We continue our series on the Forgotten Wars of Roman history. In this episode we launch ourselves into the Jugurthine War which would prove to be Rome's most corrupt war.
The video begins with a quick recap on Numidian history and its entanglement with Rome. This would occur over the course of the Punic Wars with Carthage where Numidian Cavalry clashed repeatedly with the legions. Famously the Numidians would seal the doom of the Roman legions at the Battle of Cannae but would ultimately turn on Carthage at the Battle of Zama. In the aftermath of the Second Punic War, King Massinissa would lead a united Kingdom of Numidia as a staunch ally of Rome. His son would carry on this tradition. However when the question of who was to suceed him was posed, the answer would precipitate an unravelling of the entire status quo. Here Jugurtha would rise to claim the throne and challenge Rome itself.

First, thank you for covering this conflict, for years I've been waiting for either You, or Kings and Generals to cover the Jugerthine War, it's phenomenally corrupt. Second, I know it may not seem like a Forgotten War, but will you cover Sulla's Roman Civil War? Often when I talk Roman civil war with others. They always default to the Caesar v. Pompey war. But I think Sulla's deserves some recognition.

That situation was never fixed till the Eastern Roman Empire's time under Justinian and after, due to diplomacy in exchange deals between them... and monks stealing silk worms from China in making their own industry of it all back home in the empire. Pompey the great's backstory in history from beginning to end = with his campaigns against the Crete pirates + his involvement in Spartacus's late rebellion, the last remains of the Seleucids in the east and the Jewish state of the time. As well as Sulla, Crassus and more on Marius too. Maybe try this for future vids please Invicta? 👌😎😉 Thanks again for all your hard work over these many years ongoing! 👍✔ Keep up the great work.

170 years previously, when the famous Greek commander Pyrrhus, had attempted to even just gift a chest of gold to the Roman senator Fabricius, it ended in a firm rejection. Or when Pyrrhus's physician informed the Romans that he would poison Pyrrhus for them. Not only were the Romans disgusted by the proposition, but they sent a letter to Pyrrhus informing him of the plot in paraphrased language; "Pyrrhus you are a fool, you make war upon honorable men, and trust yourself to villians. Nor do we inform you of this plot on your life for any regard of you, but in order that your ruin will not bring infamy on ourselves nor would men be able to say that we won the war by treachery, because we could not do so through valor" How far the Roman character had fallen by Jugurtha's time, its no wonder the republic collapsed not long after.

The wars against Carthage killed off a lot of the old nobility, and the ambitious commanders who fought in Greece and Spain saw conquest as a means to not only level up their own prestige, but to give their family names more value. Rinse and repeat for decades and decades until all thats left is Augustus and an elevated Equite class.

I mean, there is VERY strong evidence that Senators were accepting bribes from the Mamertines and their allies on Sicily to get them involved in the First Punic War. Corruption was always rampant in Rome. The first tax collectors in Sicily stole all kinds of wealth from the island, and this continued as they took Greece and Anatolia as well, more than a century of taking Greek statues and mosaics and all sorts of things. A few people were convicted of that corruption, but only a few.

Jugurtha's decision to massacre the Roman settlers always baffled me, like did he seriously expect the republic to do nothing after thousands of their own citizens got slaughtered by a foreign king, Rome had gone to war for far smaller matters, and while they gave in to bribery previously, that was because it really didn't bother them that much who sat on the Numidian throne, but Jugurtha now just made it personal, and a military response is garanteed. Jugurtha doesn't seem like the type to give in to emotions easily, and unlike Mithridates, he wasn't trying to prove a point and incite rebellion in Roman Africa, so why did he do it?
@meilinchan7314
@meilinchan7314 9 месяцев назад
Either he got cocksure that his Roman friends would protect him. Or more likely, like so many cases, Jugurtha lost control - there is only so much that a good commander can do. Moreover, as mentioned, Jugurtha's murder of Hiempsal compromised the respect he commanded from the Numidians, and would no doubt have interefered with his ability to keep his own men in line. We will never know what the true story was; all we know was that his actions finally incensed the Romans into attacking and defeating him. As well as ensure that Roman rule would be easier for the Numdians to digest.

I just wanted to point out something that bothers me when people depict Numidians in historical documentaries. The Numidians were not all black or very dark skinned. @@MRBell-kg4kr That's a very naïve statement, Its obvious from your comment you are Afrocentric. Arabs are not white or have lighter skin than Berbers to begin with, and this is not how genetics works lol. In North Africa, the Arab presence isn't as significant as most people think; they ruled for only about 35 years after nearly 70 years of war, then the Berbers revolted and independent Berber kingdoms emerged. Berbers are many times more numerous than they even during Banu Hilal and Banu Salim's migration which is considered the biggest migration wave to North Africa, as can be seen in Ibn Khaldun/Yaqut al-Hamawi/Abu Alabbas Anasiri's accounts, and more other historians. Actually, this debate does not require many arguments, the kings mentioned in the video had coins with their faces and it is evident they were no different from other Mediterranean people. You can also see how Egyptians portrayed Libyan tribes and what color they used for their skin, and how Herodotus described them. The portrayal of Berbers as black is really infuriating, as is what is happening with Cleopatra and Egyptian history, and that has nothing to do with racism.

Marcus Aurelius? = both the Parthians & Germanic tribes had invaded the empire, so him and his brother & generals had to counterattack against them in their own territories for defence. When Attila invaded the West in the 450s AD = the Western Roman empire combined forces with other allied barbarian kingdoms to fight in defence against a common greater enemy for their very survival. BTW; That's every nation & people in human history for you, going from freedom fighters overthrowing kings & tyrant governments for democracy, to eventfully becoming empires themselves down the line, all but name... just ask Carthage. The Roman Republic was an empire all but name, just fat merchant elite senatorial militant nobility without a crown = dressed in togas... rule of few. Like Eldia & Marley from Attack on Titan = it's always about money + resources, control + power, ego & dominance in absolutes when it comes to greed & ambitions... sad but painful truth to reality... it just switches places & factions afterwards = from one dictatorship to another. Halo 3 Arbiter: You traded one villain, for another. 509 BC + 480 BC + 431 BC + 334 BC + 264 BC + 218 BC + 149 BC + many others in Rome's wars... and others in 1066 + 1096 + 1204 + 1754 + 1776 + 1812 + 1826 + 1836 + 1861 + 1914 + 1939 AD + cold war + Gulf war + 2001 + 2022 & more countless in endless cycles to come. When does it end? Achilles: It never ends. Fallout # War, war never changes... meaning, basic motivations. The weapons change, but the objectives remains the same. There are more offensive wars than defensive ones in all of human history... because it's cheaper going out and gaining than defending expensively.

Jugurtha's actions in executing his rivals, including the Romans at Cirta is what doomed him. Had he not done that, the Roman Republic would have let all this slide and Jugurtha's dominion over Numidia would have been set with no trouble from Rome. Up to that point of these actions at Cirta, Jugurtha had played all his cards perfectly. All this stuff however showed how corrupt the Roman Republic had become as time had progressed past the Second Punic War. Rome had become big, powerful, wealthy (for the few). And corrupt. Only about 20 years before the Jugurthine War, the Romans had already descended into assassinating their own senators. The killings of the Gracchi brothers kick started this downward spiral. As Invicta covers the Jugurthine War, we will start seeing familiar names that will set the stage for open Roman civil war. Wikipedia has a neat little "Crisis of the Roman Republic" if you want to jump ahead.
