The JPC is Not For You | Comparing the JPC 1 and 2 to the FCPCv5

After far too long, I return to be incredibly tsundere about the Crye JPC for nearly an hour. I discuss why the JPC is good, and why that's entirely irrelevant to most people. For being so commonly recommended, the JPC is really a terrible choice for the vast majority of people, and I compare it to the Ferro FCPC to demonstrate a few reasons why. I also go over a bit of the history, and why the JPC is actually very important in the development of the modern tactical market because well, that's the kind of thing I went to school for.
Oh hunh, looks like I can add an end card now. Too bad I didn't mention it at all. Audio is still terrible and video still mediocre. Maybe I'll get better after I move.
Please buy some patches so I can keep doing this kind of thing.

Do I want a JPC? No. Did I search for the term JPC? No. Did I see a man in graduation garb and tactical gear in the frame? Yes. It worked, even if you didn't intend for it to. Good vid, keep em coming.

This hits a common point I try to make re: gear, and that's that there is a world of difference between what makes sense for a huge organization like the US military to issue and what makes sense for an individual who isn't inherently backed up by the largest logistics engine the world has ever known. Different requirements for different situations.

Even at smaller scales, individual requirements are often unique, so there only being a single default suggestion that's so bad across the general population spectrum is crippling the community.

The argument of "it's a 'jumpable' plate carrier so don't buy it unless you're jumping out of airplanes" is kind of a moot point. People often say this to try and sound smart when it really doesn't actually fucking matter. I carry my 19x on me every day, but I've never shot anyone so I guess I should just not carry my gun then? I wear an ankle ifak and while I've only had to use it once for a woman.... coming up on 5 years ago... I guess that means I shouldn't carry that either. Your issues with ride height could easily be fixed if you spent literally like 5 minutes adjusting the shoulder straps for a proper fitment. While I just use an AVS nowadays, I still have a jpc as a backup and have gone through ... 2 of them in the past, one of which I gave to a buddy. The hypalon for the shoulder straps are definitely a weak point and the only issue I've had with them in the past. I would ruck and swim with my jpc daily, and I did eventually get a small tear which then completely failed shortly after, however, people do make covers specifically for that. I can't remember any in particular, it was just always some random dude I saw in crye facebook groups that made them. But from what I know of people who've had those covers, they work like you'd imagine. That said, if you want a jpc go fucking get it. It's legitimately a great plate carrier, just don't load it down with a SHIT ton of weight (When I mean a shit ton, I mean I ran it with a standard load of 4 rifle, 2 pistol, a gp pouch which had nods, another gp that I carried a compass and little admin shit, I had the crye zip on molle back panel that I would store my bladder in... and it's fine. I think my jpc would come in with plates around 10-15lbs depending on water, w/ plates obv. It's been a few years so I can't really recall exactly how much it used to weigh. But that is TOTALLY fine and really, you don't need much more than that if you really want a plate carrier you can fucking load up on, that is the only time I would reccomend you go with something else. And just like my AVS, I had to spend the time to actually get the ride height correct. Then I spent more time adjusting pouches because of the harness. The point is, you need to actually put in the time to make sure it fits you and then you want to spend time to actually using your kit. Because something that might look good, might actually be completely unusable or just really ineffecient. Spend the time actually setting your shit up correctly instead of just throwing it together and saying "good enough" then whine when it's not done properly. Also, anyone giving you shit about wearing a jpc because you're not jumping out of a plane is a fucking idiot and you have literally no reason to listen to them and should basically ignore pretty much everything they say because chances are they also probably think 22 bounces around inside the head and "i support the 2nd amendment but.....". At the end of the day it's a fucking plate carrier and it's JOB is to hold plates and allow you to put shit on it that you need. Does the JPC do that? Yes, it fucking does.

A ton of the problems you have with the carrier are because you’re too small for the medium carrier. Why do you think it hangs low? I got mine to hang correct. Also a plate carrier hanging lower has no purpose. It’s not easier to jump in. It’s called a jumpable plate carrier because of its low profile. You’re just simply too small for the medium. That’s it. You complain it’s bad because it fits too big and loose. That’s because…. It’s too big for you 😂
@nicothenodgoblin9117
@nicothenodgoblin9117 Год назад
Yes, and unlike other carriers on the market, it has a more specific size that it's built around fitting, and since Medium is similar to the common (and cheap) 10x12 plates, it's something to consider versus it being an automatic choice. I like the small JPC, which did fit well, but if you don't have CIF to trade plate sizes out at, checking those sizes can get expensive and slow.
@joeyduese6638

@@nicothenodgoblin9117 it can fit the same plates any other medium plate carrier can. Even a small 2.0 can fit a 10x12 with some time. The carrier is fine. I'm glad I found this video before cryeing once. For the past few weeks I had been searching for a new plate carrier to replace my poor choices when I bought most of my civilian gear from what was available and with my low budget circa 2010 (condor garbage). It came down to the JPC 2.0 and the FCPC v5 and I chose the fcpc. I'll be reading your articles for sure now. Glad I found your channel as your opinions make a fuck ton of sense with data to back it up.

So, just looking at you wearing the medium JPC 2.0 I can tell right away you do not have your shoulder straps adjusted properly. I am pretty small build but have a 2.0 in medium and it fits perfectly. I did have to adjust the shoulder straps substantially, but it has plenty of clearance for me to draw from my belt
@nicothenodgoblin9117
@nicothenodgoblin9117 Год назад
I could probably tighten it down some more, but I try to keep the adjustment within the limits of the included parts- no cutting and melting ends, and, for this one, no folding the triangles under the included shoulder wraps. You can do it, obviously, but I'm trying to look at the design instead of the mods and ways people make it work. Especially remembering back when everything was "one-size-fits-all" meaning extra-large, I'm cranky about it, hah.

You are attaching the AVS front flap incorrectly. The straps need to be tucked inside the plate bag. There is a velcro hook field on the inside. this way the cummerband has no chance to pull the starps off, when doffing.

Fantastic video as always Nico. I was considering a JPC as a backup plate carrier because everyone recommended (told) me so. This video definitely was definitely an eye opener. I'm around the same build and height as you so the JPC 2.0 is most definitely going to hang low for me. The straps will likely be off my shoulders as well since I have lost weight and I'm on the skinny side. Most tact kit companies cater plate carriers, chest rigs and uniforms based off individuals who are 6'1, stocky and superman build. I had the same problem with the Platatac Peacekeeper mk4 chest rig. The straps was position and angled wider than the front (flaring out). As a result it looks like I'm wearing a double size too big bra/corset with the adjustment tightened to its fullest. Maybe I will try my luck with Spiritus systems. I have heard the lv119 fits perfect with skinny and average dudes.
@nicothenodgoblin9117
@nicothenodgoblin9117 Год назад
So while the LV119 doesn't have the stanced shoulder straps issue that the JPC does, I've always found that it fits like an IOTV, without the soft armor that forces the IOTV to fit that way. I'll get to it eventually, possibly maybe- look at my production rate lol- but it's definitely another one with some issues. That said, it's an incredibly well thought out carrier with great quality and fantastic internal features like cable routing etc, but if you're not using them, that's sort of irrelevant.

In hindsight I probably shouldn't have gotten a JPC 1.0 but after (somewhat significant) diy mods I dont think I would get anything else. I replaced the right cumberbund's front connector with tubes and shortened the molle length of both cumberbunds. I also cut the shoulder sleave for the reason you mentioned. Also waterproofed the admin pouch at the top and replaced that velcro with a waterproof zipper. The only reason its my favorite is solely because of those extremely personalized mods. The JPC is kind of like a Glock in that it is the best...as long as you mod the shit out of it.
