I think an important addendum to something Zack said at about 12:20-12:30, Rip probably doesn't know anything about modern Weightlifting and I would add that Louie doesn't seem to know anything about the modern state of Powerlifting either. Stefi Cohen filmed stuff for her RU-vid channel at Westside a few months ago and he had no idea who the fuck she was. Westside vs. the World kinda painted him as this out of touch luddite and that's something he seemed to almost take pride in.

Yeah, i get that impression as well, although in deense of Louie, Stephi said he'd "forgotten" who she was, so maybe it's an issue of Alzheimer's.

I've deadlifted 705lbs, front squatted 550lbs, strict OHP'd 335lbs, and I can't clean 315lbs, much less 405. Self admittedly suck hard at cleans.

It is amazing that stating the obvious is necessary in this day and age - the difference between a deadlift pull and a clean or snatch pull is dramatic, almost unrelated. Acceleration from the knee bares no relation to grinding from the floor to the mid-thigh. I deadlifted 600, but am truly starting from scratch to cue weightlifting pulls in a path that allows for acceleration. Sad its necessary to even have this discussion, but certainly well done on your end gentlemen. As an aside, low bar squats are a path to nowhere. Watching Chad squat huge weights with real quad engagement is inspirational
@davidshmavid5
@davidshmavid5 4 года назад
I squatted low bar for a while and recently switched to high bar while also adding some other quad work like hack squats. Just curious as to why you say low bar is a path to nowhere. My impression is that low bar wasn't developing my quads at all while putting unnecessary stress on my low back; when I switched to high bar, the proverbial light switch was turned on in my quads. Deadlifts take care of hams, glutes and back strength, so I don't really see a need for low bar squats anymore. Plus, I don't see a lot of transference to other lifts for low bar, in contrast to high bar. But wanted to get your opinion. Thanks!
@michaelsenft3608
@michaelsenft3608 4 года назад
Hi David - you nailed it with your analysis, at least from my experience. The day after college I switched to low bar, my single went up but my explosion died, my quads shrank as my hamstrings grew (they were already naturally large and compensated for no glute activation), and my rom disappeared. High bar back squat, front squat, and especially split squat (want to talk about laying bare my pathetic pelvic floor engagement!) are the only way to go. And I love OHS but suck at them! Everything you do poorly should be a priority in my opinion - Nietzsche had it right

It seems like a good analogy would be that running a faster 5K won't help you run a faster 100m. They are similar movement patterns with different levels of power output and rate of force production.

Here's another thing I noticed. Rip's narrative, which he has been pushing for at least the last 10 years, is that US coaches don't care about developing strength in their lifters. I asked for the name of one coach who Rip thought was not doing a good job of getting his or her lifters stronger. Crickets.The one response I received from a person posting under the Starting Strength name was that developing strength was different from getting stronger. Not sure that there's a difference, but at any rate the response did not answer my question. This mythical US coach who doesn't care about strong weightlifters is simply a strawman that Rip has created to fire up his supporters and, presumably, to market the Starting Strength brand. He portrays himself as the curmudgeonly "Uncle Rippy" who has the one simple solution to make the US dominate in weightlifting, but all of the US coaches are too stupid to listen.

One of the great things about debates regarding the best ways to train is that there is a very objective way to solve them, they happen every weekend around the World, they're called meets. I look forward to when Rip or his ilk come to the proving ground.

Rip never said that deadlifting 700 makes cleaning 350 or 450 “lighter”. He said it makes you stronger and therefore better able to generate more force against the bar. This “more force” results in higher acceleration, results in higher momentum at the end of the pull, results in the bar moving higher. All of this is required to be able to clean the afore mentioned weights. And he never said that just getting your deadlift up would result in a 1:1 improvement in your clean. He DID say that you have to practice with weights close to your third attempt C&J in order to develop the technique required.
@davidshmavid5
@davidshmavid5 4 года назад
I see your point. But I think their point is that the amount of training and recovery time it takes to get to a 700 lb DL is going to take away time from training and recovering from C&J. And the strength benefits taper off quite dramatically as time progresses. It's counter-intuitive, but it seems like the best practice is to simply train C&J w/o worrying about strength benefits of DL (edit: the type of muscle recruitment needed for C&J is vastly different from DL, so training C&J itself will make your acceleration better, whereas DL might hinder acceleration gains due to it naturally being a slower lift that doesn't depend on acceleration; you're training different muscles and fiber types). From what they communicated, none of the elite weight lifters come close to DL 700 or front squatting 600 because they just don't contribute to gains in their specific lifts.
@andrewmontgomery1763
@andrewmontgomery1763 4 года назад
But also they add in this podcast, that these recommendations aren't based of significant experience in weightlifting, whether performing himself or others. If you want to snatch and clean and jerk more, the classic, tried and true method is to snatch, clean and jerk, and high bar back squat. Yes getting stronger will help to a point, but most of your time (and intensity, AND recovery) must be spent towards practicing the snatch and clean and jerk.
