of time. The cows eat, trample, and poop in a controlled time frame. The farmers pay for this opportunity, and you would get the advantage you are looking for. Things are different in this part of the world I guess. Thank you for taking the time to show us your beautiful homestead and all it takes to make it function.❤️

Garden suggestion (lifetime lazy gardener with too large of a garden LOL): in the fall, cover your garden beds with at least 6” of mulch (bark, grass, forest stuff, etc. - I also layer cardboard underneath. More is even better. Smother those weeds! After the snow melts, throw more mulch on and when you are ready to plant, just pull aside until you get to plantable earth. Find books by an American gardener Ruth Stout. ❤❤❤ Good luck.

I live in a very small town in a 103 year old house . I watched my grass grow up to a foot high and was kind of sad when I finally cut it . Leaf Mulch has been productive for me to hill potatoes with, no till. I began with an initial till several years ago. Mushrooms are fruiting where I mix petroleum free sawmill dust, pine straw and leaf mulch. The underground network is healthy now. I built up the top layers with compost added to the mulch. Most of my bed amendments are done in the Fall with a winter rye or similar planting, early Fall. It’s working for me in zone 5, Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, USA. I’m pursuing permaculture due to necessity and because it’s sorely needed across the Globe. Reducing work load and labor intensive tasks, and selecting the plants that thrive in a winter wonderland with little nursing. Set it and forget it planting essentially. Increasing perennials too. Farming needs to get easier as I age with challenges. Keep up the juggling and multitasking, SISU!

I have been following you for a very long time and I love that your don’t over romanticize living a sustainable and slow life on your land. Many people make it look like all fun and games to live off the land and the bottom line- this lifestyle is hard, challenging and every evolving. I think you all do a great job of showing just that. Not many people want to work as hard as you all do as a culture in cities we have gotten way too soft. Working a job or two jobs is 8-16 hours a day. Working the land is 18-20 hours a day. I applaud you and your family for being so humble and showing us the reality of what your life is like. I really respect you so much.

It does not seem like complaining to me! It is what it is, I think you said, Mattias . It is hard work but I am sure rewarding to raise your flocks, plant your vegetables and flowers and live so close to the way in which generations before you lived! Tova, I liked that you can use some of the wool for controlling the weeds in the flower boxes. While the amount of wool from the shearing is probably not very very great, still, it would be wonderful to find other uses for it in your homesteading ! Thank you for sharing your lives with us all.

I did not managed to get my potatoes under ground yet due to the many weeds in my field. That was the reason for growing potatoes in the first place: if I have to dig out all that bramble roots anyway I could also put potatoes in with all that turning and piling up. In other years I planted between the potatoes rows of beans and flowers. The only alternativ way I know for small scale potatoe growing are boxes or the no dig method. But you need extra soil for it. Having enough compost and mulch materials is the missing key. Do you have access to woodchips? Don't feel too bad about the bare ground, it is only a small field and will recover fast. You are not complaining you are showing all sides. The long days need to be used and Winter is not that far away. So exhaustion is part of homesteading . Not romanticizing is very honest. Thank you for doing what you are doing!

You are in my thoughts every day! May the spring and warmth of the season bring you renewed strength and vitality ....May you be able to take the time to enjoy the new lambs and start further work on your house. Don't work to the point of exhaustion....take the necessary time to rest. Your videos and life are so inspirational.....(a friend in the U.S.)

I have planted a "lazy bed" for potatoes. Place potatoes on top of the soil and cover with thick layer of leaves. Water the bed. They grow well.

Dandy Lion is very good to grow. The bees love the blooms, you can make a salad from the leaves and make Dandy Lion wine as well.

I've never seen any of you to be anything but happy! Watching this video takes me back to when you very first decided to start moving the sheep from paddock to paddock to start the regeneration of the land. It seemed complex and you didn't even know if it would work. Wow....look at it now! Maybe you could pull up the pictures from when you were first partitioning the land and do a side by side comparison. I remember how different it looked and I can see how much this means to you! It may take longer than a lot of people have patience for, but just like the land, no matter how long it takes your house will awe-inspiring! I love seeing the two of you work to together.....and then to see the looks on your faces when you discover your hard work has paid off......that's the best part! Too many people live in a "instant gratification" world. I think those are the ones who take issue with your videos and can't appreciate the way you live. 👍👏🙏💞

We always planted potatoes on ground to clean it up and create structure. Pigs went on afterwards to till the ground. Watch out for build ups of eel worm. Horse nut beans would be a good follow on crop to lock in the nitrogen.
